25.01.2022 Still looking for that perfect Christmas gift? Early Bird Registrations for the 2021 BIG Canberra Bike Ride have just opened. There are four different routes to choose from. See https://bigcanberrabikeride.org/
25.01.2022 It is now two months since a bike rider was crashed into by a car towing a trailer at the corner of Coulter Drive and William Hovell Drive in Belconnen. The crash was recorded clearly on another driver's Dash-Cam. The vision of the accident horrified many bike riders. At this stage, the Police have not laid any charges. When there is clear evidence available, many people question why the Police can't take instant action against the driver. However, there is more to accident Read more - https://bit.ly/3847pqW
24.01.2022 Meet Charmaine! Bicycle badass, solo traveler and the adventurer who was hit by a car that ran a red light and is still cycling. Be inspired and reminded why you love cycling. https://www.oliviaround.org//14/hit-by-a-car-still-bicycli
24.01.2022 Cycling hazards continued. Magpies are out and snakes are back in! Riders please be alert to the growing number of snakes using the shared paths as fast transport corridors and sun-baking spots. ACT Parks and Conservation advise if you come across a snake, you should try to give it a wide berth. They are usually on the hunt for food and will quickly move away from the path.... Also, try to alert other riders and walkers entering the area that you have seen a snake nearby.
22.01.2022 Thanks for meeting with us Elizabeth Lee MLA - Liberal Member for Kurrajong and Mark Parton MLA. We're not too concerned about Lycra but we were glad to talk to you about how many Canberrans are willing to use their bikes for transport, but are put off by unsafe infrastructure.
21.01.2022 Great to see you out and about on your bike Yvette Berry
20.01.2022 Help is needed to make the dream of the Monaro Rail Trail a reality.
18.01.2022 Driver education is an important tool for keeping bike riders safe. This is a good video from NSW Roads we can share around while we wait for the ACT Govt to roll out a program of education and enforcement of minimum passing distance laws.
16.01.2022 The wonderful Bridge to Bridge loop on Lake Burley Griffin has been restored! The brand new widened shared path behind the NGA is opened and there is no longer a need for the detour around Regatta Point. Pedal Power is very grateful to the National Capital Authority for making the necessary changes to reduce collisions at the notorious pinch point behind the National Gallery. This well loved and heavily utilised loop path will now be safer for all users.
16.01.2022 Come and ride the BIG Canberra Bike Ride in style. Order your new cycling jersey today. Visit https://eventplus.net/shop?eporg=BCB21
16.01.2022 Reducing Canberra's transport emissions is going to take innovation and dedication. The local government in Bologna has implemented a program they call "Bella Mossa" which rewards people who cycle, walk or use public transport to move around the city. Points can be redeemed for discounts or payment towards merchandise and services at supermarkets, sports retailers, bike stores, bookshops, cinemas, restaurants and bars. ... In 2018, 10,000 people reported taking 995,000 trips using Active Travel, totalling 3.7 million kilometres and saving 711 tonnes of CO2. How do you think Chris Steel MLA could encourage more Canberrans to ride instead of using their car?
15.01.2022 This Saturday everyone is invited to ride three new MTB trails at Cotter Pines. These great trails have been built through a unique collaboration between the Kowalski Brothers Trailworks, Iconic Trails and Pedal Power. Sugar Sugar, The Spine and Good Thing will be officially opened by @YvetteBerry at 10am Riding and smiling will follow along with refreshments, snags and tunes.
15.01.2022 The ACT Road Rules are very clear - A person MUST NOT ride a bicycle that does not have a bell, horn, or similar warning device, in working order AND if approaching pedestrians (or other cyclists) from behind, ring your bell to let them know you are coming. So, get a bell that suits your style and ring it loud and clear and often.
15.01.2022 Pedal Power can confirm that EVERY section of the Belconnen Bikeway is now open and the ACT Government has committed to further work to improve the links to the Belconnen Bikeway from the main path going to CIVIC via the CIT and on Aikman Drive. Further work is required to ensure there is a link along Benjamin Way to the C5 shared path that runs between Woden/Tuggeranong and Belconnen.
12.01.2022 PP Dirt Riders on the Burra Rd to Michelago for coffee. It would make a great loop ride once the #FriendsofMonaroRailTrail get the rail trail going.
10.01.2022 Pedal Power has a new co-patron who knows all about the benefits of bike riding. In Denmark: 16% of all trips are by bicycle. 24% of trips below 5 km are by bicycle.... Every Dane cycles 1.1 km on average each day. 36% of all Danish adults ride a bike to work daily or once a week. See more
07.01.2022 Are you heading down to the Bay this weekend? Why not take your bike and give the new Eurobodalla bike lanes a trial. We'd like to hear your feeback.
06.01.2022 Electric bikes open up the option of cycling as a viable mode of transport for a greater proportion of our community. The more people we can encourage to cycle the better. It will improve community's health and wellbeing, reduced transport emissions, reduce road congestion, and make Canberra a more liveable city.
05.01.2022 It is soooo exciting to see Stage 1 of the Heysen Street Link Path complete. This new path is the result of many years of advocacy by Pedal Power ACT and its members. We first raised the need for a separated path back in 2015 when we highlighted the need for east-west connection between Weston and the Woden Valley that didn't involve riding on the crumbling and inadequate shoulder on Heysen street. The ACT Equestrian Association, Weston Creek Community Council and Pedal Powe...r have worked together with the ACT Government to achieve a design that will work well for residents, horse riders and bike riders alike. It is a wide, smooth and properly separated path that will be heavily used by many Canberrans for years to come. A great result worth celebrating. Bring on the next two stages.
05.01.2022 Canberra’s bike owners have gone into high gear and locked up their details on Bikelinc. Bikelinc launched three months ago and the 1000th bike was registered ...this week. That's a bike registered every 20 minutes! Registering your ride on Bikelinc makes it easier for it to be returned to you if it’s recovered, and harder for a thief to sell it. Find out more here: bit.ly/3pReUcz
03.01.2022 In case you are stuck for Christmas present ideas Chris Steel MLA, the bike riders of Canberra would really love a path/cycle lane sweeper.
03.01.2022 Five food-delivery cyclists have died on Australian roads in the past three months, four in Sydney. Most commentary has focused on the harsh employment conditions that force people to take risks they shouldn’t have to. These problems should of course be fixed, but cycling in general is too dangerous in our cities. Bikes are fastest for distances up to 5km, even for beginners.
02.01.2022 Finding a safe place to park your bike in our city centres is already a bit of a problem in Canberra. Let’s hope there are so many people riding bikes, five years from now, that the ACT Government will have to consider building Japanese inspired BIKE PARKING STATIONS.
01.01.2022 RIDER ALERT!. The NCA is doing work on the Canadian Flagpole that will result in a large part of the LBG shared path (in the Bridge to Bridge loop section) being temporarily closed. A detour is in place for walkers AND RIDERS. Please share and alert other riders.
