24.01.2022 The results are in! Coordination works for fox control. Neighbours working together has long been touted as best practice for large scale feral animal control. By working together landholders can remove more animals at the same time saving each other time, money and effort each year. This partnership option was tested in a study that recorded lamb survivability in areas of coordinated fox control versus area without.... The results- The frequency and timing of fox control were correlated with lamb survival. Lamb survival was higher in areas where foxes were baited twice a year: in late winter/spring (when foxes breed) and autumn (when foxes disperse). The area covered by the control program was positively correlated with lamb survival. So, properties that had near neighbours participating in group fox control programs had higher survival of lambs than properties with no neighbours involved. You could replace lambs in this study with chickens, ducks or native animals. If we work together we can get more done. Contact the PHBG on [email protected] or 0474 242 223 for information on what control options are available to you, how the Group can support you and how to get your neighbours involved. https://pestsmart.org.au/pestsmart-cs-group-fox-programs/

18.01.2022 While checking your citrus trees for fruit fly check for this pest as well! Western Australian gardeners are reminded to check citrus trees for the destructive pest, citrus gall wasp, and prune any infested trees before moving them. The pest damages citrus trees by producing galls that weaken branches, eventually making them unproductive if left unmanaged.... The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - DPIRD and industry group WA Citrus are urging people who have recently purchased citrus trees to check their trees, after citrus gall wasp was recently found in a plant at a Bunbury nursery. 14.01.2022 It is the time of year when the Office of State Revenue sends out the State Governments Declared Pest Rate (DPR) Invoices. The DPR is administered by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - DPIRD to fund the activities of Recognised Biosecurity Groups (RBGs). 12.01.2022 Is there a more colourful pest? Rainbow Lorikeets are native to Eastern Australia and Northern WA but declared in the South West of WA due to their impacts on our agricultural sector and native flora and fauna. Large flocks of RL can strip a tree of its nectar removing an important food source for our native birds. This can be especially problematic on hot days over summer.... In 2019 landholders in the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale reporting loosing a high percentage of their fruit crops to the colourful pest. There are a range of management options available to landholders in the control of RL. See phbg.org/feral-animals for more information. Outside of the Perth metro area the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development - DPIRD can monitor and control flocks of RL to prevent them from establishing further south. If you see Rainbow Lorikeets you can contact the PHBG on 0474 242 223 or report them to the Pest and Diseases Information Service on (08) 9368 3080 or [email protected]. Make sure to note down when and where you have seen them and if they use the area routinely.
11.01.2022 Gympie Regional Council Land protection officer, Bree Galbraith says feral pigs get scattered by illegal hunting with dogs on public land and PHBG feral animal subcommittee member Tristan Barker agrees. I have been involved in trapping on private property where two weeks of pre-feeding and monitoring were wasted because shooters came onto the property and scattered the mob, it took an extra six weeks to collect them all up, Mr Barker said. Ad hoc shooting might remove one... or two pigs but it doesnt get the whole mob in the same way coordinated trapping can and one escaped sow can mean hundreds of new pigs. Before engaging in feral pig control check in with your neighbours to coordinate control activities. Contact the PHBG for more information on control methods available to landholders for feral pigs.

More information can be found on our website at www.phbg.org.... If you havent received yours yet it might still be coming but if you havent got one after a week let us know and we can send you one.

04.01.2022 Are you an accidental orchardist? Even if you have one or hundreds of fruit trees a fruit fly infestation can turn your crop into an inedible mess. WHAT TO WATCH FOR IN A FRUIT FLY ZONE... Watch for puncture wounds Check for secondary infections Keep an eye out for maggots in fruit Search for flying adult insects Monitoring is crucial and there are lots of online instructions on how to make a fruit fly trap out of kitchen recyclables. 03.01.2022 The end of the year is creeping upon us all. Soon it will be time for the calicivirus release to start. The PHBG runs the release at the end of the year when there are more flies to help spread the virus and food resources are lower leading to more success with pre-feeding beforehand. Theres a few steps involved detailed on our website (follow the link below).... This means landholders, that would like assistance controlling rabbit numbers, need to register before the program starts in September. Theres a link to register on the website or check the comment section to go straight there.
03.01.2022 The use of 1080 has been the crucial difference between a reduction in pest animal populations in some areas and the total annilation of some of our most vulnerable native animals. If you manage a property over 25 acres, and meet stringent safety requirements, the PHBG can assist you in the application of a restricted chemical permit, subsidies the permit application fee and in partnership with the Coolup LCDC cover the cost of your 1080 products. All this to help control the... number of feral animals in our patch such as foxes, rabbits and feral pigs. With the growing urbanisation of our semi-rural areas the oppurtunities for feral animals grows rather than disappears, with this environment supporting large numbers of feral animals. These feral animal populations then impact on surrounding natural areas and primary producers. Dont be the reason the farmer up the road looses 10 lambs in one night, the wine producer on the hill has his vines ruined by rabbits or your neighbour looses all their chickens. Every landholder has a responsibility to control feral animals on their land, get in touch with the PHBG so we can show you what options are available to you. The first step - check out our website at www.PHBG.org or email [email protected] for more information.
