02.01.2022 Disc herniation does NOT mean surgery. A disc herniation is a displacement of disc material (nucleus pulposus or annulus fibrosis). The highest prevalence is am...ong people aged 30-50 years, with a male to female ratio of 2:1. An MRI is able to identify even minor changes in the disc structure, however just because a disc herniation appears on MRI, it doesn't mean it's the cause of your pain. A study found 19-27% without symptoms had a disc herniation on imaging. Through conservative care such as chiropractic, a disc CAN heal.
