24.01.2022 Change is hard. When you are so used to life going a certain way it's hard to embrace doing things differently. Routine, structure and strategies are simply tools. It's up-to the individual if they want to give them a go. They may not even be helpful. It's a learning process. I get disappointed when you put everything in but don't have the desired outcome. Managing your expectations helps when things don't work out the way you intended. ... You can't stop change. Nothing stays the same always no matter how hard we try to be in control. Aim for balance instead.
23.01.2022 My go to strategy to recharge is connect to nature. Power of yellow!
23.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/586287028119355/posts/3429103067171056/ Doctors assume because you have a disability you are less intelligent and can't make informed medical decisions. This is not the case. We need to be empowered not talked down to. The medical profession are gate keepers and if you have to keep fighting the system to get your basic needs met that leaves no energy for living.
23.01.2022 I've been thinking of setting up a female, male or/and group autism social group here in Bendigo. What activities would interest you and when would you like it to run? Activities could include bush walks, theatre, live music, art, culture or anything that members were interested in. The focus would be about peer empowerment, social skills and connection within the autistic community. Let me know you thoughts. Open to feedback.
22.01.2022 I'm still finding my voice and trying to figure out exactly what I stand for and represent. As a Peer worker I don't want to push my lived experience on others but support people on their individual journey. I am learning so much working once more in the disability sector. I am not an expert although I like to think I am sometimes. But we can't not give something a go due to self doubt of not being good enough. No one would ever achieve anything if it was the case. I will make mistakes. And I will own that. Being human is OK.
20.01.2022 Great video from The Project about female late diagnosis of autism. This is also my story having being diagnosed at 36 after seeing countless specialists, psychologists and psychiatrists. https://www.facebook.com/107787018440/posts/10157792340498441/
20.01.2022 It's not about your limitations but what makes you feel alive. When the focus is always on the struggle, the fight against the system it leaves no energy for focussing on what makes us happy. We find our creativity and joy in so many places. Prioritise well-being.
20.01.2022 Our home is our safe space. Taking care of our home is part of our well-being.
18.01.2022 Yeme for the day Image description: photo of an unhappy person with text that reads "An autistic 'meltdown' is not a tantrum or poor behaviour. It is a sort of release valve in response to overload. It is not intentional and requires support, not punishment."
18.01.2022 I got the "You don't look Autistic yesterday." He then proceeded to tell me he can generally spot an autistic straight away and that I didn't sound like one. He then asked if I was a Savant. I said yes in some ways as I just didn't have the spoons to educate. I am a Savant in MASKING! I welcome conversations because then it gives me an opportunity to educate if they are interested in learning. If not I smile and MASK some more. Another person said my communication was too di...rect and didn't like it even though I was set to MASK ON. This is why being Authentic is not safe always for me as Autistic expression and communication style is just not understood or accepted by the mainstream. I look forward to the day where being Autistic is just another communication style and celebrated for how awesome it truly is. Polly Woodward
16.01.2022 Visited the Botanical gardens in White Hills yesterday. https://www.facebook.com/442167809195662/posts/3480360118709734/
14.01.2022 I have a wonderful lady who is going to be doing her placement with me at Peer Empowerment Support Services and would love to work with children with disabilities. I also have a fantastic teacher who is keen to work in this space. This would be a 2 for 1 package so if you feel this would be beneficial for your family please reach out and let me know. 12.01.2022 Fabulous new exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery. Love the Aboriginal fashion.
10.01.2022 Read this book yesterday. Absolutely brilliant. Coming of age story set in the near future. Covers the Deaf community beautifuly, peak energy and food security. All set in Melbourne my home town. If only I could read a book like this everyday!
08.01.2022 The joys of double empathy. I over communicate because people misunderstand me constantly because I use direct communication. Despite my best efforts, what I think is ultra super clear gets lost in translation when communicating with people. I think this is because I assume people are generally decent human beings and mean what they say. I take language literally. I wanted my business to be easier to use for people with disabilities and far more responsive than a heap of form...s before you could work with me. Sadly I've decided it's just not worth it for me personally as I have had a number of people take advantage of my caring and dedicated nature. I will now be following through with only be spending 15 minutes of my time unpaid for meet and greets done online or in person or phone. Then a service booking form must be completed. The reason I haven't enforced that with everyone has been because a lot of people have trouble completing the service agreement without help with understanding it. I prefer to provide that support with people if they want it. Not everyone is right for me to work with. I do not have the capacity to support people who cannot follow my service agreement. If you do not value my time or knowledge please do not ask to work with me. Polly Woodward
08.01.2022 My passions are going for bushwalks, having adventures and helping people with disabilities. As an autistic person, I have multiple passions. I love to get to know other people's interests and support people they way they need.
08.01.2022 What does self care look like for you? I found my morning free and treated myself to breakfast out. Everyone has different ways of putting themselves first. Mine is going out for coffee and bush walks. People with disabilities can struggle with self care due to financial, emotional and physical barriers. These are not easy things to overcome and work around. It can become overwhelming constantly fighting the system.
08.01.2022 This is a working from home position for a person with a disability.
07.01.2022 Christmas time can be very stressful. Self care and boundaries are super important to prioritize. It's OK to say no to social engagements, present expectations and large gatherings. If you are alone it can be equally challenging when everyone else is busy and focused on their families, work and parties and you are left out. Just do you! Work out what you value and focus on that.
07.01.2022 Self care is super important. I am taking time to recharge and get inspired. Having disabilities and being in a caring role with my work and children, it's critical to prioritise well-being and health. I am having a child free short break at Anglesea, bush walking and seeing the Great Ocean Road.
06.01.2022 Hi. Welcome everyone. Please invite other autistic friends that would be interested in getting together to support each other and socialise here in Bendigo and surrounding areas. We can meet monthly and go do an activity and catch up for coffee and a meal. This would be a informal gathering so if you need support please message me to see what arrangements are needed. First group possible start date is Saturday 9th of January. Please feel free to make suggestions on activity and cafe to meet at. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1045704002857079

03.01.2022 Are you out of spoons? Do you need a miracle? Clone yourself?... Double your energy? Sorry. I can't do any of those. However I can help with navigating the system. Mentor and provide practical support. Don't go it alone.
01.01.2022 There is always lots to spot when bush walking. I love wild flowers!
