20.01.2022 MYTH: Low-fat diets are recommended for good health TRUTH: It wasn’t all that long ago when dietitians were recommending people to strictly limit their fat inta...ke to help manage cardiovascular disease, diabetes and help with weight loss. New evidence has emerged showing that diets containing moderate amounts of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are in fact beneficial for heart health (such as the Mediterranean way of eating), and don’t necessarily contribute to weight gain, when they are replacing saturated fats. Some great ways to include healthy fats in your diet are: - Using avocado on toast, sandwiches and in salads - Snack on a handful of unsalted nuts - Eat more oily fish, such as salmon, sardines, mackerel and herring - Use olive oil for cooking and in salad dressings

01.01.2022 MYTH: People with diabetes cant eat certain fruits TRUTH: People with diabetes can eat all types of fruit. The most important factor is the amount of fruit con...sumed as eating too much fruit can raise blood glucose levels. Fruit may taste sweet but most types of fruit have a low glycemic index (GI). This means that they are slowly absorbed by the body. It is the fibre in the fruit that helps to slow down this process. Fruit is an important source of many vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, in particular Vitamin C, folate and potassium. People with diabetes should aim to eat 23 servings of fruit every day, and spread this out across the day. One serving of fruit is equal to 1 medium piece (e.g. 1 apple or banana), 2 small pieces (e.g. 2 small apricots or kiwi fruit) or 1 cup of cut-up fruit pieces.
