14.01.2022 A very dramatic winters day, luckily it stayed nice and warm with no wind or rain. All of the guests spotted turtles and have all had a blast seeing the hiking... spots and nature today How green is Maggie Island at the moment so many paddlers have commented! Looking back on some of the older photos (before the floods) the island was so brown, especially Mount Cook side. Big difference after a big wet! #magneticisland #townsville #kayaking

The bird life on Maggie is truly amazing, there is some 300 species who call the island home at some stage during the year so bring your binoculars... on your next Magnetic adventure! Year round you’ll spot rainbow lorikeets, a small and colourful parrot who’s habitat includes rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas (we definitely tick those habitat boxes!) @bungalowbay_yha offers a wildlife encounter each day at 4.15pm when you can hand feed the islands rainbow lorikeets. 03.01.2022 Can islanders and tourists PLEASE stay back from our wild koalas - especially mums and their joeys The koalas are facing lots of stresses at the moment 1. It’s ...really dry so food is not as nutritious so mums struggle to feed both themselves and their joeys at this time of year 2. It’s breeding season and the males are not particularly good at understanding that no means no from the girls - they will chase a mum with a back rider and then mum and baby get separated. If too small the baby needs to be reunited with mum or needs full time care - but only if found in time 3. Lots of people and traffic on the island - please SLOW down we have lost two mumma koalas in the past 3 weeks 4. Too many selfies Yes they are cute BUT please don’t get up close - I need people to understand the consequences of getting too close and crowding them in the wild An abandoned Joey can take up to 12 months of hand rearing with NO guarantee of survival Use your zooms people! Tour guides - please please understand the effects that taking multiple visitors to one koala and in particular a mum and Joey is having. The koala hospital can do so much but we desperately need islanders and tourists help keep our numbers down - Koalas should be able to live here in peace
