23.01.2022 YES, we are an essential service for people experiencing crisis! 22.01.2022 UNPOPULAR HOME TRUTH: PLEASE STOP COOKING FOR 'THOSE IN NEED'. There is a surplus of lovingly prepared and well-intentioned meals going into rubbish bins all across Central Melbourne. There are TOO MANY GROUPS COOKING. Yes some people doing it tough are accepting these meals, some because they are scared that the Welfare organisations will stop supporting them if they refuse the offer, some because they are free, and some are accepting them simply to be polite and gracious.... There are also a large number of people who accept items with the intention of distributing to others. (We are sorry if any of these truths are uncomfortable or inconvenient for anyone.) BUT TOO MUCH FOOD IS BEING WASTED, and now more than ever as the world pauses to take stock of what is truly important and attempt a 'hard reset', its important not to get caught up in stuff YOU feel like doing to keep busy, or to feel valued or to #giveback or be charitable. Now is the time for us all to LISTEN to what people in Crisis are SCREAMING OUT FOR. Aside from some outer suburbs of Melbourne where the homeless are completely forgotten, Inner Melbourne's residents are spoiled for choice for where to get free meals every single night of the week. Bread is practically being THROWN at them every single day as supermarkets and bakeries throw out thousands of loaves and rolls at the close of business. People don't need more cakes, they dont need more bickies, they don't need more soup, and they don't need another tinned food drive. We know people want to feel like they are doing SOMETHING. But there is no need to FUNDRAISE another SOUP KITCHEN and take FUNDS SEVERELY NEEDED from other areas. We are constantly being offered 100s of litres of soup, cakes and breads to fill our freezers with and we simply cannot accept it, and no its not because we do not appreciate it... its because it IS NOT NEEDED there is already way too much. People in the current crisis need housing, financial security, help with their kids, educational support and in-home help, legal aid and mental health support. If you truly want to help... please help with these areas!!!!!!!!!!!! Things are about to get a heck of a lot worse and as a community we are not ready for what is needed! See more
