02.01.2022 Are you a NIMBY? Anyone who answers "no" to the title question is either not clear on what a NIMBY is or should be nominated for sainthood! All of you who are not on the cusp of canonisation, read on.... NIMBY is an acronym for Not In My Back Yard, and nimbyism is human nature. It makes sense to be less than supportive of anything that doesn't benefit you and to oppose outright anything that actually disadvantages you. In fact, it's counterintuitive to act otherwise. "Oh, that will reduce the value of my property by tens of thousands of dollars? Why, please feel free to go right ahead and do it anyway." So how do we strike the balance between our NIMBY instincts and the greater good? In a large, diverse society such as ours, if it's every man and woman for him or herself, what hope do we have of creating anything that benefits everyone or, if not quite everyone, at least a majority? If the few with the most money and power make all the decisions, then there really is very little hope for everyone else. On the other hand if anyone can object to anything that doesn't suit them, how will anything get done? Both of those scenarios have been the case, with a single objector able to hold up a multi-million dollar development, and a handful of wealthy residents succeeding in having approved projects overturned. These days, community consultation is all the rage, but is it really "consultation" when it's only a forum for people to voice their objections before the plans go ahead anyway, with little or no modification to address the concerns of the objectors? Of course, there have also been plenty of examples of well-organised residents groups getting a lot of media coverage by positioning themselves as David fighting Goliath. We all love the underdog, so why wouldn't you paint yourself in that role to garner public sympathy? It's also worth keeping in mind that those who feel most strongly about any subject will be the most vociferous, occasionally coming across as if they're the only ones with a point of view, but often there's a far less motivated majority sitting quietly letting those who have the motivation fight things out. Whether it's the so-called sky rail in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs, public housing in Canberra, a mosque (pick a location), the WestConnex tunnel in Sydney's southwest, or any other proposed development, big or small, we should expect people to object and they are perfectly entitled to, which is why we have the mechanisms in place for them to do so. If we accept objections as inevitable a simple fact of development perhaps what we really need to answer is "how do we reach compromises that involve a little give from each side?".

01.01.2022 A revolutionary water-saving mechanism lifts urban renewal to its peak, with plans to fit rooftop rainwater tanks to residential apartments.
