25.01.2022 Congratulations to our Year 6s as they complete their Junior School years and move up to the Middle School! Head of the Junior School, Mr Carl Salt, asked them: What ideas matter? The ideas that matter to you right now, or in the future?" In answering, he quoted American writer and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson: "What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us." ... The rest of the Junior School surprised the Year 6s with a guard of honour as they walked to their Graduation Ceremony in the Middle School across glorious Kensington Oval.

23.01.2022 The Year 5 Musical at Pembroke is a much-anticipated event, every year, involving all Year 5 students who get to experience the thrill of planning, rehearsing and performing a live production. This year, each of our three Year 5 classes experienced a special Performance Day of the musical of Annie Jr which engaged students in costuming, make-up and final refinements to their performances; followed by a matinee show for their buddy class and culminating in an evening performance for their families. Our dedicated team of technical, teaching and Performing Arts staff supported students to achieve their personal best. Well done, Year 5! Photo credit: Event Photography

22.01.2022 Music has always been a big part of Pembroke and, during isolation, we had to find new ways of making music together. We are pleased to share with you this wonderful recording of 'We've Only Just Begun' featuring students from the Pembroke Choral Group Programme.

21.01.2022 Our Senior School students were so lucky to participate in our inaugural Careers Zoom series. During lunch sessions, old scholars and current parents shared their career stories with students via and gave advice on a career in their respective industries. 21.01.2022 Last weekend a group of talented students in Year 9 and 10 performed their own stunning version of Chicago. The production wowed audiences over four days, with students involved in every aspect including design, performance, and backstage crew. Our students were skillfully mentored throughout rehearsals and performances by teaching staff, industry professionals, and old scholars, who loved being back in the theatre (and all that jazz!). Directed by Ms Sharon Reynolds with Musical Direction by Ms Cassie Pope, Vocal Direction by Ms Mim Sarre (2012) and Choreography by Mrs Georgina (Lockert) Harris (2011).

20.01.2022 Our adventurous Year 9s have been spending time camping in the wonderful Innes National Park on Yorke Peninsula! They explored the local beaches, took morning swims in the gulf waters, and stepped out of their comfort zones with abseiling, body surfing, coastal trekking, and camping under the stars.

18.01.2022 Did you know that Pembroke offers its community an online subscription to SchoolTV, which contains a wealth of research-based resources on the challenges of raising happy, well and resilient young people? June is Resilience Month at Pembroke. Resilience is the ability to respond to change and bounce back from adversity and enables us to approach other people and situations with confidence and optimism. This mindset is especially important for students given the enormous changes and challenges they face throughout adolescence. School TV provides many resources on how to cultivate a resilient mindset in our children, family, and self: https://senior-pembroke.sa.schooltv.me/newsletter-re//3295

09.01.2022 At its core, reconciliation is about building respectful relationships between First Nations people and the wider Australian community. Indigenous Education@Pembroke enables us to develop respectful relationships through conversation, education and community engagement. Were #InThisTogether as students and staff at Pembroke commemorate Reconciliation Week 2020 and we remember two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: the 1967 Referendum and the 1992 High Cour...t Mabo decision. 2020 is also the 20th anniversary of the monumental display of support for reconciliation when around 250,000 Australians walked across the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the Peoples Walk for Reconciliation. We were fortunate to have a visit from Uncle Mickey OBrien, a Senior Kaurna man who performed a Smoking Ceremony in the R A Cook Chapel prior to conversations with students and staff as part of our #NRW2020 activities.

08.01.2022 A visit to our ELC is always a thought provoking experience. Our ELC students have used their inquiring minds to explore the commitment of first nations people in their custodianship of the land. The children have been learning the Kaurna language and exploring Aboriginal culture. A collaborative art work allowed for discussion, reflection and a deeper appreciation for the land, animals and people who share Australia with us.

07.01.2022 Our Year 6s have been testing the waters in rowing! Those interested in joining our rowing teams this season came out to the Torrens to see what it’s all about and give it a go. 05.01.2022 The Middle School Compassion Project is a 28-day focus on students' spiritual development within Pembroke's uniquely non-denominational ethos. It encourages students to choose one compassionate practice to do daily, with the aim to turn this practice into a habit. We have the ability with disciplined, repetitive action, to construct new habits of thought, feeling, and behaviour. Professor Karen Armstrong

05.01.2022 The Year 6 students shared their knowledge and creativity using the iPads to film their Reception buddies playing outside. 04.01.2022 Our biannual service trip to Cambodia has been postponed to 2021. However, we are ensuring the support of our two charities Khemara and Home of Hope continue by raising funds so that our service project of renovating a Khemara school library could still go ahead. The Middle School Cambodia Causes Team organised a casual day, pizza lunch and have been selling lolly bags and House wrist bands throughout this week.

04.01.2022 With the final graduation and award ceremonies completed, the school grounds strangely quiet without students, and goodbyes said that’s a wrap for 2020 at Pembroke! It’s been a memorable year and one in which we have really lived our motto: Ex Unitate Vires (Out of Unity, Strength). Congratulations and farewell to the following staff who are leaving Pembroke after longstanding service: Ms Alison Bell, Ms Lesley Doughty, Mr Don Fogg (pictured), Mr Simon Grubb (pictured), Mr... Tony Hill, Ms Annie Nancarrow, and Mr Julian Trudinger. And while it’s been ups and downs this year, old scholar Eddie Sims (2018) articulated what many of us have felt about this unpredictable, but rewarding year we’ve had in 2020: "The confidence to undertake new challenges by making another plan, by finding another way I attribute to my experience at Pembroke." Wishing everyone in the Pembroke community a happy, relaxing and safe festive season. See you in 2021.

03.01.2022 Did you know that anxiety is a normal response to environmental expectations and/or potential changes in brain chemistry during key adolescent developmental stages? However, for many young people anxiety becomes an overwhelming experience that can impact their daily lives. Some adolescents will experience an anxiety disorder, making anxiety the most common mental health disorder of childhood and adolescence. At Pembroke, we support students every day with issues of anxiety, a...nd we acknowledge that Term 3 can see an increase in anxiety for Senior students as their impending departure from school looms large. Understanding the experience of someone who struggles with anxiety can be a challenge. SchoolTV offers a wide range of materials on anxiety, including this excellent fact sheet: https://senior-pembroke.sa.schooltv.me//Anxiety_Fact_Sheet See more

03.01.2022 During the July holidays the cast of the Middle School Musical Chicago participated in a two day "Boot Camp". They were fortunate to hone their vocal skills with the help of Award Winning Cabaret Star and Old Scholar Michael Griffiths. WAAPA graduate Joe Meldrum, who recently appeared in the Australian production of Chicago helped the students further develop their choreography. The students learnt a great deal from these two professionals and we are very grateful to the Drama and Film Forum for supporting this opportunity. Rehearsals continue this term and will culminate in performances in mid September at Norwood Concert Hall.
