21.01.2022 Well, swarm season is here already. Working the hives today I found one in the early stages of preparing to swarm. In another week it would have been gone. Feral hives will also be sending out swarms soon, and we'll start seeing them hanging from trees, bushes, fences. If one lands in your garden, don't panic and turn the hose on it; they're usually quite gentle and move on their own in a day or two. Or if you're around Henty, The Rock, Culcairn or Junee, you could give me a ...call on 0401 123 303 and I'll come over and pick it up. I'll also start putting swarm boxes around to try and lure a few that way. If you're not sure what a honeybee swarm looks like, here's a photo of one I picked up a couple years ago. 15.01.2022 We did a cut-out of this chonker of a feral colony hanging in Cindy & Steven's stables today. First we had to cut out the natural comb piece by piece to fit into our own frames, holding them in with elastic bands until the bees can attach it themselves with wax. Then we shook as many of the bees in as we could, letting the rest follow. Hopefully they love their new home. Very awkward and sticky work on top of a ladder, but well worth it! 07.01.2022 Packing down the last of the hives before winter, and on fine, sunny days like these, the bees are still bringing the nectar in. It shakes out of the frames like rain. I'm not sure what this tree is, but they're really loving it! This brood frame comes from maybe our star Henty hive. 03.01.2022 The wattles have been flowering for a while now. This is a Cootamundra Wattle, I think (but I could be wrong), not a honey tree but a useful pollen source early in the season. Very high protein content to the pollen, which is what the colony needs to build up strength going into spring.

02.01.2022 Soursob AKA soursod AKA sourgrass. Oxalis pes-caprae. One of those invasive, toxic-to-livestock weeds that only a beekeeper could love. It's been flowering for a couple weeks now and on beautiful sunny winter days like this the girls are bringing home the pollen, which they do well on, and maybe a little nectar.
