24.01.2022 Finally, they are out! Australia’s 'Artificial Light Pollution Guidelines for Wildlife' were endorsed by the 13th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (COP13) in Gandhinagar, India over the weekend. This endorsement by the 130 signatory countries recognises the leading role Australia has taken to address this emerging environmental threat. Our team and other external experts/specialists worked long and hard to draft the original version of these Guidelines. We are so pleased to see they have now been endorsed.

24.01.2022 We recently assisted resourc.ly with developing a series of short videos about the flatback turtle. This video features Kellie talking about the growth of the Gorgon Flatback Turtle Tagging Program to what it is today

23.01.2022 The 5th Artificial Light at Night Conference in Utah is over. Kellie and Adam are back! Kellie was recognised for development of Sky42, the digital camera-based technique which quantifies sky glow for ecological objectives.... Adam brought them up to speed with LED lighting impacts on wildlife and ecological health and ourtechniques to detect, measure and manage the impacts. 21.01.2022 Our Artificial Light Monitoring capabilities have expanded to include a light sensor array that, when integrated with a long-range WiFi connection, allows for near real-time regional monitoring of light. This article details a case study where we applied this technology to produce a real-time heat map of artificial light across a 10 km region. http://penv.com.au//real-time-heat-map-of-urban-sky-brigh/

21.01.2022 Our field team working hard to excavate a hatched flatback turtle nest. We use the data to identify incubation success and assess the overall suitability of the nesting habitat.

20.01.2022 We were recently challenged by Chevron Australia to develop and trial a method for tracking multiple hatchling sea turtles offshore at the same time. For the trial, we tested different types of specialised VHF receivers that were mounted to a UAV to see if they could detect and track the location of light-weight VHF transmitters. Check out this short video showcasing the trial. Bosey Slater Photography

20.01.2022 This episode features Kellie describing how the Gorgon Gas Project was designed to minimise the impact of artifical light to hatchling flatback turtles

19.01.2022 This summer, weve teamed up with Dr Chris Surman to monitor seabird populations in the Pilbara for a number of Clients.

19.01.2022 Mundabullangana is home to one of Australias largest populations of flatback turtles. It acts as our reference site for the Gorgon Marine Turtle Monitoring Program at Barrow Island. The nesting beach is incredibly remote and its a great place to star watch.

18.01.2022 Just a reminder that volunteer applications for the 2019/20 Gorgon Flatback Turtle Tagging Program are open until 8th September. Dont forget to visit www.penv.com.au/opportunities to apply!

16.01.2022 We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team as a Junior Technical Specialist. For more details, please see our listing on Seek (https://bit.ly/2G0bnWf). Note that we will only consider applicants that meet the job criteria.

16.01.2022 70% of flatback turtle hatchlings entering the sea for the first time near a jetty dont make it past the jetty. Predation rates are high near offshore infrastructure. Typical hatchling predation at nesting beaches without offshore infrastructure? 10%... Research published in Biological Conservation this month by Philippa Wilson, supported by AIMS, UWA, DBCA and Pendoley Environmental. 16.01.2022 A major contributor to light pollution, LED signs and billboards, or EMCs (short for Electronic Messaging Centers) are up to ten times brighter than ordinary billboards, affecting breeding, foraging and orientation behaviours in nocturnal wildlife. But when installed and operated in accordance with the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) Guidance for EMCs they can actually create a net reduction in sky brightness. 13.01.2022 Merry Christmas from everyone at Pendoley Environmental

12.01.2022 We recently hosted a recognition function for our hard-working volunteers that participated in last seasons Gorgon Flatback Turtle Tagging Program. Remember, applications for next season open in July!

12.01.2022 Thats right! Voted in last week, Dr Kellie Pendoley will be President of the 41st International Sea Turtle Symposium to be held in Perth in 2021

12.01.2022 A reminder that volunteer applications for the 2020/21 Flatback Turtle Tagging Program will close on Sunday 6th September. This is a fantastic opportunity to visit some remote parts of WA and get first-hand experience of working with Australias own flatback turtle. You can apply here: www.penv.com.au/opportunities

11.01.2022 Here is another great video about flatback turtles that we assisted resourc.ly with.

11.01.2022 Dr Kellie Pendoley and Adam Mitchell have just completed a benchmark artificial lighting survey in Dunedin, New Zealand. The local council will be conducting a retrofit of their street lighting to smart LEDs over the next two years and required the survey to ensure protection of their stunning dark skies.

08.01.2022 Munda group one back in Perth last week. They saw some early flatback hatchlings (in November.... lucky!) and had a visit from a remigrant turtle as she returned to nest at the same beach after being tagged in the 1990s. Successful trip guys See you at the wind-up next year!

07.01.2022 Our Managing Director, Dr Kellie Pendoley, was recently interviewed for ABC Radios Science Show about the impact of light pollution on animals (including turtles). You can listen to it here: https://www.abc.net.au//how-light-pollution-impa/12052976

06.01.2022 We recently updated our website to reflect our expanding artificial light monitoring service. Take a look at www.penv.com.au

06.01.2022 Astrofest is here again! Adam and Jo will be manning a table on Saturday evening at Curtin Stadium, come and say hello! (Its free!) http://www.astronomywa.net.au/astrofest.html

06.01.2022 What a great time to not be on a beach! Our fisheye remote light monitoring cameras captured images of a big storm in February from one of our client sites in WA. Check out the lightning!

05.01.2022 Finally, they are out! 05.01.2022 We are back from two weeks of monitoring marine turtle populations in the Lowendal Islands. As well as marine turtle tagging, track census, hatchling orientation, and incubation success monitoring, we ran educational turtle tours for the onsite workforce. The best part? Watching the people on our tours see adult turtles nesting and hatchlings emerging and making it to the ocean for the first time.

05.01.2022 Our field team recently completed a survey to record the offshore dispersal of hatchling flatback turtles after leaving the nesting beach at night. We observed the hatchlings using infra-red night vision goggles and followed them using a small vessel. The data is used to understand hatchling behaviour and survivorship in proximity to offshore infrastructure for one of our clients.

04.01.2022 Dr Kellie Pendoley attended the National Environmental Health Association Conference. Her presentation addressed the human health effects of artificial light and the limitations of the Australian Standards to control obtrusive lighting. The abstract is available at the link below.

04.01.2022 You probably know us as the turtle monitoring experts, but thats not all we do! This year, Pendoley Director Dr Kellie Pendoley and Senior Marine Scientist Dr Annabel Knipe worked with a client in the Falkland Islands to assess the impact of artificial light from a proposed FPSO on seabirds in the area. By identifying potentially sensitive species, like albatrosses and shearwaters, and how they may be affected, she could help guide best practice lighting design and managemen...t for the project. 03.01.2022 We recently completed a survey that measured the bearing of green turtle hatchlings after they were released from the centre of an arena. The purpose was to identify the hatchlings orientation on the beach without the influence of certain environmental variables. The recorded data will provide information for one of our clients environmental management plans.
