25.01.2022 "See, I felt like it was a white bow kind of day but now I am having second thoughts..." What colour would you choose? I am pretty much always an orange, purple or green person.
25.01.2022 You know you have chosen the right bridesmaids to be by your side when they can simultaneously help you in to your shoes, hold you steady, wipe your tears, blink through their own tears and have a laugh. These women were such a tight (and hilariously giggly) trio on Saturday and a scream to be around. While I mostly post family work on here, I also shoot a variety of other things including weddings. To see more wedding work head to Instagram @pkphotographyweddings
24.01.2022 It is World Ballet Day today! For those of you who don't know, I also shoot dance and I love it! My dancing days are over and so I think the next best place to be, when you can't be on stage, is back stage and in the wings. So much hard work, planning and dedication goes in to holding a concert and this selection gives you just a peep at that an some of the beautiful results on stage.... Tag your dance friends and teachers to share the World Ballet Day love! PS There are still some weekends available around annual concert time. There are special We've Moved to Newcastle rates in place for dance schools who book 2018 concert photography with me.
23.01.2022 Open wide! It is always a good feeling when your kids love what you serve up. What is a guaranteed winner in your home?
22.01.2022 Have you got any goals or projects for 2019? I am taking on a photo-a-day project again this year. For those following along at home, some will go up here, many more will be on www.instagram.com/pk.photo.graphy and I will put a monthly round up on my blog.
22.01.2022 Every season has pros and cons. Being a cooler weather person, Autumn and Winter are more my thing. Especially when you can play all day long in this kind of warming sun without overheating or getting burnt. Perfect for making special potions.
20.01.2022 Project 365 | February A photo a day. Aiming for the whole year but taking it one month at a time.
20.01.2022 The school holidays are coming to a close here. Recently, Evie and Olive opened a day spa for their My Little Pony toys. What kind of things have you and your kids gotten up to?
19.01.2022 When yesterday felt like Friday and it STILL isn't Friday...
19.01.2022 Windows down, the wind in our hair and on the way to the beach.
19.01.2022 Project 365 | March A photo a day for a whole year but I am taking it one month at a time. I am behind on sharing this (April was pretty busy with our trip!) but here is the month of March. A photo a day. I missed two days this month so substituted other pictures from the month but I am not beating myself up over that.
18.01.2022 On Sunday, Evie tied her Nippers cap on for the last time this season. We have loved our introduction to Redhead SLSC through Redhead Nippers and cannot wait for the season to start up again later in the year. I am so proud that she took on something she had never done before. In fact, before we moved to Newcastle we'd only been to the beach a handful of times. Over the course of the season, I saw her become more confident in the waves and it has cemented her newfound love of the beach.
18.01.2022 Last night, Josh and I went to a gig. It was the first one in quite some time and it was so restorative! Going to live music was something we did at least once a weekend in the time BC (Before Children). We still got out out to see our favourites bands when we could and a festival when Evie was a few months old but life BC presented so many more opportunities to just head to a favourite venue or even go out to dinner. I guess I don't realise how much I miss those opportun...ities, or how important they are, until we get out on our own for a bit again. I found myself getting excited while I anticipated the sticky carpet, smiling as the room filled and the general murmur grew louder and when those first bass drum beats were felt in my rib cage - I was so alive. I felt recharged. While I don't want it to be so long between loud, live music again the benefits of last night will last so much longer than the venue stamp. (And a quick nap helped me catch up after a late night...)
17.01.2022 Podcast suggestions! I have caught up with the podcasts I listen to and after suggestions. I listen to Bang On, Ladies We Need to Talk, Conversations with Richard Fidler, Lore, Small Town Dicks, Do You Need a Ride, This American Life, My Favorite Murder and bits and pieces of others here and there. As well as photography related ones. ... Unfortunately, I struggle with more longform ones (Serial, Teacher's Pet and the like) where I should be remembering details. So ones where episodes aren't linked by a story are ideal. Aaaaaand go!
17.01.2022 Project 365 - A Photo a Day January Previously, I have grouped the 'photo a day' pictures in weeks but seeing them as a whole month is real motivation to make it to the end of the year! These are just simple, everyday moments. All unposed except the self portraits.... Also, see Olive's chocolate eyes on 23rd of January? Kids do strange things If you are keen to see any in more detail, I will be posting favourites at www.instagram.com/pk.photo.graphy
15.01.2022 I honestly don't know who was enjoying this game more. These two who had the thrill of anticipation or me who, as a bystander, got to see it all. To photograph families in their homes, where they are most comfortable and at ease, is a great experience. It means little games like this can happen naturally. Steph and I were chatting about science and the environment while Mel was busy doing her own thing. Then the game began with Mel's giggles at discovering Mum around the corner.
15.01.2022 The sign on the door was made by a very proud big brother (5 years old) who wanted his baby brother, Oscar, to have a name sign on his door as well. This is why, in my humble opinion, documentary newborn sessions are the best. They happen in your home. So all the details of those early days of their life are included in their photos.
14.01.2022 We just got back from our 8200km road trip that covered five states and territories of Australia. When you ask the girls what their favourite bit of the trip was they both say the places we stayed at with pools. Not camping by the Murray River, seeing Uluru, exploring gem mines or any of those kind of things. The pools. Kids...
13.01.2022 How are you going through isolation? We have our ups and down each day and across the week. The girls were bickering A LOT the other day before rediscovering some balloons we'd blown up for my brother's birthday family video call. The game they created seemed to be a great way to get out that argumentative energy while having fun.... So, I recommend balloons to kids of all ages. Littler ones to play keepy uppy and bigger one to bash each other with
13.01.2022 Baking is one of my favourite things to do so when Christmas is getting near, rest assured you will find me in the kitchen. This year I tried cooking something I hadn't before. My maternal great-Grandfather's boiled Christmas Pudding. I took some pictures and wrote a short blog about it if you want to see more. http://pk-photography.com.au/my-great-grandfathers-pudding/... This is me signing off for the festive season as my in-laws are due soon.
13.01.2022 Camping, work, study and life have gotten in the way a little at posting regularly on here, although I am not great at regular posting anyway. With all that being said, to be honest, the biggest impact on keeping up with editing and social media time in general has been rediscovering the Sims4 Three camping trips so far plus our trip to Uluru are definitely a highlight this year. We do love the great outdoors!
10.01.2022 Last year I applied to become a member of Documentary Family Photographers. It is a worldwide community that celebrates real family life through promoting documentary family photography and connecting families with their local documentary family photographer. Their latest blog post is up on the theme of Summer and if you head to the post, you will see so many great images (and will spot one of mine!) https://www.documentaryfamilyphotographers.com/documentary/
10.01.2022 The girls shared a bedroom for 6 months. When we moved from that house, they got their own bedrooms but have had sleepovers every Friday and Saturday night (plus all nights of the school holidays) since then. For Friday night's sleepover they made the biggest cushion and blanket bed I have ever seen. Saturday morning rolled around and it was raining outside so we had some fun on their sleepover bed.
08.01.2022 Olive had found a big leaf and was playing a game, using it as a shield. During a particularly fierce battle, the shield broke and she asked if I could teach her to sew. Shield fixed :)
08.01.2022 During their vows, Amie got a little emotional. I loved that Chad gently put his hand on her shoulder in an unobtrusive "You've got this, I am here by your side" way. She was able to take a breath and continue. These seemingly small gestures are what I love most about photographing weddings - they are the bits that are unique to each couple.
06.01.2022 Two years ago, I was sitting back feeling so proud to have finished the install on my very own exhibition at a real gallery. The Patchwork of Childhood at Braemar Gallery in Springwood NSW. Tonight, I (along with the rest of the world), find myself sitting back in the quiet of the night pondering how things are right now. At the moment we can't go to galleries, museums or our local libraries. This doesn't mean creativity must stop though, our love of the arts can continue ...in the form of virtual tours, eBooks and live streaming of all sorts. All things that can be enjoyed from home. Keep creating your art. Follow artists on their social media. Many may be looking for new ways to generate an income; they may do reruns of that print you missed out on or run an art class online you could join.
06.01.2022 Exploring new parks is always a treat. If you haven't been to Richley Reserve, I highly recommend it! There are so many different sections to it making it appropriate for all ages.
06.01.2022 So much parenting actually happens behind the scenes. It isn't usually until we are much older that we realise how many times Mum saved us by holding our older sibling back on the slide :D
05.01.2022 Well the Jeep is now loaded with luggage (and not family members) and we are on our way to Uluru! There will be the odd post here and there and I won't be responding to emails until we are home. Plenty of driving hours to fill in with the kids so I would love to hear what you do on car trips to pass the time.
05.01.2022 Aimee and Jenna Hobbs are documentary family photographers from the US who are getting some recognition for their work in an international prize. It is always so great to see documentary family photography being published or as finalists in photography competitions.
05.01.2022 Back to school! Have you adjusted back in to the routine? I this your first year as a school parent? Aside from Evie picking up a bug from school (picture in the comments), things have beenreasonably smooth here.
05.01.2022 SURPRISE! Stacy and Greg (whose wedding I photographed last year) hired me to photograph the surprise 50th wedding anniversary lunch of Greg's parents. Such an awesome milestone and they had so many special friends celebrating with them.... "I have tears in my eyes as I look at these photos. They are beautiful! You have absolutely captured the love in the day, you can feel it through the pictures." Stacy after viewing the gallery. It was so exciting, waiting for Robert and Jill to arrive. Do you prefer to be a surpriser or a surprisee?
04.01.2022 I am not a morning person but sometimes I wake up ready to start the day without a several hour warm up period. On those days, we have pancakes for breakfast. Do you have a special weekend breakfast?
04.01.2022 So many cool memories and adventures but their highlight of the trip?
04.01.2022 Suzi asked me to come over one school afternoon and photograph a scoot/ride/walk to the local park. It got pretty cold so we went back home for hot chocolates and biscuits (making sure not to eat too many because they were going out for dinner!) Have you got an afternoon activity that you love doing with your family? Music composed by Close Encounters Music... https://www.songtradr.com/ethan.close #closeencountersmusic See more
02.01.2022 Happy New Year! Things were pretty quiet here last night but we did light some sparklers! What did you get up to?
02.01.2022 I am at the #sunflowerfestival tonight. This fundraiser for #sunflowersforjess is going to be amazing. Doors open soon and I can't wait to photograph the auction, raffle, live surfboard painting, silent disco, live music and amazing food and drinks on offer. www.sunflowersforjess.com.au Stand tall and face the sun with Jess
01.01.2022 I loved swinging when I was younger. I still do actually. I impatiently wait my turn at the park and once the girls are off climbing other things, I jump on. This poor tree branch can't quite take me swinging on it but the girls love it. So I usually do my other favourite childhood activity - climb trees!
