25.01.2022 Penguin is a picturesque seaside town with a pretty esplanade, scenic walking trails, wonderful beaches, great coastal drives, lovely parks, fun playgrounds and... a quirky collection of penguins in the street. Penguin, which lies on the north coast between Burnie and Devonport, is located 131 km north-west of Launceston via Deloraine, 17 km east of Burnie and 32 km west of Devonport. Sitting on the edge of mighty Bass Strait, it's obvious our town dearly loves its little feathered friends. The noted botanist, Robert Campbell Gunn, observing the large numbers of fairy (little) penguins along the coast decided that the name Penguin was appropriate. He named the settlement in 1861. There's our 10-foot big penguin that makes a quirky photo opportunity, along with penguin bollards, rubbish bins and various other unique attractions including our TARDIS Penguin Book Exchange. Other things of interest include Hiscutt Park with its Dutch Windmill, resident ducks and platypuses. The coastal road between Ulverstone and Wynyard is a beautiful scenic drive with sweeping ocean views, great picnics spots and clean beaches for seaside walks and fun. Look out for the expansive wild garden that blooms year round between the road and the railway line and explore one of the many walking tracks across the Dial Range, with stunning views over Penguin and the north-west coast. There is an outstanding website (check out http://penguinheritagetrail.com.au) which has information on historic places in the district. It has photos and detailed descriptions of all the places of interest. There are plenty of eateries and places to stay and on Sundays, Penguin hosts Tasmania's largest undercover market with more than 200 stalls. Penguin has a population of approximately 3,850. The Penguin Visitor Information Centre at 78 Main Road, Penguin is a great place to start your visit and is open daily 9am - 4pm (October - May), 9.30am - 3.30pm (June - September).
