24.01.2022 Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colors flowers, so does art color life. Quote by John Lubbock

23.01.2022 Are you considering joining the challenge. Let’s see what creative spirits we have amongst PAS members. Recreate Your Favourite Art During The Homemade Masterpiece Challenge Can’t go to galleries or museums to check out the world’s greatest pieces of art? No problem. Go through your art books or browse art galleries online to find an artwork to recreate at home.... Since we could all use a little happiness right now, and we’ve got plenty of time to get creative, now is the perfect opportunity to participate in the Homemade Masterpiece Challenge. Peninsula Arts Society is challenging members to recreate famous art from galleries or museums using things you have at home. Your photos can be as simple or complex as you want them to be. Here are some loose guidelines for recreating your art masterpiece: Choose a favourite artwork. Find three or more things lying around your house. Recreate the artwork with those items. Take a picture and share with P.A.S. members by phone, email or on social media. Go one step further PAINT YOUR VERSION then share with us.

05.01.2022 DESTINY is now open at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Fed Square. Destiny Deacon and Virginia Fraser created this interior specifically for this exhibit...ion. Over the past thirty years, Deacon has created a number of domestic interiors presented inside gallery settings. These lounge rooms and kitchens are always, to an extent, based on Deacon’s own home. Objects, photographs, posters, flags and various knick-knacks turn otherwise ordinary domestic interiors into identifiably blak spaces. The room is filled with Deacon's personal collection of 'Koori kitsch'. At best, these knick-knacks portray Aboriginal people as merely decoration and at worst, represent overtly racist perspectives of Aboriginal people. Over the years Deacon has amassed a considerable collection of Koori kitsch. In her own words, she has been rescuing Koori kitsch ‘since forever’: ‘In the beginning I wanted to rescue them, because otherwise they’d end up in a white home or something, somewhere no one would appreciate them.’ By amassing her personal collection and putting it inside the Gallery, Deacon challenges audiences to consider how everyday material culture can be, and often is, inherently racist. Deacon also elevates these objects, removing their status as derogatory and giving them with a second, more dignified, life. 04.01.2022 I recall Colin Johnson’s work with Wilderness Coast Artists. Put this in your diary.

04.01.2022 What is your source of IKIGAI? In the western world our value as people and our own sense of self-worth is determined primarily by our success. Many people are under unnecessary pressure to succeed by societal norms. Using this value system, we are only worthy if we can point to concrete achievements and material gains. However, in other cultures different philosophies apply. For instance, the Japanese concept of ikigai which has been studied by researchers and found to lead ...to less stress, better health, longer lifespans and greater individual happiness. Maybe we could all benefit from more ikigai and less external stress? Ikigai literally translates as ‘iki’ (to live) and ‘gai’ (reason). The five pillars of Ikigai are: starting small, releasing yourself, harmony and sustainability, the joy of little things, and being in the here and now. Ikigai is a way to describe the way an individual finds pleasure and meaning in their own life. It is a value to live by without having to prove yourself to others in any way. I have discovered my Ikigai is ‘loving, learning and making.’ Note: these are all verbs. Each day brings me happiness and meaning if I am in some way showing love to my family and friends, if I learn something or if I make something. If I manage all three of these in one day it is a very good day indeed! And I often do just that. All I need to do is phone or message a friend, do a little reading or viewing, and create something as basic as a homemade biscuit or a healthy meal, and I am content in my own space and time. If I spend some time working on longer term projects each day, such as a piece of textile work which I am planning to give to a friend or family member and which causes me to investigate new techniques, I am in a state of perpetual ikigai! That is a very good state to be in, and I don’t need to be anywhere special or have expensive new equipment or rely on anyone else. You may already know your own ikigai but never have expressed it in this way. Or, you may like to explore this philosophy further. If so, you can take some time to do a little internet research or read The Little Book of Ikigai live a happy and long life the Japanese way by Ken Mogi. Wishing you well, Merril Darling PAS Class Secretary See more

04.01.2022 Valerie Dunsford kindly shared a few thoughts and a delightful painting Like everyone, I was lacking a bit of joy, so I put paint to paper and just let it do it's own thing and this was the result. I thought, even in lockdown, we can't lockdown our hearts. Our joy is still there, quietly waiting for us to reclaim it.
