25.01.2022 , . This theme for NAIDOC Week (8-15 November) recognises First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years, and acknowledges our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact. We’re proud to be celebrating the rich history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and community members.... Peninsula Health acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land on which our services are located and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. With public events still on hold due to COVID-19, this year’s celebrations are online to book your spot at any of the many virtual events happening locally, go to https://bit.ly/3eFL1Yb (Frankston City Council) and https://bit.ly/2IfFH1l (Mornington Peninsula Shire). #NAIDOC2020

25.01.2022 Hey you mob, we know this year has thrown up countless challenges, but we’re just so proud of the way staff and local communities have worked together to provide culturally safe support - to our patients, their families and each other. And after this year like none other, our Elder/Cultural Lead Aunty Helen Bnads wants to share with you a very special Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander message to coincide with our Thank You Festival. Peninsula Health acknowledges the Bunurong and the Boon Wurrung and the people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of this Land on which our services are located, and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging.

25.01.2022 Earlier in the week we took a significant step in our reconciliation journey, unveiling our third Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) which builds on years of work building relationships and improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The RAP is our shared commitment as a health service, towards greater understanding and acknowledgement of our shared history with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Peninsula Health Elder/Cultur...al Lead, Aunty Helen Bnads says the new plan is action orientated. It is smart. When I say smart, I mean it’s specific, it’s measurable, it’s attainable, it’s relevant and it’s time bound, she says. To mark the occasion, local Gunditjmara Kirrae Wurrung-Bundjalung man Lionel Lauch performed the cleansing ancient custom of a smoking ceremony on the grounds of Bunjilwarra at Hastings. Watch in full below. Read more: https://www.peninsulahealth.org.au//peninsula-health-unve/ Our RAP is available at https://www.peninsulahealth.org.au/about-us/publications/

23.01.2022 Reaching for a biscuit? It might sound like the ideal pick-me-up this afternoon, but this short-term fix might end up making you feel even worse. Healthy eating patterns do more than keep us physically healthy, these nutritious food choices also support better mental wellbeing. Andie from our Health Promotion team takes a closer a look at these "good mood foods" which positively influence our minds.... 23.01.2022 The countdown to the AFL Grand Final has begun. There was plenty of yellow and black splashed around Frankston Hospital this week, but that did not deter our Cats-supporting staff members from sharing their passion for Geelong. While cardiologist Dr Geoff Toogood - who would normally wear his loudest on Crazy Socks 4 Docs Day (June each year) - was all too happy to get into his brightest from head to tie. ... May the best team win. Leave your tip in the comments below.

23.01.2022 Normally Jenna Nelson is caring for patients in the Frankston Emergency Department, but for most of this year she’s been doing what she does best - away from the hospital. The Clinical Nurse Specialist leapt at the opportunity to play a part in our Covid-19 response, taking on the role of Associate Nurse Unit Manager at our drive-through Screening Clinic in Seaford over the past three months. It’s been an amazing experience to set up and coordinate a major testing location o...n a daily basis, seeing as many as 600 patients a day, says Jenna. The team I have been working with have been amazing. Despite the long days on your feet and being outside in the elements, they always manage to smile under their masks, remain calm and maintain a professional manner. Thank you Jenna for caring for our community through Covid-19. The drive-through Screening Clinic at Seaford has re-located to the corner of Yuille Street and Hastings Road, Frankston. Got symptoms? 23.01.2022 Today we stop to remember the brave men and women who have lost their lives or suffered serving our country in all wars, conflicts and peace operations. 22.01.2022 This #WorldPrematurityDay is an extra special one for Merae Atkin and Chris Mannes. The husband and wife proudly welcomed twins Charli and Cooper into the world on 8 November, who were born at 34 weeks and 2 days. Having twins is amazing, says Merae. It has been beautiful being able to cuddle them both at once.... The proud parents say Charli and Cooper are doing well under the care of our Special Care Nursery (SCN), which has cared for over 1100 babies born prematurely over the past five years. The SCN staff are just beautiful, says Merae. They are such a lovely and supportive bunch of people. Chris adds: They have taken a lot of stress away. The staff and the whole setup at the SCN have been awesome. World Prematurity Day is celebrated to raise awareness of the challenges of preterm birth across the world. With the twins just over a week old, Merae and Chris are excited to soon introduce them to their eldest son, Xavier (6), as the young family becomes five.

Making the transition from the lecture theatre to the fast paced Port Phillip Ward has been a steep learning curve, but one she’s taken in her stride. With a positive attitude, Beth has embraced so much in 2020 - be it managing countless discharges and admissions to learning all there is to know about the ever-changing hospit...al environment. Thank you Beth for caring for our community through Covid-19. #facesofpeninsulahealth

15.01.2022 While we weren’t able to visit their vibrant kiosk much this year, the Frankston Hospital Pink Ladies still certainly made their presence felt. At their Annual General Meeting last month the first of its kind to be held virtually the Pinkies donated $250,000 to Peninsula Health, an extraordinary sum. While 2020 has been a challenging year for fundraising, we are so proud to be able to present Frankston Hospital with a cheque for $250,000, says Pink Ladies President, Car...ole Thwaites (pictured). 15.01.2022 We have installed a new, state-of-the-art MRI scanner, the first of its kind in a Victorian public hospital. The scanner, a SIGNA Artist, will allow us to conduct around 4,000 more scans per year and enhance our patient care. We received delivery of the machine in May this year at Frankston Hospital, and have conducted more than 700 scans on it since it began operating in July.... We are developing world-leading healthcare here in Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula, says our Operations Director for Imaging and Pathology, Andrew Bickell. Our new scanner is faster and has the latest computing power. That means we can conduct quicker scans at a wider scope, and get better diagnostics. Acquisition of the scanner was made possible by our research and innovation partnership with GE Healthcare. Read more: https://www.peninsulahealth.org.au//introducing-peninsula/

15.01.2022 Psychology Week is drawing to a close and one of our Clinical Psychologists is getting behind this year’s campaign to promote the role of psychology in helping people with pain. Luke Parrot of the Persistent Pain Management Service explains one in five people will experience persistent pain at some stage in their life. This is pain that goes on long after the tissues of the body are expected to heal following an injury or that seemingly appears out of nowhere, says Luke. ... Psychologists can assist people living with persistent pain to explore their pain story and to make useful links between difficult life events and protective nervous system responses. To learn more about how psychologists help with persistent pain, read Luke’s full blog at https://www.peninsulahealth.org.au//pain-finding-the-way-/

15.01.2022 : . Credentialled Diabetes Educator Kylie Ball is tackling diabetes one patient at a time. Teaching patients how to self-administer insulin is just one facet of her role. As diabetes educators we provide short and long-term support for people to manage all types of diabetes - from first diagnosis, through different life challenges. These could include work changes, different activity levels, travel, pregnancy, and illness, says Kylie, who’s been with Peninsula Health since 1996. 14.01.2022 We are committed to fostering a community free from family violence across the lifespan. 13.01.2022 As Victoria takes another step towards a COVID-Normal, we are pleased to be able to make some changes to our Visitor Guidelines, effective today. Patients are permitted to have 2 visitors per day. These 2 visitors may be from different households. Children aged 4 and under are not included in the headcount of 2 visitors per day. We encourage families with a loved one in hospital to please talk to each other and plan who will visit each day, within the guidelines of 2 visitors... per day, including the next-of-kin. Radiology has also updated their guidelines so that one support person may attend ultrasound examinations. Please note that the maximum for these appointments is one support person - children are unable to attend ultrasound examinations. Thank you for your understanding as our dedicated healthcare teams do everything they can to provide the best care for your loved ones. Our full visitor guidelines, including opening hours, are available here: https://www.peninsulahealth.org.au/patientvisitor-inform//

12.01.2022 When Naomi Pratt asked the Somers Community Facebook page to help sew scrub caps for our frontline staff back in August, members were quick to respond. Despite hoping for 10-20 caps, the Critical Care Liaison Nurse Practitioner was overwhelmed, receiving more than 400 in six weeks. Caps have been sewn by individuals who are part of craft groups, including the Balnarring Boomerang Bag group and the Lifestyle Village in Hastings group (AKA the ‘Busy Bees’), says Naomi. I’ve... also had donations from local individual sewers Jan, Helen, Judy, Diane, Marnee, Cathie and others. Now, our staff are proudly wearing these colourful creations, bringing dashes of colour to the wards of Frankston and Rosebud Hospitals. I’ve had messages back from a few of the nursing staff who are really appreciative that people have taken the time to make and donate the caps, and have been thinking of our staff over the past few months, says Naomi. Please join us in thanking our dedicated community members for their support and dedication.

12.01.2022 On behalf of our entire community I want to say you are all absolutely magnificent. Peta Murphy MP Federal Member for Dunkley has a message for our staff as we head into the holiday season.

11.01.2022 Our Social Support Group keep finding new ways to thrive in 2020. This includes the amazing efforts of our social workers and allied health assistants in Community Health, to make some 70 calls every week, sometimes spending over an hour of the phone. For Social Support Team Leader Kay Wrangles, pictured below, every call helps every client and carer feel connected and engaged.... With these one on one calls, our clients are opening up more than ever - sharing with us some of those problems they’re managing. On top of this we’ve been sending out a weekly newsletter. Recently, the team also included goodie bags with the newsletter, including homemade biscuits, craft, masks, hand sanitiser and other activities in it. For more information on how our Social Support Group is making a difference, go to https://www.peninsulahealth.org.au//planned-activity-group/

11.01.2022 Comforting patients is something geriatricians are very familiar with. This Christmas, like they've done the previous two years, a group of geriatricians (very ably supported by James, rehab physician, on the guitar) have made it their mission to spread some Christmas cheer at The Mornington Center. A group of us were sitting around, talking about it one day and we thought ‘Why not?’, says Dr Khushu, Head of Unit, Geriatric Medicine. ... There started this little tradition and all of a sudden we were being joined by other nurses, doctors and colleagues all who want to lift the spirits of those who are away from their homes during this festive time. Last week the group of carolling staff who are yet to name their ensemble sang for almost two hours, visiting every ward and office space of The Mornington Centre, with the songs putting smiles on the faces of staff and patient. What do you think they should be called? Watch their performance below or read more here: https://www.peninsulahealth.org.au//its-beginning-to-soun/

04.01.2022 A smoke-free public address system is just one of the many tools Peninsula Health’s developed to deter people from lighting up. It’s been ten years since we adopted our smoke-free policy, leading to the removal of smoking shelters and the banning of smoking at any site. While smoking rates are declining across many parts of Victoria, in some of our local areas, daily smoking rates are more than three times that of the state average, says Health Promotion Practitioner, Rebec...ca Long, who is a member of the Peninsula Health Smoke-Free Working Group. Since we became smoke-free, we’ve taken several steps to encourage compliance promoting the reasons to quit, creating a greater presence of signage along with the introduction of our smoke-free public address system, which provides audible warnings. 03.01.2022 As Victoria continues to move into a COVID-Normal environment, we're reviewing our visitor guidelines in line with social distancing obligations, specific ward considerations and ensuring that we can maintain a safe environment for our staff and patients. We expect that we will be releasing an amended visitor policy in the coming days however, for the meantime the current visitor guidelines will remain. We’d like to take this opportunity to remind all visitors to please revie...w the guidelines before coming into the health service. Please eat before your visit, and don’t bring food with you into hospital. It’s also important that families and friends communicate with each other, and are aware of who their loved one’s two visitors are going to be each day. If you have any questions, please contact customer relations: [email protected].

03.01.2022 We would like to thank our Consumer Representatives and Volunteers for your ongoing support through this very challenging year. 03.01.2022 It is World Occupational Therapy Day and the theme of this OT Week, is about how this profession supports communities to rebuild, recover and reengage. Take Warne Metrowich for example, one of our Mental Health Occupational Therapists at Frankston Community Care Unit (CCU), pictured with client Jeanette. Jeanette has a diagnosis of schizophrenia and states she’s struggled to live on her own for many years, but with Warne’s help, the 57-year-old is now on the verge of regainin...g her independence. The road to recovery has been tough and challenging. Since being at the CCU, I feel like I am a different person and have become more resilient thanks to the staff here, says Jeanette. Warne couldn’t agree more. It’s been fantastic to see Jeanette regain confidence with those everyday activities like cooking, going out for coffees with friends or being able to grocery shop in the community," he says. My role as an OT is to help clients identify goals and work towards achieving those goals. Thank you to all of our Occupational Therapists across the health service for everything you do.
