24.01.2022 Invisible Characters! Students form groups to create a scene in which one or more of the characters are invisible to the audience. Characters act and behave as if this invisible character is visible to them.... The students were very creative in coming up with some interesting invisible characters: Invisible groom at a wedding Invisible murderer at a party Babysitting an invisible out of control child - LOL!

24.01.2022 Freeze Tag using the last sentence: Two students step onto the stage while the rest of the actors sit and wait for the right moment to join in. As with most improv activities, audience participation is essential. The actors on stage will request suggestions for a specific location.... For example, "Stuck inside a giant vending machine" or "In the break room of Santas Workshop". The performers listen to a few of the suggestions. They then quickly select an interesting setting and the scene begins. The goal of the actors is to invent characters and dialogue "off the cuff." They should quickly establish a storyline and conflict. Also, they should be encouraged to move about the stage space, pantomiming whatever they wish to incorporate into the scene. Calling "Freeze!" After the actors have been given enough time to create an interesting situation, the performers sitting in the audience can now participate. All they need to do is shout, "Freeze!" The actors on stage will then stand motionless. Whoever called out "freeze" enters the stage space. He or she takes the place of one of the actors and using the last sentence that was uttered, the new performer changes the scene completely. Another version is to throw out random words for the students to use in their improvised scenes.

24.01.2022 The students at PPA are working on monologues and scripted scenes. They are focusing on developing their characters, voice expression, voice projection, body language and emotions. Monologues: Students choose from a selection of different Monologues and are required to have a full understanding of their character:... - Age and background, - Emotional state and thoughts, - Who is the character speaking with? - inner thoughts? - Tone of voice / expression - Facial expressions - Gestures - Body language Were so proud of all the students efforts, they are all working extremely well together and have created some terrific performances!

24.01.2022 Understanding how to submit a self audition for a TV series: Students were given audition scripts from a TV series. In pairs they rehearsed their scenes and performed in front of the camera. Each pair took it in turns to read the other roles off camera. The individual student being filmed should be looking just off to the side of the camera, as if they are speaking to someone ( rather than straight down the lens ) This was a great exercise for students to understand the processes required when auditioning for TV and Movie roles.

23.01.2022 GHOSTS............ In the spirit of Halloween, students created plays about a mischievous ghost that enjoyed playing tricks on the family that resides in the house. The ghost is invisible to the family, however if the ghost picks up an object, the family can see the object fly through the air. They can also feel the ghosts touch and they must react in a believable way. ... At first the family makes up excuses for what they see and feel. For example: "I think a spider just ran up my back!" or they accuse each other for the strange things happening around them. The aim of this game is for student to create tension and suspense. In the end, the family realise there must be a ghost and they all scream running away from the house - TFO (Totally Freaking Out!!)

22.01.2022 Nuclear Bomb Chicken!!! Characters Exercise: Tell students they are all chickens in a henhouse, and a nuclear bomb is about to drop on the henhouse within 30 seconds, Ask the students to play the chickens as truthfully as possible, then give them the start signal. Any chicken that shows acknowledgement of the incoming bomb, fails the exercise. Chickens have no clue what a bomb is. The goal of the exercise is to show the difference between the reality of the player and the reality of the character. FOOTNOTE: "The story goes that Marlon Brando got it and simply went about laying an egg while the other chickens went in a frenzy." LOL!

22.01.2022 Mystery Bag......dun dun duuuuh.......!! Students formed small groups and they were asked to choose a Mystery bag with each bag containing random items. Students created short plays using all the items in the bag. The students had so much fun creating some very imaginative ideas to incorporate the objects into a performance. ... Bag 1: Walkie talkies, box of chocolates, band aids, notebook, baseball cap Bag 2: UNO cards, coffee plunger, tea candles, dressing gown, bowl Bag 3: Buzz lightyear mask, torch, hot water bottle, plastic spoon, computer mouse.

21.01.2022 The students at PPA are working on scripted scenes and monologues. They are focusing on developing their characters, voice expression, voice projection, body language and emotions. The junior class is focusing on their performance skills for improvised scenes. For example: Freeze Tag:... Two actors will start a scene. At any time during the scene an actor off stage can yell freeze! The actors must immediately freeze in position. The player that yelled freeze must assume the exact position of one of the actors and initiate a whole new scene starting in that position.

20.01.2022 The students at PPA absolutely love this warm up game! It's definitely a favorite!! Zombie: Great game to get to know each other.... All about the room, one player is the zombie; they move, zombie-style, arms stretched out in front of them, towards another player. Before they reach that player, the player needs to yell the name of another player, and the zombie heads towards that player. If the zombie reaches a player before he yells another name, that player becomes the zombie.

19.01.2022 Welcome back to Peninsula Performing Arts!! The students at PPA are devising group performances and each group must try to involve the audience in their short skits. The students have created some very imaginative ways to include the audience. For example: -Freezing the scene and then asking the audience What happens next?... -Choosing audience member to come up on stage to try out the latest new products. -Participating in a Game Show Were all having a blast improvising ideas and figuring out which ones work best.

19.01.2022 SUPERHEROES!! In pairs, students created their own Superhero or Villain using the costume box. Each character required a name and a super power. The characters were all questioned about how they gained their powers. This exercise helps the students to really become absorbed into their characters. Using the whole space, students created different apartments. Each apartment had a family with a problem to solve. In turns, each Superhero entered the apartments and using their po...wers, solved the familys problems. The students were extremely creative when coming up with a Superhero: Teapot Terry - can make anyone sing Im a little teapot Vomit Vicki - can make you vomit Cow girl - can make milk instantly Costume changer - can create a different outfit Love birds - make everyone love each other

19.01.2022 "CUT" Two students start a scene, perhaps based on an audience suggestion. In the middle of the scene, any other student can call `Cut`, and start another one, dragging one or more other players into the scene. All scenes are interrupted this way, and the idea is that they all come together in one story. Cut scenes can be continued later and usually every player sticks to one character.... This game can be played with or without a director with the students creating and controlling the story line. Usually, we decide on a category before the start of the game with some of them being: - Soap series, like Neighbors, Home and Away, - Hospital drama, like E.R. - Cop drama, like Law and Order - Crime series or murder mysteries

17.01.2022 Character Development: The students at PPA created interesting characters using the costume box. Each character was interviewed and asked questions about their life, interests and occupations. This exercise helped the students to really become absorbed into their characters. ... Once students had established their characters they were asked to stay in their characters for the duration of the class. Answering the Door: Two characters: One is in the house, and the other will come to the door. The person knocking on the door needs to give a clear reason as to why they need to enter the home. The goal of this game is for the students to establish their characters before dialogue takes place. This game teaches the value of accepting each others ideas and cooperating with one another.

16.01.2022 This week our students were reacting to statements using facial expressions! Some of the statements were pretty funny as were some of the reactions and expressions!! Check out Jarrod in the 1 min Vid below - he certainly generated a couple of chuckles here at PPA HQ!!!

16.01.2022 Game: He Said, She Said Description: Excellent game to show how Endowment works with 2 players; each player will state the action the other player must perform, followed by their own line. Example:... Player # 1: "I want a divorce" Player # 2: "She said, while grabbing a rolling pin from the kitchen table." At this point player # 1 needs to take a rolling pin. Player # 2 continues with his own line. "Sure Honey" Player # 1: "He said, while turning to the sports page of the paper". Now, it`s quite clear that player # 2 should be paying more attention to his wife than the paper. Player # 1 continues with her own line. "You`re not listening to me" and so on. Students refer to each other as `he` and `she`, and endow each other with the next action to take. This can be quite a funny exercise, especially if you endow your partner to do crazy or not-so-nice things to you.

16.01.2022 Knock, Knock! Whos there?! This game has two students: One is in the house, and the other will come to the door. Each student chooses a character. For example, one student plays a bored housewife and the person coming to the house is a flower delivery person at the wrong house. The goal of this game is for the students to establish their characters before dialogue takes place. ... This game teaches the value of accepting each others ideas and cooperating with one another. The students came up with some great characters: The neighbors tree fell on their house. Jehovahs Witnesses door knock. Little girl selling Girl Scout cookies. Wrong address - party house. Thief hiding from police in a strangers house.

15.01.2022 The senior students at PPA are creating and writing their own monologues. They are focusing on developing their characters, voice expression, voice projection, body language and emotions. The junior class is focusing on their performance skills for improvised scenes. For example: Answering the Door:... 2 students: One is in the house, and the other will come to the door. Each student chooses a character. For example, one student plays a bored housewife and the person coming to the house is a flower delivery person at the wrong house. The goal of this game is for the students to establish their characters before dialogue takes place. This game teaches the value of accepting each others ideas and cooperating with one another. 15.01.2022 Death by Chocolate!! Hmmmm, chocolate - yummy........ An improvisation game in which players have to adapt their scenes to feature a random death... during the performance! How to Play?... Students are grouped into teams of four or more, with each team given the title of a scene which they now have five minutes to prepare for. Their scene must not be longer than ONE minute, and it must have a beginning, middle and end. At some point during the performance, the instructor shouts out DEATH BY...... followed by a random word; e.g. toothpaste, cotton, wool, orange juice, banana split, sofa, bedpost, jelly, guitar and so on. The less dangerous the object, the harder the challenge and the more amusing the performance! The task is to incorporate a death by that object within the scene, before their one minute is up. It must be incorporated naturally as part of the action; someone cannot suddenly keel over dead with no explanation! The scene must then reach a conclusion by the time the teams reach the end of the minute. ONE minute! Talk about thinking on your feet - fast paced game and LOTS of FUN

13.01.2022 Cliffhanger Ending.................... Dont you just hate it when youre watching your favorite TV series and right at the end of an episode youre left hanging; and to find out what happened you have to wait a whole, entire never-ending week - argghhhhhh!! Well this week the students formed small groups and were given the task to create a cliffhanger scene. Their goal was to leave the audience wanting to find out what happens next. The scenes needed to have both tension a...nd suspense. We were so impressed with their performances, they had great focus and came up with some very serious scenes and performances. We cant wait to find out what happens this week..................

13.01.2022 The Alphabet Game!!: 1. Ask two students to take the stage. 2. They must exchange dialogue in which the first word they speak must begin with the next letter of the alphabet, starting with whichever letter is elected and finishing at the letter just before.... 3. The conversation should make sense and propel action in the scene. 4. Its optional to give the students a given situation/scene beforehand. 5. For example: Fishing in the middle of a Lake, the starting letter is D. Actor 1: [D] Do you want to add more bait to your hook? Actor 2: [E] Eel or should I use squid? Actor 1: [F] Forget eel, squid is the way to get the really big fish! Actor 2: [G] Gonna give it a shot, here I go! Actor 1: [H] Holy cow, nice cast! Actor 2: [I] Ive been practicing all summer and so on..........................................

13.01.2022 Peninsula Performing Arts students use speech and body language to play characters in live and filmed performances. They must do a lot of preparation before a performance. They must read scripts and research subject matter, memorise lines, perfect characterisation and hone acting techniques. This week students worked on long form improvisation. 4 students created a family - Mum, Dad and 2 kids. The family were the main focus in this setting. The rest of the class created dif...ferent characters and environments as the family moved from one scene to the next. The family were going on a trip to Hawaii. First they needed to pack their luggage and catch a taxi to the Airport. Students created an Airport scene and the family had to check in and go through security. Finally, after a few problems getting through security, the family were seated on the flight. After a bumpy ride, they arrived in Hawaii and checked into the Hotel... We all had so much fun creating different characters and coming up with interesting scenarios for the family to deal with.

12.01.2022 The students at PPA are rehearsing short plays in order to prepare for a public performance. Some student will focus on including the audience in their plays and others will be creating interesting characters to perform monologues. We had a lot of fun trying to stay focussed with this game:... Purpose: A fun exercise that will help students work on self-control. Procedure: 1. Have each student choose a partner. 2. Instruct the students to stand back to back with their partner. 3. On the count of three, everyone must face their partner, and keep a silent and serious face. 4. Walk around as the inspector. The first person to smile or laugh must sit down. 5. Have the remaining students take new partners, then repeat the exercise again. 6. Keep going until there are only one or two pairs remaining. 7. If at the end no one is breaking down, allow the class to act as hecklers to try and disrupt them.

12.01.2022 Working on Improv skills Doors: Excellent introductory exercise for building environments and working on improvisation skills. 1st student sets the scene by miming a door. As soon as the 2nd student has an idea about where the 1st student might be, the 2nd student steps into the scene and offers a line of dialog, expressing where they are. The 1st student answers the 2nd student and acknowledges their offer of dialogue. ... This ends the scene. The audience should know after these 2 lines of dialog where they are, who they are and what their relationship is to one another. `Doors` can be anything that separates one physical location from another. Players can mime real doors, but also gates, curtains, you name it. We encourage students to try out as many types of `doors` as possible and to use sound to enhance the activity; for e.g. a door in a submarine makes a different kind of noise than an elevator door.

12.01.2022 Theme Park Improv! Students were given a location to create long form improvisation. so we decided to create a Theme Park - Woot, Woot!!... Using the whole space, students used all the chairs and tables to build different rides and activities that you would find in a Theme Park. As a whole group, we travelled around the room, testing out each activity. There were roller coasters, merry-go-rounds, fortune tellers, 3D cinema, adventure maze and the Tower of Terror. We had loads fun and everyone worked so well together. I wonder where well go next week?

11.01.2022 The students at PPA absolutely love this warm up game! Its definitely a favorite!!

11.01.2022 Some new Youtube Vids of our Super, Amazing Students have just dropped! WOOT! WOOT!! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM6-LoX02fDtRLmFVs5uVQg

10.01.2022 Hi Everyone, classes kick off again next Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd February and we cant wait to see all of your happy, smiling faces again!

10.01.2022 Blind Marco Polo: This is the same concept as the water version only with rule variations to make it work well on land. This game is definitely one of the most popular games played by the students at PPA. RULES:... Chose a person to be IT and have them put the mask on. 1. The people who are not IT have to find a place to hide inside the playing area. Once they find their spot they cannot move from it. 2. They can however pivot on their right foot only. 3. The person who is IT (the one with the blindfold) needs to touch the others to catch them. 4. The leader (not IT) can call Marco at any time. All those people who are not IT must immediately answer Polo. This gives IT a better chance to find them. 5. When a person says Polo they can take two and only two steps from their current position. This gives them a chance to escape. 6. When someone is caught they are out and must stand aside. 7. The last person caught gets to be IT next round.

09.01.2022 Character Quirks Our students discussed the importance of creating interesting characters in a performance. Physical Quirks refer to any physical feature that makes a character individualistic. ... Examples: - can only hear out of one ear - drags his or her feet - has a limp - cracks his/her knuckles - can only see out of one eye Vocal Quirks refers to anything which is communicated by word of mouth. Anything about a characters voice, the way he or she speaks, or how or why they speak. They are any qualities about a characters voice that make that character unique. Examples: - has an accent - sometimes speaks about himself/herself in the 3rd person - compulsively interrupts people - laughs to himself/herself at intervals, for no apparent reason -talks about objects as if they were people The students at PPA enjoyed performing improvised scenes whilst creating some very interesting characters.

08.01.2022 Emotional Interview! Students improvised a television chat show - one actor as the presenter of the show and the other as a famous person. The presenter interviews the famous person, asking questions about their life achievements. During the interview someone from the audience yells out an emotion and the actors take on this state of mind. Examples: ... Jealous of each other Condescending - think youre smarter Total lack of confidence You can both smell bacon Fishing for compliments Being a little too nosy Finish each others sentences - wrong One word answers It was very entertaining and hilarious to watch. We were all in fits of laughter!!

07.01.2022 Improvisation Students were given an array of different scenarios to improvise. As a group they all had to work together and throw themselves into the scenes. Each scene lasted for a few minutes before the next improvised scene was given. Students had to think quick using any props or objects they could find to establish the scenario. Example Scenarios:... Gossiping at the hairdresser A rock concert Spectators at a sports event Surgery Baby-sitter with children A fashion show It was so wonderful to see how well the students worked together to create different characters and scenes. So much FUN!

06.01.2022 CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT Students created interesting characters using the costume box. Each character was interviewed and asked questions about their life, interests and occupations. This exercise helped the students to really become absorbed into their characters. THE BUS STOP... We had a bench and row of chairs on stage to create a bus stop. One character starts, entering the bus stop, waiting for the bus or sheltering there. They need to make it obvious who they are. Then in comes the second person, who is a totally different character now also waiting at the same bus stop, they then start to interact. A third person, again a distinct and different character enters the scene, interacting with the first two. This is the cue for the first person to offer a reason to leave the bus stop, whether their bus arrives, they get a lift from a friend, decide to walk or leave injured. The next character will come on after the two left on stage have had some time to interact, and so it continues until all have had a turn. Awesome fun and some really great character development!

06.01.2022 Method Acting Exercise Alone Time: To accurately recreate a characters reality, you have to pretend youre not performing at all. This isnt easy, especially when youre under a bright spotlight and have to exaggerate your voice or behaviors for a big audience. Plenty of drama games coax you into character, but this one actually requires you to be yourself; its the first step in adjusting your public behavior to create a private moment.... Imagine walls between you and your observers (classmates, instructor, friends who volunteer, etc.) Think of something you usually do in private. This can be anything at all, as long as you normally stop doing it when someone walks into a room. Now do it! Dance with abandon, sing off-key, pick your wedgie, etc. By stepping out of your comfort zone, youll be one step closer to stepping outside yourself the next time you perform.

06.01.2022 Freeze Circle - This is a great improvisation game. It is a very popular game we play in class and it keeps everyone on their toes. Its also a great way to get creative and use our imaginations. Firstly, get the group into a circle.... A student enters the circle and begins a solo improvisation. The group then help to come up with a scenario and say freeze at an appropriate moment. Some else from the group gets into the circle and starts a new improvisation, inspired by the other persons frozen pose. Let the improvsiation run for around 30 seconds then say freeze when the students are in an interesting position. A new person from the group then goes into the circle and tags out the one who has been in the longest. They then take up the exact position of the frozen person and start a new scene, inspired by the combined frozen image. We keep going until everyone has had a go or when its time to move on to the next game!!

04.01.2022 The Mystery Bag!!!! Students formed small groups and were asked to choose a Mystery bag. Each bag contained random items and short plays were created using all of the items in the bag. Everyone had a ton of fun creating some very imaginative ideas to incorporate the objects into a performance. ... Bag 1: Walkie talkies, box of chocolates, band aids, notebook, baseball cap! Bag 2: UNO cards, coffee plunger, tea candles, dressing gown, bowl!! Bag 3: Buzz lightyear mask, torch, hot water bottle, plastic spoon, computer mouse!!!

03.01.2022 SMELLY SCENE Incorporating scents in an improvised scene. Students pair up or get into groups of three and using one or more scents they create a short scene. In the scene the actors need to be affected by the smell, or the smell causes a change in the storyline in some way. The scent is a focal point of the scene and can be both good and bad! REPLAY... Two actors play a scene while two others watch the scene, with their ears covered. When the scene is over, the two watching then re-play the scene. Theyll perform the same movements, but the dialogue will be quite different - unless they are master lip readers :-)
