24.01.2022 \\PODDY BANK// We often get asked if we have poddy lambs and calfs that people can raise. Stephen and i are firm believers that animals should ALWAYS stay with there mothers where possible but unfortunately nature sometimes has other plans and ONLY at this stage will we intervene. ... Thats where you come into the picture. Raising poddy babies as a child is such a fond memeory for both of us and to be able to share that joy makes us happy to know we are encouraging youth into the ag industry. If your interested in purchasing or fostering an orphan in need this coming season please get in touch with us. Knowing we have a bank of people who have the time, safe environment and room to grow would ease our minds greatly. Once you drop us a line we will add you to the 'Poddy Bank' and be intouch if/when we need. For more info please drop us a text or comment on this post. Cheers Peninsula Shearers 0490515837

At Peninsula Shearers we aim to provide you with as much information and guidance as we can that will make your shearing exsperance enjoyable and our job run alot smoother. ... 22.01.2022 Hey team, We hope ISO is treating you kindly. We currantly have 5 orphaned lambs that we are bottle feeding and we would love to invite you and your family to join us for a 'live' 8am feeding tomorrow morning. In this live we will introduce you to the lambs, and show you how we make the bottles and feed them. We welcome any questions on this post and i will try my best to answer them tomorrow for you all.

22.01.2022 This year we are aiming to stay mornington peninsula based all year round. With the end of the 2020 shearing season in site on the peninsula- normally we would be getting ready to travel to S.A and shear on the stations. How ever this year we are starting a second business called Peninsula Pastures. We hope that this will carry us through our off season and we can allow our roots to remain in home soil and get a bit deeper. ... With staying home based this year we are looking for activities in our community that will allow us to share our passion, knowledge and stories with you all. In 2021 we would like to arrange times to come to your school, workplace, retirement home, ect and help share the joy that is the shearing industry. We will do a shearing demo, possibly bring in some lambs (depending on time of year) and answer any questions you have regarding our industry, including how we got involved and where to start Stephen and I would love to help retired farmers and future farmers smile. If this is something that interests you please feel free to get in touch. Peninsula Shearers. 0490515837

19.01.2022 \\\ Grass Tetany /// Also known as -the staggers and -hypomagnesaemia can effect sheep, goats, alpacas, horses and cattle. ... WHAT CAUSES IT? Grass tetany is caused when sheep eat fast growing grass. Grass in autumn/ spring tends to grow alot faster then other season and when growing so fast the grass can lack certain minerals and compounds- the biggest one being magnesium. It is the low levels of magnesium in the blood of the animal that causes grass tetany. WHATS THE SYMPTOMS? Signs of grass tetany include; staggers, the animal appears to be acting 'drunk' and restless. CAN I AVOID IT? Grass tetnay can be avoided by supplementing feed with things such as mineral blocks that contain magnesium, pallets or nuts that are tailored to the animal (e.g. sheep or cow) you can not feed cow pallets to a sheep or visa versa (unless stated on bag eg - hobby mix). The supplements will assist in boosting the animals mineral levels and should assist in avoiding getting grass tetany. HOW DO I TREAT ANIMALS WITH GRASS TETANY? If you have an animal that is showing symptoms of grass tetany a magnesium and calcium solution can be administerd via injection. If you are unable to get this we suggest you get your hands on the above mentioned supplements as fast as possible and go from there. Prevention is always better then cure. Stephen and myself are not vets and this information is shared with the intent to help those in need and gain better understanding of there stock. This is our own personal information that is gained from years of hands on experience. For more information, booking and enquiries. 11.01.2022 \\\ KEEPING YOUR ANIMALS COOL // With the extremely hot weather we are having at the moment we thought it was important we share some tips to help keep you and your animals comfortable. Before an extremely hot day make sure your animals will have access to plenty of shade and water. Please do not try and move your animals in the peak of the heat if you feel they would be more comfortable in a different paddock halfway through the day simply leave the gate open and let them m...ake there own way- applying pressure is not advised at all. Make sure they have access to plenty of shade - all day, not just in the peak sun. Trees, shrubs, buildings, structural shadows provide great shade and you will notice your animals moving from one to the other as they need be. - if you feel your fields lack shade you can always put up a make shift shade cloth for them.. Don't be surprised if your animals choose to sit under a tree over there shelter box- outside has better ventilation. Make sure they have access to plenty of water- If the dam or trough is on the other end of the paddock away from the shade you can put a few buckets of water in the shade near where your flock will be hanging out. Cows, horses, poultry and dogs will feel the heat alot more than sheep and goats and all of this advice is important to all live stock (including humans). You may see your animals holding there mouth open and panting this is how they regulate there body temperature and given that all above advice is followed it's nothing to panic about. Sheep and goats are extremely hearty and durable animals who are very well equiped to deal with eextreme weather. Wool is an amazing insulator that regulates the animals body temperature to stay at a stable and comfortable level regardless the outside weather factors. Your sheep and goats will pant with both there wool on or off. With total fire bans in place over the country tomorrow and warnings like black Saturday we strongly advise you to discuss with loved ones your fire safety plans and what will happen in the event of an evacuation. This may seem extreme but is highly important that everyone in your family be on the same page as to what will happen with your home, stock and possessions. Please stay safe, be prepared and have a plan in place. @Peninsula Shearers Back on the phone and tools 4/1/20 0490515837

10.01.2022 Hey team, Today we have had 5 phone calls alone about 'sad sheep'. Sheep that are weak, falling over, not interested in food and generally off colour and not themselves. 05.01.2022 \ \ \ RAMS / / / Let us talk about the 'man' in your girls' life. ... I want to start with a few questions.. 1) Where did your ram come from? Does your ram come from someone who knows what they are on about? There is a lot that goes into breeding livestock. This may come as a bit of a surprise you, but it doesn't all chase back to the ram. The person who you purchase your ram off should ideally have a background in the sheep industry. E.g. breeder, large-scale farmer, shearer. Purchasing your ram off someone who understands the industry will automatically get you a better return when selling or processing your lambs. 2) Is your ram related to other sheep on the farm? If your ram was born and bred on your property and the original bloodline remains for him to re-join, you are just asking for issues. There is a great saying that goes, "its a fine line between line breeding and inbreeding" and unless you know what you are doing and what to look for, its a line I suggest you don't dance on. For the best return on your lambs and to do correct by your flock, I suggest if your ram was bred on your property, you get rid of him and get new blood in. Inbreeding is unfair and avoidable. Your lambs become runty and never have the ability to reach potential. 3) Is your ram what he is said to be? Purchasing your ram from a reputable member of the industry should mean that you are getting what you're promised. (If in doubt we do recommend asking around). A good ram should be a pure breed or have no more than one cross in it. If a pure breed it should be of true character to its kind (e.g. black Suffolk to have no black markings through the body and clear colour change around head and legs. Dorpers to FULLY shed) if you're purchasing a cross-ram, you want it to have the best qualities of the two breeds represented. You should also take into consideration the breeding of your ewes and what will enhance their genetics. 4) Is 'he' Ram worthy? Just because he has balls doesn't mean he is entitled to use them. A good breeding ram has even meat coverage. He has nice even front shoulders and is evenly balanced over the rump. He ideally has black toes, an even jawline and his testis are even in shape size and free from fluid and bumps. Your friend of a friend may have a ram you can borrow and that's great- We just hope this info may assist you in making better choices for the welfare of your future lambs- as your future lambs are the future of our sheep industry. 04.01.2022 A massive Happy Birthday to my Husband Stephen today. Everyday is an adventure with you

04.01.2022 Good morning to all our wonderful clients and followers, We hope you are all happy and traveling as best as possible in these crazy times. As it stands, Stephen and I have made a heavy hearted decision not to travel to Ireland for the winter period this year. Though worldwide shearing is considered essential we have underlying concerns of not being able to get back into Australia come July/August. The thought of leaving all our clients in the lurch for there shearing is to ...distressing and we would rather not take the risk. We have the ability to remain working in the sheds over this period and are thankful for our industry and guidelines its following to keep us all safe. In the meantime we are home and will be running as normal (with a few safety practises in place). Coming into winter we do reccomend crutching, drenching and a toe trim to keep your animals happy and healthy over the wet coming months. We are home, our phone is on and we are in clear reception and looking forward to hearing from you. We also still have a few longnecks and woolys forsale For bookings and enquires Please call the team Peninsula Shearers 0490515837

28.12.2021 I had the absolute pleasure of shearing these two the other week. I can proudly tick another breed off my shearing list.

22.12.2021 This year our shearing services will look a little different. You will just be dealing with me, aren't you lucky! Yes everything is ok, thank you for your concerns. We are trying to get our second business up and running and during this time, Stephen will need to focus his energy on Peninsula Pastures ... What does this mean for our shearing clients? Great question, obviously I am only one person and whilst I will work really hard to fit you all in, return your calls, and shear your sheep I am limited to 24 hours in a day. Whilst service may be slower, I promise it will not slip and your appointments will continue to be held to our high standards. In saying this we understand that some of you will not wish to wait, have holidays booked or other deadlines you need to meet and if you wish to go elsewhere - no hard feelings. Here are a few things that will make the process easier for all parties, ensuring the best service possible for you and your sheep. - Your patience while waiting to hear from me to book an appointment. - Be organised for your appointment. Ensure all animals are penned and ready prior to me getting there. I pride myself on my communication and I wish to be as transparent with you all as possible regarding the changes to our services. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you all for your business, past and present. Your ongoing support means the world to us, alongside your understanding of our change in operations. Cheers Emily & Stephen Peninsula Shearers
