25.01.2022 Here is the story of Peninsula Snapper Challenge Open runner up & Spotters Top 5 winner, Jennifer & her epic fish. "Me & my friends were just chatting on the boat waiting for a rod to buckle and not expecting anything one of the rods which I’d just put on a chunk of travelly shot off like a steam train. The sound of the reel was amazing, it took a good 5-6 mins to get the fish in the boat. The fish ran about 5 times and you could just feel the power of the head shakes that th...is was going to be a big fish. Scared to lose the fish too, had to play around with the drag on the reel and really let the fish tire itself out. When we saw colour my heart was racing and my partner helped net the beast. We got it in the boat and I was exhausted had to catch my breath. It was one amazing fight and is now my personal best catch for snapper. The boys wanted to take photo with the fish as it was so beautiful, I was over exhausted and only managed to just take one photo of two snapper later on." 25.01.2022 Another online tool that the Peninsula Snapper Challenge finds useful is the Point Nepean wave data at www.vicports.vic.gov.au. Out the back of Sorrento back beach is a series of buoys that measure the swell size in real time. Over the years we have learned that when the significant wave height is less than 1 metre then it is safe to dive inshore for crays & abalone and offshore gummy fishing is still pleasant when the significant swell is around 2 metres but don't forget to factor in the wind strength & direction to keep the crew safe on the water.

08.01.2022 Next in the Peninsula Snapper Challenge handy apps suggestion is the nautical charts Navionics app. We find it great to plan trips where we can measure distance to travel, depths, channels & markers, you can see it's 13 nm from Morno to St Leonards whiting. Zoom it in to see whiting banks & drop offs, offshore gummy reefs and the like. Great app for vaguely explaining to others where you were fishing without giving away your secret honey hole, just leave it zoomed out & point.

07.01.2022 Whilst the Peninsula Snapper Challenge was on our garfish crusade we were in awe of the marine life between Morno & Mt Eliza. We saw the bay alive with seals, dolphins, penguins & gannets bombing on the prolific bait in the area. Check out the bait on our sounder, perhaps with some imagination or a few Saturday night cocktails was it just one giant goldfish feeding on the bottom.
