21.01.2022 Its Friday the 13th!!! Did you know? In the ancient world, Egyptians worshiped a cat goddess named Bast, or Bastet. ... As both the goddess of protection and cats, she was often depicted as a black cat. . Also, giving a black cat to a bride in the English Midlands is considered good luck. Sailors and fisherman's wives historically have revered black cats. If sailors needed a cat on their ship to hunt mice, they preferred it to be black, for good luck. The wives would own black cats in hopes that it would bring good luck for their husbands while they were away. In honour of these superstition causing moggies, show us your black cats!

20.01.2022 Did you know the five second rule not only applies if you drop your food, it also applies for whether or not the bitumen or footpath is too hot to walk your dog on! With such awesome walking tracks and views to take in on the Peninsula and so many of our cafes, pubs, and restaurants now dog friendly its an important reminder to make sure youre walking your dog on the grass and checking the temperature on the paths youre on when taking them out and about. Place your hand on th...e pathway for five seconds if its too hot for your hand its too hots for their paws! #dogfriendly #VetsCare #hotpaws #toohot #qldsummer #peninsulapet

12.01.2022 Not only are they warty and gross but with our current weather conditions they are increasing in numbers and cases we have been seeing!!! Cane Toads are unfortunately a common cause of poisoning in our pets. The Toad exudes a milky white toxin from poison glands behind the eyes which they squeeze onto the surface of the skin when they are under threat. The dog or cat then mouths the Toad, thus getting the poison in their mouth. The signs of Toad poisoning are: profuse salivat...ion/frothing from the mouth, vomiting may occur especially in cats. Cats also show hindquarter weakness and fixed trance like stare. With dogs it usually leads to seizures and convulsions. These convulsions are usually fatal unless you seek urgent veterinary attention. The poison can also affect the heart of the dog or cat, causing immediate cardiac arrest. What to do if you have seen your pet mouth a toad or know they may have been playing with one and they have started to salivate, is to wash their mouth out using a very wet cloth and lots of water. The poison is very sticky so using the cloth as well to wipe the mouth out and gums is very important. Keep washing the mouth for a good 10-15 minutes. Usually if you have gotten to the pet straight away and have done all the above, your pet should be okay, but if they start to show any signs listed above then seek veterinary attention straight away. Toads are a nocturnal menace, so to prevent the problem it is probably best to keep your dog on lead to take to the toilet at night. Other suggestions are to use a mesh screen around the outside of your fence. The screen should be buried at least 4 inches into the ground and be a least 20 inches above the ground to stop them from coming into the yard. Or you can try trapping them by placing a 5 gallon bucket in the ground near a light. The toad then gets attracted to the bugs that fly around the light and they will fall into the bucket and wont be able to get out. Cover swimming pools and keep ground lights off as much as possible. If you have any queries about Cane Toads then please don’t hesitate to call us here at Peninsula Veterinary Surgery on: 3284 5133.
