Phillip Island's Little Penguins have begun pairing up with their breeding partners and readying their burrows for... egg-laying and chick-rearing. We've seen lots of early breeding behaviours lately which is a great sign that this year’s breeding season will be a successful one! 23.01.2022 After respecting lock down restrictions, these two little penguins headed off to sea around 4/5am this morning. Look carefully for their prints! They walk directly from burrow sites to the water (and when it’s dark) to minimize chances of being snatched up by predators!

23.01.2022 Welcome to the team Leo! We’re thrilled to have an experienced (and entertaining!) penguin tour guide join our team. Leo conducted penguin tours in Tasmania (little penguins) and couldn’t get enough of the adorable birds, so here he is!

22.01.2022 Some grubby penguins spotted today during the burrow check, but they don’t seem to mind! We have had 25 chicks fledge so far this breeding season and still more in their burrows growing rapidly! Last year we had approx. 19 penguin chicks fledge, and that was the total at the end of January.

15.01.2022 CHICKS UPDATE as of today: 21 have successfully left the colony(fledged), 4 have died, 9 chicks currently in burrows, 6 of those 9 chicks belong to second timer parents for this breeding season (an excellent sign!). We are expecting more chicks this breeding season as well.

05.01.2022 Tonight’s tour ended with a shooting star and a penguin waddling ahead of us along a platform. One of the sweetest sights!

04.01.2022 Last night’s tour certainly was an adventure tour! First we saw a tiger snake halfway into a burrow (sadly we have lost another chick to this snake), then we kept walking and found this tree protruding the pathway! Adventure time: option 1 turn back and face deadly snake OR option 2 climb under fallen tree. We did see penguins, but they may not have been the most memorable part of this tour!
