The Carols on the Coast is brought to you through the funds generated by the Penneshaw Community Business Centre...which is a COMMUNITY OWNED BUSINESS. The profits of this business go directly back into the community...so make sure to show your support!

21.01.2022 The next and final University of South Australia Zoom workshop will take place at 5 pm Wednesday 12 August (meeting ID 934-1153-1891, password 0123) and will be presented by Dr. Sylvia Zukowski and Dr. Nick Whiterod (aquatic ecologists, Aquasave Consultants - Nature Glenelg Trust). They will discuss the Freshwater Fish of Kangaroo Island, their biology, and their conservation. They both have 20 years of experience in natural resource management, ecological freshwater research, and community engagement. Everyone is welcome to this free workshop.

19.01.2022 Next Uni SA Zoom Workshop: Wednesday 29 July at 5 pm for a free workshop on THE PYGMY-POSSUMS OF KANGAROO ISLAND. Zoom meeting ID 958 5391 5604, password 0123. https://unisa.zoom.us/j/95853915604 Topa Petit will discuss the identification and ecology of KI’s pygmy-possums, information based in part on research conducted on the Yorke Peninsula and presented last year at the Brewery’s pygmy-possum night. Topa is Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology at the University of South Australia. She has particular interests in pollination biology, and bat and pygmy-possum ecology. She has a four-year undergraduate degree in agriculture, a PhD in biology, a Masters of Business Administration, and thirty years of experience managing and researching wildlife and plants in the USA, Caribbean, Fiji, and Australia (although she is only 24).

This Award recognises our young people's achievements in areas such as community work, sport, education, science, culture, the arts and the environment. Consideration will be given to a young person who has demonstrated leadership, dedication and significant personal accomplishment or active involvement in their Community.... Who is eligible for the Young Achiever of the Year Awards? 1. All young people aged between 12-25 years as of 27 July 2020. 2. Nominees need to be a resident of Kangaroo Island. 3. Groups are eligible all members need to be acknowledged. 4. Members of Council, or staff, are not eligible to receive awards for achievement associated with their Council responsibilities. However other achievements by Elected Members or Council staff and their families can be recognised in the same way as any other member of the Community. 5. 15.01.2022 Penneshaw Progress Association is donating a combination of roses for creating a massed floral display in the garden bed at Lloyd Collins Reserve. These have been carefully nurtured by Ross Roses from rootstock into pots and are now ready for collection and transplanting. Is there anybody travelling to Kangaroo Island in the next week or so with a vehicle large enough to hold 36 rose plants in cartons (large car, station wagon, van) who can collect these from Ross Roses in Willunga for delivery to the Council depot in Penneshaw? 14.01.2022 Remembrance Day was extremely breezy at Penneshaw but the Penneshaw Campus again did the community proud with the Remembrance Day service, attended by ex-servicemen and family members. Wreaths were laid and The Last Post performed by Desiree Jurgs prior to the minute of silence being observed.

Do you want to change jobs? Do you simply want a strong CV for tenders, grant applications, or personal satisfaction? This workshop is for you. Associate Professor Topa Petit will mention cover letters and give you tips for a good CV. You will then work in pairs to edit your CV (bring a hard copy). The workshop will use environmental examples, but everyone should benefit, no matter what their discipline or background may be. One can never attend too many CV workshops! 14.01.2022 Thursday 15 October from 8:45 am to 1 pm at Kangaroo Island Dance School (13 Drew St, Kingscote), a free UniSA workshop titled Reactivating Tourism on Kangaroo Island: the New Face of Ecotourism aims to share the latest ecotourism research findings and examine strategies for ecotourism operators to support long-term business sustainability on the island. The workshop is open to tourism operators or leaders, and anyone concerned with ecotourism. Presenter Dr Higgins-Desbioll...es, a highly experienced and cited Tourism Management researcher and lecturer in UniSA’s Business Unit, is volunteering her time for this project because she is passionate about the power of meaningful ecotourism as a social force and sustainable business model. Similarly, Associate Professor Weber is keen to share her expertise in human dimensions of environmental management and interpretation to improve prospects for the ecotourism community. The workshop is a unique opportunity to be exposed to the latest research with top ecotourism and interpretation experts in the country, and to rethink ecotourism for our island. 07.01.2022 Another project to celebrate! The construction of the new verandah over the oval side of Penneshaw Town Hall is complete. It just needs a couple of coats of paint and a final clean up. Great to see this area becoming more useful. Once again...thanks to the funds from you supporting your COMMUNITY OWNED PCBC projects like these come to life through the PPA securing fund matching grants to get things done!

07.01.2022 SA Water are currently in the planning and design phase of Kangaroo Island’s new desalination plant project. The project aims to build a new desalination plant in the vicinity of the existing plant at Penneshaw which will improve drinking water security for the residents and visitors of Kangaroo Island and to support the tourism and agriculture industries. Water produced from the new plant will supplement the existing Penneshaw facility and the Middle River Reservoir, supplyi...ng the Island through a connected drinking water network. A new pipeline, connecting the new desalination plant to the Middle River-Kingscote network, will have capacity to service residents in Baudin Beach, Island Beach, Sapphiretown and American River. SA Water are looking to initiate engagement with the Penneshaw community to enable a greater understanding of the project including community benefits and project objectives. 06.01.2022 A little while ago the Rotary Club of Glenelg approached Kangaroo Island residents, seeking expressions of interest with setting up a Satellite group on Kangaro...o Island to work with the Glenelg club to give Kangaroo Island a Rotary presence. Following these meetings Expression of Interest forms were left here on Kangaroo Island with the view of finding 9 people that would be willing to join the group. Unfortunately only 8 registrations have be received to date. The void is in the Penneshaw area. Is there anyone out there that would like to join. 04.01.2022 There will be guest appearances at Penneshaw Markets this week. Advocacy for Disability is a not for profit organisation providing advocacy to resolve perso...nal issues in areas such as accommodation, education, employment, NDIS and problems with other services as well as advocacy support to participate in the Disability Royal Commission. They will also have information and advice from a sister organisation, Catalyst, who provide information for seniors on: housing and low cost rental accommodation, residential aged care, concessions and benefits, independent living and home support, and retirement housing. The stall will have some info bags and freebies! Also, Karta Harvest Exchange will be setting up as an addition to their regular monthly meeting. Karta Harvest Exchange is a local social network to share surplus garden produce, seedlings, cuttings, flowers or local experience and advice. Look out for the Karta banner by the scoreboard between 10 - 11 a.m.

02.01.2022 Joan Gibbs will present the next UniSA workshop, which is on the bush foods of Kangaroo Island. Joan is a botanist and plant ecophysiologist with special interests in restoration ecology and Traditional Ecological Knowledge. The workshop will introduce us to some interesting plants of KI that not only have a role to play in natural ecosystems, but also have served as traditional foods for humans. 02.01.2022 Kangaroo Island Council advises that it is developing a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan (DAIP) and is seeking community input. The purpose of the DAIP is to provide an integrated, whole of Council approach to strengthen inclusion and access for all. All councils must publish a DAIP by 31 October 2020 to comply with the SA Disability Inclusion Act 2018. A high level first draft is acceptable to meet this deadline, which can be expanded on in the following months.... The DAIP will be developed in consultation with key stakeholders, staff, Elected Members and our community to ensure all residents, ratepayers, and visitors have equal access to facilities, services, information and employment opportunities. The first stage of the consultation will be a community workshop. The aim of the workshop will be to gain insights from a broad cross section of the community. We are particularly keen to hear from key stakeholders, so we can plan Council’s efforts around the following State Disability Plan themes: Inclusive communities for all Leadership and collaboration Accessible communities Employment Council’s DAIP must also: Describe the measures Council intends to put in place to ensure that people with disability can access the mainstream supports and services provided by or on behalf of the Council; Explain how the Council proposes to give effect to the objects and principles set out in the SA Disability Inclusion Act 2018; Have consistency with the State Disability Inclusion Plan 2019-2023; Include other provisions as set out in the DAIP Guidelines and the Disability Inclusion Regulations (2019).
