01.01.2022 This week, we celebrate Meg Melvilles career at Penrhos as she retires from her role as sixth Principal. In answering her profile questions, Meg reminds us that she first started at the College as a teacher of economics in 1979; since then, Meg has inspired generations of young girls in becoming extraordinary women, and we thank her most sincerely today for her outstanding commitment to girls education in WA across the last 30 years. #TeacherTuesday #MEGXIT 1. How long have... you worked at Penrhos College? In total, 30 years - but in two blocks: 1979 to 1987, and 1997 to 2020. 2. What is your current role and what other roles have you held at Penrhos? I am currently Principal and have also held roles as teacher of Economics, Head of Department, Head of Year and Head of Senior School - all at Penrhos. How lucky I have been, to have been given so many opportunities at the school that I love! 3. When did you first know you wanted to work in education and why? When I was five years old. I always wanted to be a teacher. I loved writing on the blackboard with chalk at kindergarten. 4. What are the most significant changes in education that you have observed over the decades? I have witnessed huge changes since I began teaching in 1979. Probably the most significant would be in the empowerment of girls as they become young women, so that they can become agents of change to make our world a better place. Technology has been transformative in this, too. 5. Do you have any favourite stories/experiences from your time working at Penrhos? So many, I really dont know where to start! Probably one of the most memorable was one of our Year 2s telling her mum that she couldnt remember if I had been at Penrhos for 40 or 400 years! 6. Do you have a favourite quote? There is more to us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less. Kurt Hahn. 7. What is your proudest career achievement? Being appointed to the role of Principal of Penrhos College - the dream role! I remember breaking the exciting news to my mum, who told me how pleased she was, saying, you worked far too hard as the Head of Senior School! 8. What was your greatest learning in your role as Principal of Penrhos College? The role of Principal has given me huge opportunity for personal and professional growth. Perhaps the greatest learning has come from the need to be patient. To listen to people and to really try to understand where they are coming from, so that we can find the way forward.
