20.01.2022 HAPPENING NOW: It's the end of an era. After 130 years of quarrying, the last truck load of sand and gravel has been prepared to leave the Penrith Lakes Scheme... site. Since the 1880s, the site has delivered more than 160 million tonnes of sand and gravel to the construction industry. Rehabilitation on the 2000 hectare site is expected to be completed by October 31.

07.01.2022 21 September marked an end of 130 years of quarrying history at Castlereagh. The quarry has been a mainstay of the Penrith economy for many decades, employing hundreds of local people and supplying markets all over metropolitan Sydney. Some quarry veterans spent their entire working lives on the site, and in some cases more than one generation in the same family did the same.
