25.01.2022 STAFF PICK OF THE WEEK - The Ghost Map : The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic, by Steven Johnson, read by Alan Sklar. I really enjoyed this book - I found the narrator had a very pleasant voice, and the author does an excellent job of balancing both sides of the situation: the larger problem of sanitation in cities, and the gripping and very human story of several people doing their best to track an infection all the way back to ‘patient zero’ in a bustling urban ...city. There is also a remarkable cast of characters, from a brilliant scientist with a bad habit of testing things on himself, a local reverend who decides to join the investigation when all of his parishioners start falling ill, and the Board of Health who are convinced that bad smells are the root cause of all diseases. This book does involve quite a lot of discussion of the absolute nightmare that was sanitation in Victorian London, but if you aren’t squeamish I definitely recommend it! Penrith City Library has The Ghost Map available as an audiobook via Overdrive, accessible through our website or the Libby app. Stephanie, Library Assistant #saffpick #stevenjohnson #goodreads

24.01.2022 STAFF PICK OF THE WEEK: An American Marriage by Tayari Jones Celestial and Roy are newly married professionals with a bright future when Roy is convicted of a crime he did not commit. The book explores the ways we are bound to one another and what, if any, are the limits of those bonds. The main characters are messy, complicated and flawed. This story is driven by the characters rather than the plot. The tone is moving and sombre. It is a story about love and family with no... villains or heroes and no neat bow to tie it off. 18.01.2022 Flashback Friday wonders who remembers the Baby Health Centre in Tindale Street. Baby Health Centres were part of a suite of services provided to improve community health post war. While this is not the first baby health centre building in Penrith, the Country Women’s Association (CWA) should be justly proud of their years of agitation which culminated in the opening of the first baby health centre in 1938. 14.01.2022 STAFF PICK OF THE WEEK: The Lost Girls of Paris, by Pam Jenoff This book was very enjoyable and kept me intrigued from start to finish. It was very interesting, being inspired by true events. Besides being very well written and suspenseful, the book shows heroic courage and friendship of woman doing remarkable times during the war. Also showing the hard circumstances of war and incredible bravery. The book is based on events throughout 1946, during the war. It follows a l...ady named Grace Healey who finds an abandoned suitcase on her way to work, containing a dozen photographs of different women. Grace takes the suitcase and intrigued and curious sets on a path to discover the mystery of who owns the suitcase and who these woman are in the photos. 10.01.2022 This week, we’re recognising the incredible May Alphonsus Boland, nurse and Matron. May worked at the Nepean (District) Hospital between 1929 and 1941. She was born at Upper Manilla, NSW, in 1893, and was one of 10 children. She started work as a probationary nurse at Manilla Hospital in 1911 and by 1915 had moved to the Coast Hospital (Prince Henry Hospital), NSW, where she worked for six years. May then moved to Victoria to work as a Matron where she caught Spanish Influenz...a while nursing during the pandemic. In 1923, May moved to Queensland as Matron of Bundaberg Hospital with a staff of 40. In 1924, she sued James Burke Clark, the President of the Hospital Committee, for assault. She withdrew her complaint after Clark apologised, but was dismissed by the Hospital Board less than a year later. There was considerable public indignation about her treatment. She did leave with excellent references. Boland became Matron at Nepean District Hospital in late 1929. She managed and supervised staff and was heavily involved in community fundraising, helping to organise events such as the Hospital Comfort Club’s garden party, the Mad Hatters’ Ball and the Annual Ball with the Penrith Ladies Auxiliary. In 1931, May Boland was involved in a court enquiry which investigated the financial and administrative management of the hospital. Dr. I. M. Barrow, who attended patients at the hospital, said that Matron Boland was the best matron the hospital had ever had and that she conducted the hospital in a very efficient manner. By 1941, May Boland had resigned, citing that she could not transform an out-of-date building (hospital) into something modern. May Boland was given a huge farewell at Tattersall’s Hotel. She continued to work as a Matron in other hospitals and died at 60 years of age. Photo: The Truth 26 July 1931 p13 #flashbackfriday #nurse #penrithcitylibrary

03.01.2022 As international Year of the Midwife and Nurse draws to a close Flashback Friday recognises the inspirational Adelaide Maud Kellett. Adelaide Kellett was born in 1873 in Raglan, NSW but moved to Penrith where she attended Penrith Superior Public School. After gaining her nursing certificate in 1901, she joined the Australian Army Nursing Service in 1908 and then the Australian Imperial forces (AIF) in September 1914. After serving on the Euripides, she was appointed to the ...hospital ship Gascon which was used to transport wounded soldiers from Gallipoli to Lemnos in Greece. In her description of her time aboard the Gascon she wrote I feared from the terrible firing especially around 3am, there would not be a single soul alive and was greatly relieved and surprised in the morning when the barges arrived to find so few wounded. Over the next few years she was appointed Matron at various military hospitals in Europe and the UK and in 1917 was awarded the Royal Red Cross Medal for her special devotion in nursing the sick and wounded. Kellett was also mentioned in despatches in 1916 and 1919 and was appointed a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) Military Division . On her return to Australia she was appointed Matron of No 4 Australian General Hospital Randwick. In 1937 she was awarded the Florence Nightingale Medal by the international Red Cross Society Geneva (the third Australian recipient to have this honour at the time). Adelaide Kellett continued to work until June 1944 when she retired as Matron of Sydney Hospital after 23 years in the position. She died in 1945 and her name is included on the Kellett family memorial at St Stephens Anglican Church, Penrith.
