23.01.2022 MEET KENNY THE ROCK STAR CHEMO PATIENT! Kenny is a 7-year-old Kelpie who was diagnosed with gastrointestinal lymphoma affecting his large intestine. This is a form of cancer that is not curable in dogs, however chemotherapy is an effective treatment to manage the condition and to improve quality of life. Kenny was referred to our specialist medicine team in January 2020 for chemotherapy to treat the cancer. Kenny received a 19-week course of chemotherapy. He was a little nerv...ous about all the fuss, but was an absolute rock star during all his treatments and has generated quite a fan club at the clinic! It has been 2 months since Kenny finished his chemotherapy and he visited the medicine team last week for a check-up. Dr. Abigail and Dr. Susie performed an abdominal ultrasound and a thorough examination which revealed no evidence of disease which means that Kenny is in remission! While the medicine team will miss Kenny's regular visits to our clinic, we are so happy with his great response to treatment.

13.01.2022 DEXTER IS ONE VERY LUCKY PUPPY This adorable, but very cheeky, Labradoodle puppy is Dexter. When Dexter was 9 weeks old, he had an altercation with a doggy friend over food. Unfortunately, during the scuffle Dexter was bitten on the head, so his owners rushed him bruised and sore to the local emergency centre. The next day Dexter was referred to our surgery service for assessment. A CT scan revealed the full extent of the damage - the bite wound had fractured Dexter’s sku...ll all the way through his frontal bone which protects the brain. Amazingly, despite having sustained significant trauma to his skull, Dexter was able to walk, eat, and wag his tail enthusiastically. Dexter was assessed by the surgical team, Dr. Arthur and Dr. Chris, who decided that repairing the bone would only risk increasing the pressure inside his skull and potentially cause brain damage. Surgery was not performed - Dexter was sent home with pain relief and orders of strict rest for 6 weeks in the care of his loving family. This was no easy task as Dexter is a typical cheeky puppy full of energy and he did not like being in confinement one bit! Dexter is a very lucky puppy. His owners report that he has made a full recovery and he is being a little terror chewing anything he can get his paws on!

04.01.2022 FLOPPY EARS FIXED! This is Saint, a 4-month-old German Shepherd, who presented to our emergency service when his mum noticed that he had difficulty swallowing. Saint was referred to our medicine department for investigation of neurological disease. On closer examination, Saint’s symptoms of lockjaw, inability to swallow and folded ears all pointed to a diagnosis of tetanus. Tetanus is caused by a toxin which affects the nerves and results in rigidity (stiffness) of the li...mbs and muscles. After a few days of hospitalisation and assisted feeding, along with antibiotics and horse strength tetanus antitoxin, Saint is symptom free and his beautiful floppy ears now stand up!
