24.01.2022 A common quesiton from first time patients is "Ive been taking xyz supplement for a while now, should I keep taking it?". If youve allowed me to walk with you on your healing journey for any length of time, youll know Im not a huge fan of supplements; unless a blood test shows you need it, or there is an obvious requirement. But when youre on your own and searching for answers to why you are feeling so crappy, it is easy to get hopeful over this supplement or the next. A...nd then to buy them. And take them, lots of them. Sometimes, those supplements are good, sometimes they are probably better left alone. Sometimes, they are just plain dangerous. Not only is maintaining a swag of supplements expensive, they may just be doing nothing to help, or worse yet providing harm! Remember that Dr Google or that new lady you met down at the Whistling Kite probably doesnt know your whole story, nor have they likely seen your blood results If you have been taking a nutritional supplement for several months (Im thinking things like iron, a B supplement, multi-vitamins, etc. ) and you either havent had a blood test that showed you needed that supplement or it wasnt prescribed by a health professional, better to get yourself checked out.

24.01.2022 There are two types of people who lay on the table - those who just cant wait for you to come back and take the needles out, and the more common acunapper. Acupnappers just dont want the session to end! These are the common acunapper responses when I come in to take needles out: - "......." (silence, they are asleep) - ".....*snore snort*...oh, youre back" -"..noooo.....already?"... -"...just five more minutes?" -"......." (silence, not asleep, wont open eyes, dont want it to end) Acunappers: you make my day

24.01.2022 Next week is Sleep Awareness week - if you suffer from poor quality sleep you know just how important sleep is. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are amazing for helping with sleep! TCM has a very different framework for considering sleepless nights... For example:... light sleeps could mean you are Blood deficient waking between 1 and 3am might mean your TCM Liver needs calming down waking constantly through the night for a wee could be your TCM Kidneys need tonifying crazy dreams may mean your Shen is on the loose cant get to sleep because your mind wont switch off? Maybe your TCM Spleen needs some attention Having sleep woes? Come on in.

23.01.2022 Spring is a really common time to experience sleep problems. If you are suffering from waking up between 1 and 3 am (for those all important committee meetings with yourself) or tossing and turning trying to get to sleep, there is help to be had. Spring is the season of your Chinese medicine "Liver". Things are beginning to stir after the dormant season of winter. Energy tends to be moving upwards and outwards - think of all the new leaves and lovely wildflowers. Think of wi...nd, moving and swirling. The downside is this: if there is one thing your Chinese medicine "Liver" does not like, its wind. All this new energy makes your Liver unhappy if you are a bit unbalanced after winter - and this will show up in your emotions running a little hot (expecially anger and frustration), and sleeping issues - specifically waking at 1 - 3am or finding it difficult to go to sleep because youre tossing and turning. Help is here - let me know if you would like some acupuncture and herbs to soothe away your sleep worries In the meanwhile, you can support your "Liver" during spring by making sure you include plenty of sour foods in your diet - such as lemons, limes, pickles or rosehip tea. Include cabbage, broccoli or leafy greens to help digest meat. Try to steam or quickly stir-fry your food at this time of year. Happy spring!

23.01.2022 You know that feeling - when you have a bit of a headche and you feel a bit achy but youre not sure if its because of the rough day you just had or if youre getting something. Well, dont take any chances - try green onion tea. Stick with me here, Im serious! It wont taste as bad as the herbs I give you, pinky promise. Chop up 4 green onions and put them in a saucepan of 2 cups of boiling water. Turn down to a simmer for around 10 minutes. Let it cool slightly, strain an...d drink. If that seems like it would taste too bad for you, mix in a spoonful of miso paste then drink. Warm shower, then bundle up into bed. You know it has worked if you break a slight sweat. It works! Give it a try

22.01.2022 Its always an awkward moment my new patient is laying on the table, Ive got needles out ready to stab them and I ask the innocent question so, have you had acupuncture before? It goes one of three ways either I get a no and Im super happy to get a first-timer. Or I get a yes I saw Grand Master Wu Tching Tching and he also gave me herbs Im cool with thator I get oh yes, I get acupuncture from my physio all the time. The third response generally sees a cold ...quietness begin to blanket the room as I put my needles down. Oh? I respond. Tell me more. Usually the patient blunders on, unaware of what is about to come. Want to know what I really think of dry needling? Check out my blog - link below. https://peonytiger.com.au/acupuncture-vs-dry-needling/

21.01.2022 Liver attacking the Stomach sounds pretty gnarly, and it is Along with the ever present constipation, diarrhoea or both, this pattern often accompanies IBS with irritability, upper abdominal distention (bloating above the belly button), burping and vurps (vomit burps). I usually see this combination of IBS triggered with different foods. If you suffer from this IBS, likely you have heard about FODMAPS and are having good results with following those guidelines.

21.01.2022 Here is an alcohol-free drink I enjoy, especially if I want to feel like I've got something. It is also my go-to in summer! Just take a glass of soda water (tonic water works good too), squeeze the juice of half a lime, then sweeten with stevia drops. Crush up some mint leaves and give it a mix - delish.

20.01.2022 This is how you can book online - either through Facebook or on my website.

20.01.2022 The best thing you can do after a treatment is take yourself home, have a nourishing meal, a bath or nice warm shower if you choose, and give your body the space to heal, repair and be nurtured. An acupuncture treament is giving your body the tools it needs to repair itself, so if you take that metaphorical tool bag, throw it in the boot and head off for a hectic game of four quarters playing Centre, it really isnt the best use of your treatment. Exercise is super important,... just not as important as allowing your body some time and space after a treatment. Take the night off

19.01.2022 There is no denying that a quiet beverage at the end of a trying day can help things seem a bit better. After all, alcohol is a mild sedative and a central nervous system depressant - calms you down. But if you have underlying anxiety, the truth is that alcohol will make that worse over the course of time. Certainly you may have experienced feeling more anxious the next day after a few drinks - not only is your body trying to process the toxic affects of alcohol out of your ...body, but the alcohol has caused havoc with your neurotransmitters such as serotonin. The upshot of a few beverages to calm yourself down is that you end up more anxious in the long run. Chinese medicine and acupuncture have a lot to offer if you are suffering from anxiety and finding yourself drinking a little more than you should. Why not give me a call? Or book in to get yourself back on track - caring for yourself is necessary, not a luxury.

19.01.2022 This week is National Diabetes week. Given that it is also Dry July this month and I have been focusing on the effects of alcohol, this is a great opportunity to look at the effects of alcohol on your blood sugar levels. In my book, along with good sleep and pooing every day, balanced blood sugar levels are a non-negotiable for good health.... It is no secret that alcohol contains carbohydrates - so indulging in a few glasses will initially cause your blood sugar to rise, along with your heart rate and blood pressure. However, there is also a subsequent crash in blood sugar, which has its own problems. Hello fatigue, weakness, shakes and hangover. The body recognises alcohol as poison, so it puts a hold on most processes in the body to prioritise clearing out the alcohol including the production of glucose and the hormones to regulate it. This is a bit of a problem as alcohol causes a spike in blood sugar (sugar rush) with nothing to mop up the extra blood sugar. Over time, regular and excessive consumption of alcohol may lead to permanently increased blood sugar in the body, or insulin resistance, which is the autobahn to diabetes type 2. You dont want that. Insulin resistance can be the ring leader of many things - including reflux, anxiety, oestrogen dominance...the list goes on. Wind in those drinks to protect your blood sugar levels, people! 16.01.2022 The third common pattern I see with IBS is the Liver attacking the Spleen. This one can be a little tricky, as the root cause can be emotional or food/lifestyle related. In any case, apart from the ever present diarrhoea, constipation or both, this one often has lower abdominal bloating (below the belly button), reflux/heartburn, tiredness and urrmmm...bits in your poo. Also, lots of sighing, and trouble falling asleep as the mind cannot be switched off. This one is triggered either with anxiety and/or rich, fatty foods or processed carbohydrates.

15.01.2022 Did you know that acupuncture can help you with your digestion issues such bloating and reflux, and with anxiety too?

14.01.2022 For a really long time now (like, a couple thousand years) Chinese medicine has known that acupuncture is really good for those pesky digestive problems. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), including diarrhoea, constipation, intestinal lining and general gut function can be helped with acupuncture. While there are lots of studies that still need to be done, a comprehensive review on acupuncture and the digestive system found a lot of positive studies to support the use of acupu...ncture in helping gut function. 13.01.2022 This month is Dry July. Are you going dry this July? Dry July is a concept that was born of three men who decided they needed to lay off alcohol, and in doing so wanted to raise money for cancer. They started Dry July, which thousands of Aussies raise money for each year. Here is a link to the foundation website: https://www.dryjuly.com/about I think Dry July is a wonderful cause, and I really hope you will get in there and support it, or donate to someone who is - however... Im not going to dwell any further on Dry July. I have decided that this month Im going to be delving into the affects of alcohol on our digestion and most especially on anxiety. Ill also share my own journey to going dry always - not just July. The thought of not drinking for a month causes most people to scratch their heads and wonder what they are going to do for a month, or even what people are going to think of them - but if you knew the affects of even moderate drinking, you might be prepared to give it a go. Ill also add in some facts for you along the way! I love facts If you have decided to go dry for July and want to make sure you stay on track, why not get acupuncture to keep you calm? You can click on the book now button above to choose a day and time that suits.

12.01.2022 Acupuncture has a cumulative effect, and rarely can it fix your health challenges in one treatment - if youre suffering from digestive problems, for example, you didnt wind up feeling unwell in the space of an afternoon. It is important to give your body the space and time it needs to heal!

12.01.2022 We know that 2 in 3 people who drink alcohol do not actually know how much they are consuming. Likely, they will not know the damage that can be done to the digestive system and long term health - but if you are going to have something to drink, at least know the risks involved... 12.01.2022 If you've been thinking of trying acupuncture for a little while now and you're worried about the whole needle thing? Stop it. Acupuncture doesn't hurt! You may have had dry needling before, but that's a slightly different technique - acupuncture needles in the hands of a trained acupuncturist really aren't that bad

10.01.2022 Not all acupuncturists are equal To be a registered acupuncturist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) you need to have completed a 4 or 5 year degree that includes either a Bachelor of Health Science or Biomedical Science. During the degree, we not only study acupuncture theory, acupuncture point location, Chinese herbal medicine and treating in the student clinic, Chinese exercise and Chinese medicinal nutrition, but we also study western medi...cine subjects such as biology, anatomy and physiology, pathology, biochemistry, pharmacology, research methods, clinical examination and public health. Its a lot to get through! And by the time we have finished our degree, we have generally done hundreds of hours of clinical practice over four years, which has allowed us to hit thousands of needles into some poor victim who was brave enough to let us practice. But the important thing is, we spend a lot of time learning to use acupuncture needles and understand your symptoms using a Chinese medicine framework. Heres the thing: anyone can hang out their shingle and say they do acupuncture. This is a disappointing loophole in our registration, as often those who do not have the proper qualifications give acupuncture a dodgy "snake oil" feel. Only the title "Acupuncturist" is protected. So, you may ask - well, what is the difference between your acupuncture and the acpuncture my Physio or Chiro does? The short answer is: nothing, and everything. Ill explain more later in the week. Spoiler alert: I actually like the "acupuncture" that Physios and Chiros do. But for the record, that is dry needling, not acupuncture

10.01.2022 Hey guys - it's been a super long day and I don't want to go live and scare you with my "frazzled" look, so I posted a picture instead Today I want to tell you that if you are a working mum, and it feels like the wheels are starting to wobble, that anxiety is creeping in, the weight is creeping up and not coming off like it used to, you're sick of eating something and blowing up like a balloon and that those 3am meetings with yourself worrying about the most ridiculous stuf...f is all OK. I would like to work with you and help you. You belong here

09.01.2022 Did you know that a proper sleep is really important a good immune system? During the first stage of your sleep, a deep sleep, your body repairs tissue, grows bone and tidies up your immune system. Poor quality sleep interrupts your bodys attempt to repair your immune system.... Chinese medicine can help get your sleep back on track! Dont put up with poor sleep.

06.01.2022 IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, is a really terrible and uncomfortable condition to live with. It can make the simplest of things seem too hard - the thought of a long car trip with a gripey belly and the promise of diarrhoea is a nightmare you would rather avoid. You dont have to live with it!... There is a possibility that you have been putting up with bloating, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea and belly pain for longer than you would like. Why not get it sorted? Chinese medicine can help. Here is a link for you to have read about how Chinese medicine may be ablet o help you: https://peonytiger.com.au/bloated-stomach/

06.01.2022 Only one in five Australian adults do not drink alcohol. A decade ago, was around one in six. Which meant that you werent catered for at restaurants. Other than Coca-cola, lemonade or water, there was little to choose from drinks-wise for the abstainer - but things are changing. Not drinking alcohol at all is becoming increasingly more acceptable with movements such as Dry July making it easier for people not to drink, and the drinks menu now usually sports a substantial ch...oice if you choose not to drink alcohol. You know I love facts, so here are some more about alcohol. 82% of Australian adults drink alcohol regularly, which means one in five Australian adults do not drink alcohol since 2013 there has been a 2.2% decline in the number of people who abstain from drinking alcohol (Roy Morgan report on Alcohol, 2018) 9 in 10 Australians consider themselves responsible drinkers, however on further questioning, two thirds of those people did not understand what risky levels of alcohol were Facts from the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE)

05.01.2022 So I mentioned last week that I love facts and figures - here are some figures to raise your eyebrows over. Since COVID-19 isolation measure: 70% of people report drinking more alcohol 1 in 3 people are concerned about the amount of alcohol being consumed by themselves or someone in their household 28% report drinking alcohol to cope with anxiety right now... 1 in 4 people drank way more alcohol than they planned on when they poured the first drink 1 in 5 people have started drinking earlier in the day This data comes from the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE). Want to start tackling any anxiety issues, or just start getting back to health? Time for acupuncture book now button above.

04.01.2022 OK, so I was Googling alcohol, results below speak for themselves. I did read a meme somewhere that said people will either come out of isolation a "hunk, a drunk or a chunk". Looks like Perth people chose drunk! On a serious note though...... Did you know that if you drink more that 4 standard drinks per day, you are 52% more likely to get bowel cancer? And moderate drinking, say up to 4 standard drinks per day, sets you up for a 21% increase in bowel cancer. Thats just cancer, and doesnt take into account the other chronic diseases that are underpinned with excess alcohold consumption. Consider mental health and blood sugar issues. Would you like to try going dry just for 5 days? Monday through to Friday? We could do a little challenge if you like? Let me know in the comments below, or PM me if you are interested.

04.01.2022 By now you have a fair idea that IBS isn't just one thing in Chinese medicine. There are many different ways to consider IBS, and often people see themselves in the TCM patterns that I commonly talk about. TCM is all about patterns, which makes acupuncture a great addition to managing your condition. Continuing the IBS patterns (we have one more after this!) one of the more common patters is Spleen Qi Deficiency with Damp. Generally, this is the one with just diarrhoea that e...nds up stopping you from leaving the house. It is usually accompanied by nausea , lack of appetite and extreme tiredness, along with a heavy feeling in the head (brain fog) and/or chest. Often these guys will also retain fluid ("damp") or find it hard to loose weight, and may have candida or fungal challenges.

03.01.2022 If you saw my live post last week and wondering about Evil Qi... In Chinese medicine it is thought that Wind carries pathogens such as Cold and Heat into the body through the neck area. Pathogens are known as Xie Qi, or, Evil Qi in Chinese medicine. If Wind has bought Cold into your body, known as a Wind-Cold invasion in TCM, you will have symptoms such as a headache, clear runny nose, and alternating chills and fever. ... If youve got a Wind-Heat attack, it will be all the above symptoms plus a sore throat. What to do? Try not to let it happen in the first place! Wear a scarf, which protects the back of your neck where the Evil Qi theoretically enter your body. Think youre getting something, maybe, not sure? Ill post some tips over the coming days on home remedies you can try. And what to do if all your efforts failed and those Evil little Qi got you.

02.01.2022 Did you know that many health funds in Australia cover acupuncture? If your acupuncturist is regsitered with AHPRA it is likely that you can claim their services with your health fund provider if you have selected that level of care. Ive got you covered
