17.01.2022 People have been fighting stupid ideas of development in the Pilliga for decades. In the early 1980s, there was a Pilliga Action Group which formed to stop the ...government setting up an army base in the forest. I have a copy of their submission with a forward by the Chair, Neil Kemmis, who is in his nineties now living in Boggabri. It all sounds very familiar and goes like this. "Dear Minister, This submission has been compiled following a statement by the Premier of New South Wales, the Hon. N.K. Wran, that an area of land in the Pilliga region south of Narrabri was under study for proposed Army training facilities. It proves that the area is not only unsuitable for Army training purposes but contains vast tracts of rich agricultural land, vast areas of valuable timbers and would be severely detrimental to the operation of scientific projects recently expanded. The livelihood of many families, communities and nearby towns would be seriously disrupted and the damage to the environment, including many rare species of flor and fauna, would be beyond repair. The Committee, who carried out exhaustive surveys from which this report was compiled, were elected at a series of Public Meetings held throughout the entire region, such meetings unanimously rejecting the establishment of any base in the Pilliga region and acquisition of any privately held land in this area. Those who will read and study this volume will become aware of the wealth of the area and will truly believe, as we do, that we should SAVE OUR PILLIGA.

03.01.2022 The Department of Planning kept this one very quiet didnt they? You might remember in the dead of drought last year, neighbours were crying out because Whitehaven just went ahead and built all these pipelines to get water to their thirsty mine at Maules Creek. Well at the time the Dept told us there was nothing untoward going on. Meanwhile, Whitehaven finally applied for permission to build the pipelines (after they were fully functioning and sucking up precious groundwater to spray on dust) and were given the approval by the Department. However, in hindsight it seems the Department of Planning have fined them for operating pipelines without permission.
