16.01.2022 A new round of grants is seeking to drive innovation and sustainability in the agriculture sector. Distributed by the Coles Nurture Fund, the grants of up to $500,000 are for small and medium-sized businesses to develop new products, technologies and processes. Businesses with innovative ideas, fewer than 50 full-time employees and turnover of less than $25 million in annual revenue are eligible to apply.... Since it was established in 2015, the Coles Nurture Fund has awarded more than $24 million in financial support to more than 60 Australian businesses to help them introduce ground-breaking technology, improve sustainability, establish new products and drive productivity. Previous Coles Nurture Fund projects include Australia’s first quinoa processing plant; an automated indoor facility that grows highly nutritious cattle fodder in just six days; and fence posts made from recycled soft plastic. 14.01.2022 Critical labour shortages are forcing Queensland farmers to pay higher wages and provide better conditions to attract local workers. The improved conditions come amid warnings of higher prices for consumers as food is left unpicked. Bundaberg lychee grower Craig van Rooyen said the coronavirus pandemic had forced him to rely on almost 100 locals to get fruit picked and packed.... "It's mostly a local workforce for the first time," he said. "We used mainly backpackers in the past, but because of coronavirus that has made it more difficult." The supply of overseas workers declined significantly after COVID-19 border restrictions curtailed international travel. 13.01.2022 Northern Australia farmers wanting to fine tune their financial management skills are encouraged to attend RaboClientCouncil's free financial skills workshop. Two practical workshops specifically designed to provide the financial skills essential to manage a farming operation will be available on the 23-24 February. Following the success of last year's virtual Financial Skills Workshop - which prior to COVID-19 was held face-to-face - the course will again be conducted online... in 2021, offered free of charge to farmers in the region. The workshops are spearheaded by food and agribusiness banking specialist Rabobank's RaboClientCouncil, a group of the bank's farming clients who volunteer their time implementing programs that contribute to the sustainability of rural communities.
