25.01.2022 We all want our homes to be comfortable with low energy costs. How can we do this in older homes? By retrofitting for sustainability. Architecture meets science on 3 December as POD architect and landscape architect, Belinda Allwood, joins scientists Jenny Edwards of Light House Architecture and Science, and Michael Ambrose of CSIRO. Register here: https://events.csiro.au//Renovating-and-Retrofitting-for-S

25.01.2022 POD self sufficiency post 2. Pesto anyone? In two weeks the mulch is down, the zucchinis are going crazy, the beans are out, and the potatoes have tiny green buds (in another two weeks they'll go in the recently made potato mound). The basil and tarragon (yellow flowers) are permanent weedlike herbs in the garden that get added to most things. Welcome to our chaotic food gardens that bring us great joy at this time. Happy choccy-iso-holiday everyone! #tropicalfoodgardens #selfsufficiency #easterholidaysinisolation #wfh #regionalarchitects #growyourownfood #sustainability #gardeningarchitects

24.01.2022 Each for Equal. Belinda and Shaneen wish you a balanced and inclusive IWD 2020. Belinda and Shaneen set up POD in 2014 to create a practice model that specifically supports inclusion and flexibility. We maintain that mission today by welcoming everyone including collaborators, families and pets. Every day is different! 23.01.2022 Sustainable, tropical, commercial and culturally responsive: Four words that encapsulate PODs Land and Sea Management Unit (LSMU) for the Torres Strait Regional Authority on Thursday Island. The LSMU is a two storey, commercial building for the rangers, scientists and policy managers of TSRA. When complete it will be the only 5.5 NABERS rated commercial building north of Cairns. POD is pretty excited about this! It has the option of operating without air-conditioning, conta...ins recycled elements from the original buildings on the site (timber, the original solar system), and sustainable finishes such as marmoleum floors and rainwater tanks for toilet flushing and landscape irrigation. It celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity in its form, spatial layout, awnings, built in art by artist Francoise Lane, and options for art projection across the building elevations. The building contractor is local and the estimated Indigenous employment and training outcomes are over 80%. The LSMU has come to fruition through a great relationship between client (TSRA), project manager (Black & More), architects (POD), artist (Francoise Lane @Indijdesign) and builder (Robert Clarke Builders). We look forward to celebrating the opening in June or July 2020! #regionalarchitects #womenarchitects #tropicalsustainablearchitecture #indigenousdesign #thursdayisland #torresstrait #indigenousarchitecture

23.01.2022 POD is going even greener! In the last two weeks our team have been madly gardening in their spare time. Here's the first of our posts on self sufficiency. Grow your own food in the tropics while you WFH. This garden was already established (incl. these delicious lady finger bananas) but we quickly turned in the compost, let it sit for two weeks, turned it over and then got some seeds in. Within a week the beans and baby zucchini plants are up and the organic fertiliser is doing it's work. It's too hot yet for broccoli, carrots or onions but the weather is perfect for greens, silverbeet, cucumber, and some beans! #architectsdeclare_au #workfromhome #growyourownfood #sustainablelandscapes #sustainability #tropicalfoodgardens #gardeningarchitects @ Cairns, Queensland, Australia

23.01.2022 EDITED POST: We have changed our post because we naively didn't realise that All Lives Matters is an anti- Black Lives Matters movement in the USA. Sorry! We still make mistakes, but everyday we keep working to end racism and discrimination. POD has been unusually silent over the past week and there is a reason for this. We have been lost for initial words. Black lives matter to us everyday. Our friends, family and colleagues matter to us everyday. We see people; not colour,... race, gender or age. We see discrimination and poverty, privilege, rhetoric and apathy and we get sick of having to protest these events, over and over again. We could not watch the footage of persecution that occurred in the USA and we did not post a black square, because that is not enough. We will join our brothers and sisters in the Cairns march today at Fogarty Park, 3pm. But more than this, we will continue to work together to listen, to educate, to respect, to provide economic opportunity, and to advocate for human rights and social justice. We are architects and designers and everything we design and create proclaims to the world what matters. Make your contribution matter to social justice, everyday. #inthistogether #blacklivesmatter See more

22.01.2022 Self sufficiency post 4: morning harvest. It's 8 weeks since planting and most plants are fruiting well now. Pumpkins, the best dwarf Ducasse bananas, beans, yellow passionfruit, radishes, cucumbers are all abundant. Tomatoes, potatoes, carrots are also on their way! There are no fertilisers or insecticides used in this garden and the native animals get first pick when no one is watching... #tropicalfoodgardens #growyourownfood #sustainability #4m2flatleafparsley #sickoffalafels

22.01.2022 Exciting new office interiors on Thursday Island, with Indigenous designer and artist Francoise Lane, and her surface pattern design "Nudibranchs" on acoustic panels and fabric surfaces @indijdesign. Nudibranchs are like sea slugs and include some of the most colourful and beautiful of sea creatures. They are small, only 50mm long and many have bright and elaborate colour patterns as spectacular as those seen in some butterflies. This design is inspired by Cyerce nigricans. #Indigenousdesign #francoiselane #interculturaldesign #womenarchitects #tropicalarchitecture #officeinteriors #torresstrait

20.01.2022 Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life at Lockhart River. A charter plane went down today close to the community project site we were visiting. Our thoughts are with the families of those lost. This image is from Belindas drone footage at the beach yesterday. Image not for media use without permission. #Lockhartriver #lockhartbeach

19.01.2022 Welcome Angela Morton to POD! When POD was recruiting we decided we need two fabulous new team members to meet our project load. We first met Angela working on the Toomelah project with Kramer Ausenco in 2016, and we didnt forget her enthusiasm and attention to detail. Angela has Pacific Islander heritage, a Ni-Vanuatu Australian and grew up all over the world. We were very pleased that she has joined our team. @angela_n_m Welcome Angela to the POD! Its getting full in here now #womenarchitects #regionalarchitects #tropicalarchitecture #indigenousarchitecture

19.01.2022 On the drawing board: A new plunge pool, decks and landscape for a rural res site near Cairns. Interconnected garden spaces extend living zones, frame mountain views and provide sanctuary in the expansive tropical surrounds. We find combining architecture and landscape brings immense joy to our projects. Our multitalented team have qualifications in architecture, landscape architecture, horticulture and project management. @ Cairns, Queensland, Australia #landscapearchitecture #tropicaldesign #cairnsarchitects #landscapedesign

19.01.2022 How does POD support community? Since POD's inception we have always had a mandate to support community organisations with probono and prorated work. We love it! This year POD implemented a formal policy that commits us to working on two projects for community benefit each year at little or no cost. When you engage POD you are contributing to our community work. In 2019-2020 we have provided support to, - CAfT (Centre for Appropriate Technology) and Engineers Without Border...s on open source design, easy-to-build toilet and shower units for remote areas that can be made from locally milled hardwood, and have composting or hybrid waste systems. -UQ, the Prince's Trust and INTBAU (International Network of Traditional Building Architecture and Urbanism) on the development of the Enduring Design Masterclass, which will be a week long cross cultural immersive learning experience for architecture students and professionals. The masterclass links design, culture, traditional technologies and sustainability through interactive workshops. -A new open source initiative around Indigenous community health infrastructure with TheFulcrum.Agency that will be announced soon. #payitforward #probonodesign #supportingcommunity #enablingeducation #interculturaldesign #communityhealth #SOS_UQ See more

16.01.2022 The Trinity Beach House is our latest example of The Least House Necessary philosophy in action. The site was originally a single large lot, which the client subdivided into two smaller lots. The new lot is 546m2 and the new three bedroom, two bathroom dwelling is 130m2, supplemented with a courtyard deck (38m2) and pool. This house is flexible: the main bedroom and ensuite can be securely locked and separated from the rest of the house so that family and friends can stay an...d utilise the living areas while the owners are away. It has been designed around a courtyard to maximise cross ventilation and create comfortable outdoor living areas, while maintaining privacy from the neighbours. Trinity Beach House achieved over 8 stars in its energy assessment through careful orientation, glazing and window design, insulation and material selection, and will be very comfortable without air conditioning. Thank you to committed and fabulous clients and builders for coming with us on this journey! 16.01.2022 Welcome Rohana Fullarton, the latest pea to join POD! Rohana is a Masters Graduate of UQ Architecture with excellent previous experience from Bark Architects and Reddog Architects. 15.01.2022 Iso-baking process pics for interested parties. The kitchen is a disaster and it was a 6hr commitment to get this beauty out. We had to adjust the design to an 8 arch solution because 16 arches would have led to structural failure. 15.01.2022 Self sufficiency post 3: four weeks in isolation and there are zucchinis and pumpkins fruiting, beans flowering, tons of lemons and tatsoi to pick. The joy of growing our own food is a welcome distraction from home schooling, and running projects in communities in lockdown. Happy Wednesday comrades! There will be food sharing soon! #regionalarchitects #tropicalfoodgardens #workingfromhome

15.01.2022 Tools for social distancing and site visits! For about 6 months POD has had a drone. It is a very handy tool for site visits, aerial imagery and social distancing. You can get great images of the parts of site that are inaccessible by foot or vehicle, which made it very handy for our recent work in Boulia and Lockhart River. Belinda is registered with CASA to fly drones in the commercial excluded category (less than 2kg). Here we are in western Queensland where the sky is clear and the soil is red prior to WFH. We also offer to give the community and site imagery back to the clients gratis. #regionalarchitects #architectswithdrones #womenarchitects #landscapearchitecture #siteassessment #socialdistancing #sheflies #payitforward

14.01.2022 Under Construction! POD has been working with local artists from Yarrabah, Philomena Yeatman and Wayne Connolly, to embed healing water and sea hawk stories into the new Health & Wellbeing Centre at Yarrabah. Here is a deadly render of the proposed building and entry art screen. Thanks to Angela Morton for making this great image and repeat pattern. The Health & Wellbeing Centre is currently under construction and due for completion by May 2021. 08.01.2022 Shaneen is feeling very honoured to be part of the First Nations Advisory Working Group and Cultural Reference Panel for the Australian Institute of Architects. There is a vast landscape of change ahead of us, but we can do it! "The Working Group and Panel will scope, recommend and develop a range of actions that could be out into place to support and promote beneficial outcomes between First Nations peoples and the Institute including supporting the Institute to develop a... Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). The Working Group with support from the Panel will also provide guidance on the inclusive involvement of First Nations peoples in both Architectural education and the Institute's services, programs, activities and governance. As well as any other issue or activity the Working Group, with advice from the Panel, identifies should be under consideration by the Institute." 05.01.2022 Building community resilience: Toomelah Multi-Purpose Facility (MPF) in NSW, completed with Kramer Ausenco. The Toomelah MPF replaced an old community hall with a larger flexible space that hosts an array of cultural, community and sporting events. It includes a commercial kitchen, amenities and office spaces. Toomelah MPF required POD to apply our adept community engagement, intercultural design and architecture skills in a tight timeframe. We brought together many stakehol...der groups through careful forward planning including the local Land Council, Australian Government, local shire council, service providers and Australian Army. The site was constrained by flood and bushfire overlays and the completed facility is above the Q100 flood level and built to BAL 19. The project enhances critical connections to the local church, cemetery and Country. PODs experience working with Indigenous people enabled us to understand the importance these connections and integrate them into design outcomes. Toomelah is currently facing challenges with the COVID 19 state border lockdown. You can hear about the challenges here https://podcasts.apple.com//episode-17-covid/id1471488202

02.01.2022 We are halfway through one of our favourite weeks of the year. NAIDOC Week! On Monday Belinda helped coordinate the Australian Institute of Architect's QEDIC Reconciliation Webinar, which was a great success thanks to Kelly Greenop, Carroll Go Sam and Sarah Lyn Rees. This Friday we will be celebrating NAIDOC Week with our friends at Synapse Community Living Initiative in Cairns, which provides supported accommodation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with complex disabilities. Each year we celebrate with Synapse and enjoy an afternoon of art and craft, music and dancing. We hope you find a way to celebrate NAIDOC Week in your local community. #NAIDOC2020 #synapse #communityarchitects #indigenousarchitecture

01.01.2022 Trinity Beach House staged with a variety of PODee furniture just prior to practical completion. How do you make a courtyard house work in the tropics? Give it internal louvres so that it can breathe all the way through. Make them a dark colour for privacy and light control, and make air conditioning optional. The client's aesthetic precedents for this house were tropical modern, industrial and a palette of grey, black and white. Mixing these colours with an Australian plantation hardwood floor creates rich and relaxing tones with very clean edges. Its also handy if you know someone with lovely red Featherstone chairs. #macparkbuilders #cairnsarchitects #leasthousenecessary #womenarchitects #tropicalhousing #sustainabledesign #featherstonechairs #
