25.01.2022 Ewe hogget shearing , there’s some serious wool here and another big step forward on last year . Now I can’t wait till next year! For those who love wool just zoom in

23.01.2022 Well...80mm of rain here in the last fortnight, it’s proper wet. The good waxy wools on these rams will not disappoint and easy to pick out. Rain hail or shine or covid or anything else you can think of, we are having a Sale ! Monday 24th August 1pm

21.01.2022 Have I got this maths right?

20.01.2022 Many thanks to all ! See you next year PS how good is Vicki’s pumpkin soup

17.01.2022 What value in $ do you put on a new born lamb? I make it about $50. Give or take? I started with a weaned 100 day old lamb@ 32 kg x $3.20/kg = $102.4 less .6 DSE , 219kg DM x 20c/kg= $43 plus marking costs and the ram. If this lamb pictured weans at 40kg he is worth $80!!

16.01.2022 Hi everyone, Firstly thank you for taking the time to read my post . Most important is this group of sires ,are mostly unproven, of a very high standard and the assessment is 1 sires progeny not a reflection on the whole stud. One of the prime objectives of the evaluation site is to find young unproven sires that breed on well to take our great merino industry forward with speed and accuracy. This is my speal on PW7031 the ram in a previous post on ski...n assessment. Semen quality is mobile and very good . Leading to a higher than ave number of progeny. Traits with a blue square are trait leaders ,7031 has blue for YGF. YSS. YFAT and just missing YEMD by a few points . YSS n/Kt. by the way strongly correlates with genetic fat . Now let’s look at body weight W. weaning P. Post weaning Y. Yearling. 7031 is below ave on all . Strecklich means worse than terrible in Barossa Deutsche. No , not at all , that is the sweet spot . If your ewes are getting too big , they are less feed efficient = less ewes per ha. In turn = less lambs /ha . A moderate sized sheep (65-70 kg ewe ) is better, think $ / ha. 1 DSE IS 50 kgs live. Pretty much every other trait , he is ave or slightly better . He is meaty with good genetic fat , of moderate size , cuts enough wool and ( this is the traite that is a real $ driver) topped out sharing Negative 20 % culls ,with the heaviest sire in the group . It’s not easy for a smaller sheep to get through the classing process without being culled. Think about it . This is , so important and something I set out to build into our stud right from the start. . Pre evaluation, 7031 has lousy ASBVs due to lack of pedigree and accuracy. But now quite good with blue squares for YSS & YSL with high accuracy. Below is a link to all the data https://merinosuperiorsires.us6.list-manage.com/track/click Cheers H See more

15.01.2022 Hi All. A big Thank you to all the bidders , under bidders and interested people at the Pepper Well on property auction on the 26 th August. With a beautiful sunny day a few drought effected buyers absent plus a flurry of new faces and our valued regular clients present , all contributing to a very successful day. We managed a good clearance with 31 of 34 sold with an average of $1270. To a top of $4000 pictured L-R. Auctioneer G.Wood Alice & Darren Sanders myself David... ‘Banger’ Schultz . Looking forward . There is allot going on in the wool industry right now and it’s far to say that unmulesed wool is providing a healthy premium. It is obvious that the market has changed with ethically managed sheep and wool now in demand . So I have secured some bare breech genetics with excellent EMD & fat with a top wool as well. Many thanks to Brenton & Jane Smith for doing the final selection ect. Also this dynamic duo have concocted a thorough review of all the motels hotels and caravan parks they have visited , should make for interesting reading or even a video well done ! Cheers Hansi

14.01.2022 2020 Mcpiggery sire evaluation update. The Mcpiggery team have done a fantastic job managing and field day presentation of 2019 ewe hgts. As well as penning up the 2020 lms for everyone’s inspection. This is a real highlight for PW sire 188187 topping out with the heaviest average weight of 45.8kgs 90 days after weaning. = 159 grams per day over the 90 days. Next best 144/day . Now the highest weaning weight lms at 33.6kg WWT , weigh 44 kgs and did 119 /day gain in the 90 days. What’s the significance of these numbers and how do should we be using them? Please correct me Dwane if I have the number of days pwwt wrong .

13.01.2022 Natural plain breeches. Baaazilian!

11.01.2022 This photo says allot for me . That’s a Merino 21 kg lm body at 4 1/2 mths age on grass and mothers milk only . Plus the smooth wrinkle free skin and plus the elite ewes 19 mic. fibre . Now the challenge is to get the whole flock to do this .

10.01.2022 Mustering preshearing Saturday morning. After 3 years of drought this country is very bare with most sheep camps drifting. 300 ewes on 1500 acres fed only 6 rolls of hay , sheep condition score 2.8 ave . Not fat score. Merinos are truly amazing animals, how they can squeeze a bit of energy out of , looks like nothing really.

10.01.2022 If you’re on the fence about attending our sale tomorrow this should get ya !! Last year averaged just over $1000 /ram.

09.01.2022 Hope you can make it to our sale see you Monday. H

09.01.2022 Am I the only person who did not know this?

08.01.2022 Very good chance this field day will go ahead . Fantastic news!

07.01.2022 Ok the Keith field day was last week. If you like this video you will really like the young sires at our inspection day 17th August ! Hope to see you then . Here is video of 3 generations of PW blood rams. Showing longevity, wool quality and predictability.Hope you like this stuff, as much as we do. Cheers Hansi.

07.01.2022 The entire 2019 drop of ram lms at 9 months of age with 5 mths wool growth.

06.01.2022 A Pepper Well Ewe yearling with 7 mths wool growth.

06.01.2022 In this video is the complete drop of sire evaluation entrant , PW 177031 ram lambs , at 10.5 mths of age ,6 mths wool growth. Warts and all , but you can see how he gets -20%cull in the evaluation results.

02.01.2022 Hi everyone, This is a short video of me assessing a sheep skin . Things to take note of. The animal has no discomfort. The elasticity of the skin . The way the skin springs back .... I use hardly any effort to firstly grasp then lift the skin , so use soft hands . If you need more information or clarification please ask . Cheers Hansi See more

02.01.2022 INSPECTION DAY 17 th August 1pm that’s tomorrow! Already!

02.01.2022 Pepper Well ewe hoggets there will be a few tender wools to take out from around April. This mob had no suppliment feeding yet 40 still managed to conceive and hold a pregnancy at this time ! For those who can remember Dr Julius Sondermiller why is this so??

02.01.2022 Mothering the 177031 lambs . Yesterday there was a little wind and the ewes weren’t finding their lambs . Today no wind and a much better result. I recon this ram lamb 0228 could be a stud reserve, early days but I like his potential. All of these ewes in this mating group, reared a lamb as a hogget last September and have a lite tail strip only. The bare area below the tail is all natural. We weaned the lms at 20 kg mid Nov. Ewes recover and back with ram 177031 mid January with 100% lambs marked of ewes mated.

01.01.2022 26 kg carcass. With a 4.4 kg skin bare shorn hocks on. Last time I did this exercise the skin weighed 6 kg from a similar sized animal , so there’s a huge variation . This has me thinking and from a research point of view I’d like you to take a few photos of your ration sheep before and after they’re slaughtered and weigh the skin bare shorn and the carcass. There is no right or wrong most of the rations we home kill are all culls we all get this . The more extreme the better .Then post to the Sheep skin weights page. Cheers H
