19.01.2022 Keeping the kids entertained in your own Backyard this summer! Summer school holidays are here. So it's the perfect time to make the most of your backyard! If your kids are bored with the trampoline or backyard cricket, or you're having difficulty prising them away from an iPad, it’s time to get a little bit creative.... Check out these easy, inexpensive and entertaining ideas, guaranteed to keep kids occupied and maximise their vitamin D intake with minimal supervision. Gardening The perfect activity for the exercise-averse tween, or if you have a more compact backyard. Pick an exciting plant that thrives in warm, sunny conditions such as gardenias (which can grow in pots), bougainvillea (which quickly takes on a life of its own) or, if you're feeling adventurous, a frangipani tree. If your kids aren't too keen on flowers, try herbs or lettuces (which take around five weeks to full mature). As the holidays stretch out, these plants will change in appearance just enough to hold interest as your kids watch them grow each day. Treasure hunt Why wait until Easter? After the kids have gone to bed each night, creep out into your yard and go nuts. You can hide anything from fun-size chocolate bars to toys and provide them with a list of clues to build excitement and buzz. Camping There’s nothing quite like camping in a tent in your own backyard. But take it up a level this year by taking a couple of blow-up mattresses into the garden for an unobstructed view of the stars. DIY art Grab an old double-bed top sheet and peg it to the clothesline. Next, grab five or six spray bottles and fill them with water and a drop of food colouring. Now, encourage your kid to channel their inner Jackson Pollock by squirting the coloured water onto the sheet. The more mess, the better! At least that’s what you can tell yourself before you call them in for a bath.
19.01.2022 5 REASONS YOU NEED A RUG IN YOUR HOME! A rug can effortlessly transform any room. Plus, they also offer a range of practical benefits from warming your home, to reducing noise and protecting your floor. Here are our top suggestions to help you find the perfect rug for your room! ... Modern or traditional. For a more traditional look, opt for a Persian or Provincial style rug. Or, if you want to make a bold statement with colour or texture, choose a modern abstract or block-colour rug. Got kids? Wool rugs are beautiful, but they also pile, which may not be great for crawling babies or young children. And for a kids’ room, acrylic heat-set weave rugs generally provide more affordable options that will better withstand wear and tear. Consider the traffic. Consider how much foot traffic your rug is going to be exposed to. High-pile rugs will wear easily and more obviously in a busy room, while low-weave rugs like sisal will withstand heavier and more regular foot traffic. Size matters. When choosing a rug think about the size of your room. Nothing looks worse than a too-small rug in a large room. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to go a little larger as placing furniture on (rather than around) a rug is a style statement in itself.

17.01.2022 GREENING YOUR SPACE: PLANT TRENDS AND TIPS We all love a little greenery around the home! Check out our top tips for making your indoor plants really pop! Hanging plants. Hanging plants are a great way of incorporating greenery into smaller indoor and outdoor spaces. Select plants that are easy to look after, work best for the space where you are displaying them and suit the amount of natural light and moisture available. Opt for plants like geraniums or ferns that are l...arge enough to spill over the basket. Clusters. Why not draw attention to the greenery in a room by creating a plant cluster? Use a minimum of three plants, with contrasting colours, textures and forms and place them in an eye-catching location. Climbers. Take a leaf out of Joost Bakker’s book and opt for climbing plants for walls and fences to cover or soften indoor and outdoor spaces. A laser cut metal screen attached is great for growing plants through and will also create an appealing design feature. Choose a feature plant. Last but not least, an interesting, sculptural looking plant like a Japanese Maple or a Cardboard Palm in an antique urn is a great way to create a design centrepiece in your hall or lounge. Choose an option that works well with your colour scheme and the available space.

15.01.2022 KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD NOISE RESTRICTIONS Power tools, parties and overly excited furry friends! Your neighbourhood can be a noisy place. By familiarising yourself with local noise regulations, you can relax in your own home and ensure your neighbours can too! Whether it’s music blaring late at night or lawnmowers buzzing early in the morning, here’s everything you need to know about sounds that drive us all crazy.... Music. If it’s played at the right times, music can be great. But at other times, if it’s keeping people awake and causing unnecessary tension it can be a headache. In Victoria loud music must be switched off between 10pm and 7am Monday to Thursday. On Fridays, the curfew is 11pm. Music is also restricted before 9am and after 11pm on Saturdays, and before 9am and after 10pm on Sundays. Pets. A pooch that barks all night is definitely not ‘man’s best friend’. Complaints about noisy dogs should be directed to the relevant local council, which can, if deemed appropriate, fine the animal’s owner or instruct them to abate the barking. Power tools. If you’re planning to do some work around your home, build some furniture or tidy the garden, make sure you don't use power tools like lawnmowers, leaf blowers, or electric drills and saws before 7am or after 8pm from Monday to Friday. On weekends and public holidays, usage is limited to between 9am and 8pm. Vehicles. Whether we’re talking a ride-on lawnmower or a Lamborghini, if it’s got an engine, chances are its owner will rev it with gusto. So you can enjoy driving your new toy without driving your neighbours insane, make sure your vehicle is quiet before 7am and after 8pm on weekdays, and before 9am and after 8pm on weekends and public holidays, unless you’re entering or leaving your home.

13.01.2022 Masterclass: How to make the perfect sponge cake. Baker Adam Cox knows a thing or two about sponge, having made cakes for plenty of celebrity customers, including Ralph Lauren, Damien Hirst, Jonathan Ross and Jimmy Carr. Follow his 10 simple tips that will produce a light, fluffy, moist triumph, every time. Have your ingredients ready... Have all ingredients prepared and weighed out before starting to mix. This will ensure that the mixing process can be completed without having to stop and start while you're weighing out, which could result in over-mixing. Room temperature Keep all ingredients at room temperature (butter nice and soft, eggs not too cold). By having the eggs at room temperature, it means the yolks and whites combine more easily, ensuring a more even bake. Mix it up Use a mixer if possible to cream the butter and sugar first. This is the quickest and most effective way to get a creamy consistency in your batter. Gently does it Fold in the flour gently by hand. This is the best way to combine heavy ingredients with light ones, to ensure that as much air is retained in the mixture as possible. DON'T over-mix Over-mixing can make the mixture curdle, which affects the overall bake of the cake. Add milk If your mixture looks too thick, add a drop of milk. This will help to keep both your mixture and the consistency of the cake smooth. A thick, stodgy mix will most likely end up as a thick, stodgy cake! Keep it real When adding flavour, use real ingredients such as vanilla pods and lemon zest wherever possible, as these provide the best flavour. Grease up Always line the tin using greaseproof paper. Using butter can make the cake greasy after it has finished baking. Patience Don't open the oven too soon, no matter how eager you are! The air release will cause the cake to drop. Enjoy making it! If you are relaxed then it always comes across in the end result.

10.01.2022 Did you know that it takes only 20 seconds for a child to drown? It's Water Safety Week and as the weather warms up we need to aim to reduce the number of drowning incidents in Victoria over the summer period. Supervision is constant visual contact with your child. Make sure you are in a position to respond quickly by keeping children under 5 years within arms’ reach and children under 10 years be in sight. ... Supervision is not an occasional glance while you read or undertake household chores, and it is not looking outside at your kids playing while you are inside. Supervision Tip: Minimise any temptation to leave a child unsupervised near water by having everything ready before bathing your child or going for a swim (i.e. towels, sunscreen, dry clothes, phone etc.) Learn more via the website: http://ow.ly/GaEb50CsR3N #duckwatch #watersafetyweek2020 #PISBTW #watersafety #safersummer #childsupervision
