03.01.2022 Portrait artist, Ian Grieve, who has been living in the NT for the last three years and has taken up the artist brush to paint local identity, Des Rogers, of Al...ice Springs for the upcoming Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award, Competition for 2012. Ian said, "I believe Des Rogers is an individual who is one of those rare people who have passion that motivates them. He has a strong sense of community and this coupled with his belief, that all people can achieve great things with the right support, has led Des to start his 'pepperedBLACK Ndundarinj (mentoring) business; by focusing on helping fellow Indigenous men and women with opportunities to be business leaders, and innovators in commercial enterprises. These opportunities can lead to a renaissance of a 'New Indigenous Culture' allowing Indigenous Australians to fulfill their destiny in developing the future for all Australians" Ian's portraits capture likeness and project the character and personality of each individual. He always paints from life and his subjects usually visits his studios for sittings over a three to four week period. Ian has completed commissions for the Queensland State Government of former Queensland Premiers. These paintings are now hanging in Parliament House Brisbane. If painting can be likened to an artful journey Ian Grieve would be considered an intrepid traveler who discovers new horizons and revelations at every stop. Conceding that one can constantly push back the restraints of each medium, Ian edges closer, sitting by sitting, to what he believes makes an individual tick. "This way, you learn so much about them...by talking to the people and getting an understanding about their background," Ian Intimates. This approach has been a boon for his art; he is able to go well beyond the surface and pick up the character traits. Some of Ian's portrait subjects have been * Playwright - David Williamson * Author - Nancy Cato * Cartoonist/Author, Doug Tanish as well as several former Queensland Premiers. Ian was the first Australian to lecture at the Central Acadamy of Art and Design, in Beijing PR China. Artist Ian Grieve has also been a finalist in the 'World Ceramic Competition' in Japan representing Australia.
