25.01.2022 This week I found my ‘foundation hen’ Marge, dead in her pen. Her mate Homer was down there with her. She had been in a heavy moult, and I think the sudden cold snap, and the stress of the damn mouse numbers was all too much. It’s the end of such an amazing breeding pair. I have introduced a little bob white hen into Homers pen, just to give him a reason to live. He has accepted her into his space really well. He is such a lovely natured boy. ... I buried Marge under a crimson Agonis which serves her well... I think I will lose my original Stubble hen, plus one of the original Bob White hens as well. They are struggling with the stress of this season to say the least. Sad times. See more

25.01.2022 What are my chances? Had a power outage for 5 hours. One incubator has a clutch of Sumatra Fowl eggs ( Day 5) The other had Quail eggs at Day 10. I put them in fleecy socks and wrapped them in a blanket ... Will any survive? See more

25.01.2022 Ok Sweetie. I think you can start sitting now.

24.01.2022 Its a bit chilly today Mum... Whats with these weather changes?

24.01.2022 Stolen from The Quail Man... But it struck a chord with me.

23.01.2022 Ms Cranky Pants (D2) has hatched out 2 baby Bob Whites. It was a bit of an experiment to see if she would incubate and accept them. There were a few glitches during the incubation period which left her with only 3 fertile eggs ( Mocha the dog MAY have discovered where she was nesting ), but she has at least proven she will do it ... NOW we have to hope they survive her treading on them with her EXTReMELY deformed foot.

23.01.2022 Spent a little while making some nesting pods for the quail today. Hoping the Stubbles will use them, but they may not.

22.01.2022 The odd couple Incubated and hatched and brooded together. Very bonded so cant separate ( until one gets a girlfriend I guess)

22.01.2022 I love the little Bob White nesting ‘bunkers’ they create.

22.01.2022 The slowest start to the season I have ever had I think. No Bob White males calling out. Very few eggs. Maybe its the lack of rain?

22.01.2022 Homer and Marge. Sorry if you get bored with me raving about them.

21.01.2022 My main man Homer has lost his topknot... been gone for a few weeks now... I have never had this happen before. Would it be age, mice,Marge? Anyway...Marge is sitting and SOME of them are fertile.. hoping for a safe incubation and hatching. I have 3 Cali hens sitting at the same time. Thats a firstI

20.01.2022 Not a very clear photo of this little family, but both the chick in the feed dish, and the tiny one are from the same clutch. It seems fine and active, its just bantam size.

20.01.2022 I have fertile Californian and Bob White Quail eggs available if anyone is interested. $30 per doz + express postage cost

18.01.2022 When you have a single quail chick hatch, and have to buy him a cuddle toy to act as his mum/dad They dont do well on their own 7 days old and quite happy.

18.01.2022 How cute are these guys.

18.01.2022 OMG!! Am travelling overseas at the moment. Very low funds but should I NOT buy one of these? Does anyone want me to grab them one. ( you will have to deposit funds )

17.01.2022 Have a bit of a drama going on at the moment Favourite pair of Stubble Quail seem to be having domestic disputes. She has laid 4 eggs but is very VERY aggressive to her mate. I have taken the eggs now in case she is just being nest protective. I have added more greenery and a tree branch to change the pen around and give him somewhere to retreat to. ... At this rate I doubt the eggs could be fertile. I will incubate and keep you updated. Fingers crossed that peace returns to their aviary. They were SOO bonded last season. See more

17.01.2022 I cant remember where we got this cat trap from, or how much it cost, but the number of escapee Quail it has recaptured for me has well and truely made it invaluable.

16.01.2022 The Bob White family at Dooen Rd had a visitor this morning. They didnt appear too phased.

16.01.2022 Hope ( bought down from NSW last year) has done herself proud, and successfully hatched some chicks. After the worst breeding season I have EVER experienced, finally something to put a smile on my face.

15.01.2022 Second clutch of eggs for the season from this Stubble Quail pair, but shes still not sitting. Think I am going to have to incubate these too... I so wanted her to sit. I just dont want to waste them though.

15.01.2022 One little Californian hen finally managing to get size and colour in her eggs correct. She was sitting already ( very early in the season) so I candled her eggs last night. A nest of 14 eggs but only 2 fertile. Popped the 2 in the incubator, and am now letting them start again. Hoping he can catch up with her fertility.

15.01.2022 I may be branching out.

14.01.2022 That time of year again. Cute Bob White Quail nest.

14.01.2022 I love the little Bob White nesting bunkers they create.

13.01.2022 Sooooo... my pair of Bob White Quail from NSW ( Bob And Hope) have had a trial separation ( due to family violence) but Hope has taken out an AVO on Bob ( with good reason) Bob is now in solitary confinement and Hope has moved on to a new relationship with Bidey. ( Keith Biden) I hope she is happy to settle to laying and sitting with her new gentle man, and her eggs from Bob, will be incubated and then fostered out. I was pretty disappointed with how it played out, but her safety is paramount.

13.01.2022 The Bob White Quail have started laying. Hopefully the Californians start soon too. I will be selling fertile eggs late October if anyone wants some.

12.01.2022 It’s sooo disgusting outside I have bought some of the quail inside ( plus one clucky bantam who refuses to get off her nest)

11.01.2022 I bought Hope and Bidey inside yesterday as I knew their pen wasn’t set up for the ‘extreme weather event’. They are none too happy with me, but they will live to thank me another day!!

11.01.2022 3 healthy Stubble Quail chicks from 4 fertile eggs. They are from my favourite( calmest) pair. Have another clutch of her eggs in the incubator now plus some from another pair who werent fertile for their first clutch. Fingers crossed.

11.01.2022 This little Stubble needs some foot physio Hopefully I can straighten him out..

09.01.2022 The Bob White family at Dooen Rd had a visitor this morning. They didn’t appear too phased.

08.01.2022 Its sooo disgusting outside I have bought some of the quail inside ( plus one clucky bantam who refuses to get off her nest)

07.01.2022 Last September one of the young Bob White hens had a compound fracture of her lower leg. I used plastic tubing as a cast with amazing results. I have only just got around to catching her to take a photo.

07.01.2022 Batches of eggs from 2 different Stubble Quail eggs. What distinctive patterns. No wonder they can recognise their own clutch.

07.01.2022 Who knew that Bunnings even sold Quail splints.

06.01.2022 Looking forward to a cooler few days predicted ... I have got 4 brooder boxes of quail that need to be out in pens, but its been too hot to do that transition from indoors to outdoors. Tomorrow its out into the big wide(r) world. Fingers crossed.

06.01.2022 We all have those kind of days.

06.01.2022 I bought Hope and Bidey inside yesterday as I knew their pen wasnt set up for the extreme weather event. They are none too happy with me, but they will live to thank me another day!!

06.01.2022 One of 6 Stubble quail chicks from my favourite ( foundation pair) hatched in incubator Thursday. Good news is, one of the young pairs has started laying too. Secret is.... HEAPS of cover in their aviary. A pile of dried weeds.

02.01.2022 My ‘main man’ Homer has lost his topknot... been gone for a few weeks now... I have never had this happen before. Would it be age, mice,Marge? 02.01.2022 Here’s hoping for a happy and healthy year.
