24.01.2022 Things are heating up! Remember that our pet's paws are sensitive to heat the same way our feet are! If you're unsure if the pavement is too hot to walk on, put your hand to the pavement for five seconds, if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for your dog!

18.01.2022 We'll reveal the answer to this tricky 'Who Am I' video tomorrow!

17.01.2022 The weather is heating up so we thought it was a good time to revisit some bushfire safety with your pets. The CFA suggests keeping a Pet Bushfire Relocation Kit on hand that includes: Food and water A bowl for each pet A second collar and lead... A carrier for cats and smaller pets Bedding and a woolen blanket A pet first-aid kit seek your vet's advice A favourite toy Any medications, along with a written list of what they are Your pet's medical history, including proof of vaccination Your vet's contact details See more

17.01.2022 Time for a Thursday Tutorial! DID YOU KNOW... that dogs have 3 eyelids?! A top and bottom lid (like us) and a 3rd eyelid that is tucked under the lower lid. It’s job is to sweep back and forth across the surface of the eye to provide protection and also to spread the tear film over the front of the eye. DID YOU ALSO KNOW... that their watery tear film is produced by 2 different glands, each producing seperate components of overall tear film?! The ‘Lacrimal Gland’... sits behind the upper eyelid and the ‘Nictitans Gland’ which is attached to the base or back of the 3rd eyelid where it sits tucked away and is not normally visible. BUT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THINGS GO WRONG? Occasionally, due to trauma or eyelid shape (some breeds are more predisposed due to this e.g. Bulldog, Shih Tzu, Lhasa Apso, Cocker Spaniel, Great Dane & Mastiff) the third eyelid can prolapse from its normal position and is then visible as a pink mass near the inner corner of the eye. It is thought to resemble a cherry and therefore is given the common term ‘CHERRY EYE’. With the sensitive gland exposed, it cannot effectively produce tears and therefore causes the surface of the eye to become dry and makes it more susceptible to damage. SO HOW IS IT FIXED? The gland is not removed, rather it is replaced using a very specific and delicate surgical technique that involves creating a ‘pocket’ on the inside of the 3rd eyelid into which the gland can be placed and permanently secured using very fine suture material. Big, handsome Stanley, the 51kg Mastiff, underwent surgery with Dr Kate this week to correct his Cherry Eye. Check out the ‘before and after’ pics to see the gland disappear! . . . #vet #veterinarian #veterinarysurgery #veteye #veteyesurgery #ophthalmology #veterinaryophthalmology #dogeyes #cherryeye #dog #mastiff #mastiffeyes

11.01.2022 10th CHRISTMAS TIME TIP! 10. Prevent your pet from accidentally ingesting batteries that may be packed in with presents or in the toys, watches, remote controls or Christmas lights that may be around at Christmas time. Our pets often have a habit of eating first and thinking later. They are curious creatures, and while they don’t normally seek out batteries for the delicious taste, they can just be ‘investigating’ them, or even accidentally chew on them while chewing on so...mething a little more appealing! DID YOU KNOW... that different batteries can have different dangers?! ALKALINE DRY-CELL BATTERIES (9V, D, C, AA, AAA) - when chewed or swallowed these batteries can cause irritation and ulceration to the mouth and gut or even cause obstructions further down the digestive tract (see the X-ray!) DISC-SHAPED or BUTTON BATTERIES - will allow an electrical current to pass through the tissue of the digestive tract and may result in the complete perforation of the mouth, oesophagus, stomach or small intestine. Lithium button batteries (the ones commonly found in children’s toys, watches and hearing aids) are the most dangerous. Ingestion of just one 3-volt battery can result in severe necrosis of the digestive tract in just 15-30mins! Whatever the type of battery your pet has ingested, it is important to CONTACT THE VET IMMEDIATELY! Do NOT try to make your pet vomit at home as the batteries can do just as much damage coming back up as they did on their way down! Keep any batteries out of the reach of your pets and carefully supervise them when presents are being unwrapped! See more

10.01.2022 11th CHRISTMAS TIME TIP! 11. Pick ‘pet safe’ Christmas plants for your home and keep any potentially dangerous plants out of the reach of curious cats and destructive dogs. Some common Christmas time plants to be cautious of include: POINSETTIA - ingestion of the milky, white sap can cause excessive drooling, irritation of the mouth, vomiting and diarrhoea. The flowers can also be toxic if consumed in large quantities. HOLLY - the Asian and European varieties contain t...oxic saponins that can cause serious gut irritation when ingested or even just chewed on. MISTLETOE - contains viscotoxins which can be fatal when ingested. The toxin can cause gut upset, breathing issues, reduced heart rate and a sudden drop in blood pressure. CHRISTMAS TREES (PINES & FIRS) - Ingesting the spiky pine needles can cause mouth and gum irritation, vomiting & diarrhoea. Keep that vacuum handy to get rid of stray needles. Additionally, the water at the base of trees should be covered to prevent pets from drinking it and potentially being exposed to leaked sap or fertilisers and pesticides used on the plants. LILLIES - all parts of Lillies (flowers, stamens & pollen) are severely toxic to cats and can cause sudden kidney failure. The most common way lillies are ingested is through cats grooming the pollen that accidentally falls on cat’s fur. Protect your pets by removing any temptations, but if you think your pet may have ingested a toxic plant, please contact the vet immediately. Ideally your pet should be seen within 2 hours of ingesting a toxin to allow the best chance of ‘removing it’ and diluting the effects. See more
