16.01.2022 It's a little hard to see I'm afraid, not sure if it's cause I took the video late in the arvo, but an update on Shakeel. Doing my best to continue bringing him along despite the rain. He has now got the walk, stop and turning down pat so decided since the very middle of my arena was dry enough to try for a trot and as you can see we got it. So as it feels wobbly and like he's drunk at the moment that is now what we will be working on.

15.01.2022 Update on Shakeel. Really liking how he is coming along. Think we are at the 7th or 8th ride now and he is just going so nicely ( except for the bit where he thought the open gate might be an excuse to stop) he is soft in the bridle allowing me to bend him correctly through the body and therefore very nicely balanced now. Time to start working on the canter now.

13.01.2022 Here is Thursday effort with shakeel. Happy with the trot work, getting better on the left canter. Starting to understand he just has to keep it and getting some steering, right canter a struggle still as he doesn't want to pick it up as he is picking up the incorrect lead and that's making it harder on him. I stopped as soon as I got right canter at the end and finished the ride there as shakeel learns best when you stop when he gets it right. Paid of big time when I rode h...im on Friday as he cantered left with almost no resistance and then picked up right canter on the second attempt and maintained right canter for a lap and a half without breaking gait. So excited, loads of praise for him and finished the ride there. Of course when it all goes right I didn't get it on video. But I wasn't going to ask him to do it again for a video with him that day because if I did I would have lost his reward and his motivation for trying harder for me when I ride him next. See more

08.01.2022 Shakeel update. This was taken on Tuesday. I am finally able to ride him again after all this wet weather. He is a bit lazy at the moment apparently thought with all his time off with the wet that he could retire. His trot work is lovely though once he gets going, actually quite impressed with just how straight he is in the trot video. The canter here well you get to see it in all its ugliness. He has learnt the canter aid and is doing it well, he just does not want to mai...ntain it (it's exhausting apparently) so is resisting when he realises that he has to keep going. So all I'm doing here is trying to get him going forward and maintain it on his own untill I ask him to trot, not he breaks to trot. He is also very left handed and he's not picking up right canter. He will on the lunge now as had a Chiro out and he canters right nicely on lunge so it will come. But this is were he currently is at and as you can see when training horses it can look quite messy at times. See more

03.01.2022 Shakeel update. Weather hasn't been helpful but when it hasn't been to wet he has been coming along very nicely. Video is from today. Walk and trot is nicely balanced now and I am introducing serpentine and circles with changes of direction to work on his bend and supplness. We also now have canter. He is starting to have the confidence to go forward and stay in the canter and now most times goes forward into canter when asked. Left canter especially so now I have the long si...de need to start working on steering in the canter so I can start to turn and keep going. Right canter he's having trouble picking up even on the lunge so we work on it when lunging and while riding we are still at the stage that if he picks up canter when asked and keeps going I'm happy. Will start trying to get the correct lead later on but still to early to try yet as I would only confuse him. Chiro might also help just in case he is sore and that's why he's not picking up right canter. Also in the walk we played a little with leg yields which he did start to understand and do. He's a clever boy. See more
