22.01.2022 I was thinking about balance today. Scrolling through some photos I took of one of our clients when we were doing a fitting, I was struck by how beautifully ba...lanced she was in the saddle, how effortless she made it look, and how easily the horse grew under her into balance as well. And this is a big young warmblood with a rider in her 60s! One of the things we absolutely know, is that pressure on a horses back, completely influences directly and indirectly how he can either use (or not use!) his back, deep core, neck, shoulders and hindquarters to move forward, stop, turn, collect, do transitions, jump and basically every little thing we want them to do. So we concentrate a lot on getting the fit of the saddle right for the horse as a primary concern, so that the pressure is as even as possible to cause the least amount of restriction. BUT! If the saddle doesnt allow the rider to sit in balance over the base of the horses wither, if they are not comfortable due to the design of the seat, twist, knee block, cantle etc then they create more pressure to the horses back in ways that not only stop the horse moving well in balance, but also create pain, discomfort and restriction in the rider! It basically all falls to pot! It doesnt matter how good a saddlefit we have done for the horse, if its not good for the rider, it still wont work and affects both horse AND rider! Every single rider body conformation is unique in the same way that a horses back shape is unique. It doesnt matter what age, fitness level, riding competency, or experience the rider has, the riders balance and comfort is CRITICAL to the horses balance and freedom of movement. Photo thoughts: Photo 1: what strikes me here is how easy the rider stays over the horses rather big movement, her weight distribution is able to stay over the base of the horses wither even though his back is uphill and you can see how round he is over his back behind the saddle. And she is able to sink her weight down through her heels without restriction through her legs or tilting her pelvis in anyway Photo 2: The horse is able to stretch out from the top of his neck with a long stride still lifting his back well. Photo 3: You can see from the balance of the seat, that the rider could easily sit perfectly centered towards the base of the wither of the horse distributing her weight evenly over the whole of the saddle. You could just imagine putting a skeleton of a pelvis on top of this seat and the seat bones would be able to stay centred and well balanced, neither tilting forward or back. That allows the riders back muscles to relax, the thighs to relax and the spine and pelvis can follow the horses movement easily without the body automatically gripping or bracing to try and stay in balance.

Even small changes can have an influence on how well their saddle fits. Ideally, it would be sensible to have your horses saddle fit checked by a qualified saddler before bringing your horse back into work. ... At the end of the fitness programme, which normally takes around eight weeks, your horse can change shape through developing muscle and weight loss, so another saddle fit check at this point is also advised. This will prevent your horse wearing an ill-fitting saddle which may cause them discomfort, rubs or pain, and help ensure theyre working at their full potential. 15.01.2022 White hairs on your horses withers or along its spine can be caused by trauma from pressure damaging the pigment producing cells in the skin, resulting in the growth of white hair. Most commonly a cause from an improper fitting saddle. It could be one or a combination of the incorrect gullet angle, not enough flocking in the panels, wrong panel shape, muscular or weight change of the horse. This is then up to me as a saddle fitter to advise or carry out the necessary changes to correct the fit of your saddle.

08.01.2022 BRIDGING:- This is when the front and rear of the saddle make contact with the horses back, but there is a gap below where the rider sits. This will put too much pressure on the horses shoulders often jamming them up and too much pressure at the rear of the saddle making it uncomfortable and often giving your horse a sore back.
