17.01.2022 Have you heard of NormaTec Recovery? The NormaTec is a compression system which can be applied to the arms, groin and legs. It uses a Pulse Massage Pattern starting in the foot, hand, or lower hip and moves upwards zone-by-zone massaging the limb and mobilizing fluid out of the extremities. Recovery and Rehabilitation for Variety of Conditions: ... 1. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness Prevention, also helps to ease ease the pain with athletes and beginner exercise programs 2. Aids with swelling/Lymphodema in the arms and lower limbs, also helpful after a long trip if you suffer from Travel Swelling in the legs 3. Pregnancy lower limb swelling Normatec Massage Equipment: $40.00 New Year Session The finer details: Normatec is pulsed wave compression technology and is relaxing. We are having success for a variety of people with swelling, pain and limited Range of Motion problems. The system has a control unit and attachments that wrap around the legs, arms and hips. It was created by a bio engineer to enhance blood flow and speed recovery. It massages and works on the fluid by 3 ways: 1. It pulses massage using dynamic compression to mimic the muscle pump of the legs and arms. Enhancing the movement of fluid and metabolites out of the limbs that cause pain. 2 Veins and Lymphatics have one way valves that prevent back flow. Normatec holds pressure in different compartments to deliver maximum pressure in each zone. So fluid is transported towards the heart and lymph nodes. 3 Distal Release . Extended pressure can be detrimental to normal circulatory flow, Sequential Pulse Technology releases the hold pressures once they are not needed to prevent back flow. 12.01.2022 ITS WOMENS HEALTH WEEK What does that mean? Its time to put yourself first and get talking about womens health! ... To get things started... For those who arent sure what is involved, weve added a clip of our physiotherapist Amy with a brief description!

12.01.2022 Our Physiotherapist Amy Lockyer is now fitting pessaries Amy has completed her training through the Women's Health Training Associates (Advanced Pelvic Organ Prolapse and Stress Urinary Incontinence Management) and is now fitting both cube and ring pessaries. What is a pessary? ... A pessary is a device that fits into the vagina to help support a prolapse of the uterus (womb), bladder and/or rectum (bottom of the bowel). A prolapse of the bladder is also known as a cystocele, and a prolapse of the rectum is known as a rectocele. A prolapse develops when one or more of the pelvic organs looses its legamentous support so that it pushes down into the vagina. Prolapse is commonly caused by childbirth, ageing, or following pelvic surgery and may take years to develop. Changes due to ageing and repeated force such as chronic coughing or straining can gradually worsen the prolapse over many years until it becomes noticeable. A prolapse may be fixed with surgery, or a pessary can be inserted to support the prolapse and relieve the symptoms. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms such as heaviness, dragging or a bulge vaginally it is definitely worth getting in contact with us to have a Women's Health review. (There is a video further down on our facebook page detailing what is involved in a Women's Health consultation). If a pessary is not something you would be comfortable with it is still worth having a review as there are many other tips/management strategies to help manage the symptoms which can be trialled prior to resorting to surgery. ** please mention your consultation is for womens health when booking 40922255

08.01.2022 Did you know that our Physiotherapists are trained in the assessment and management of Vestibular Conditions So what is the Vestibular system? The Vestibular system refers to specialised organ in the inner ear and its communication with the brain. It is primarily responsible for our sense of balance and our control of balance through movement . When this process is disrupted it can lead to vertigo, dizziness, nausea and loss of balance . It is predicted that ...every year 15-20% of the population experience these symptoms with an increasing prevalence as we get older. This is where our Physiotherapists come in. Our physiotherapists can assess both acute and chronic vestibular/dizziness symptoms and treat manage appropriately in the clinic - NO REFERRAL REQUIRED Amy has been treating vestibular conditions over the last 5 years and has completed a two-day course in England which specialised in upper neck dizziness and vestibular dysfunction whilst Callan has recently completed a two day training course in the management and treatment of vestibular issues. Call today to book an appointment on 4092-2255

08.01.2022 Lets talk a little more in depth about Women's Health & Physiotherapy One of the measurements commonly taken in a Women's Health consultation is determining the 'Levator Hiatus'. Now what is a Levator Hiatus? If you have a closer look at the image attachment you will see space between the 'arms' of the deep pelvic floor muscles - this is needed for your organs to pass through to allow for urination/defecation, and off course to allow for delivering babies! ... However this also means there is not as much support in this area to hold everything up compared to the areas lined with these deep muscles/connective tissue. The size of the Levator Hiatus naturally varies between ladies throughout the population and other factors such as general connective tissue flexibility, previous trauma and number of deliveries can all play a roll! How do we measure it? This measurement is done between the urethra and back passage. The measurement is taken in cm's and has been shown in research to have a direct correlation between the outside measurement and the area of space internally. Why might it be relevant to you? - Post childbirth (along with other testing) to determine whether there has been adequate recoil of the muscles to aid with pelvic organ etc support when returning to exercise or impact activities. - If you experience any symptoms of prolapse (i.e. heaviness/dragging/bulge sensation) or if you are at risk (forceps assisted delivery, multiple childbirths, previous trauma etc) . ***Research shows there is a direct correlation between an increased Levator Hiatus measurement and incidence of mid-high level prolapse. A 'Normal' measurement <7cm correlates to ~34% incidence of mid-high range prolapse, whereas a measurement >10cm correlates to a 91% incidence. - If you are participating in high intensity exercise or heavy exercise/work, along with other testing (even without symptoms) this measurement helps determine your risk for future pelvic floor dysfunction and depending on the findings a management plan can be put in place. If you have any Women's Health concerns or want to know more about pelvic floor please give us a call on 40922255 *** Please mention when booking if your consultation is for Women's Health concerns as the appointments are booked for one hour to allow time for questioning/assessments

04.01.2022 Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shins Splints) Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS) also known as Shin Splints is a common overuse injury defined as exercise induced pain along the inside of your lower shin bone . It is predominantly caused by repetitive stress on the lower leg during running and jumping that creates inflammation around the shin (traction periostitis). MTSS if quite common and accounts for around 10-15% or running injuries and 60% of leg pain syndrom...es. There are many risk factors in the development of MTSS. These include; running without enough shock absorption (through shoes or running technique), sudden increases in training load, inward rolling feet, increased BMI, reduced ankle range of motion, lower limb and/or core weakness and previous lower limb injuries. What can Physiotherapy do for you? The most important factor when it comes to treating MTSS is managing the excessive load placed onto the shins. This usually starts with a phase of rest following by progressive reloading of the lower limbs specific to the individual. Physiotherapy will also consist of a mix soft tissue release, dry needling (acupuncture), running retraining, activity modification and strengthening. All our Physiotherapists can treat MTSS along with a range of running and sports-based conditions. To book an appointment please call 4092-2255

03.01.2022 Sports management for ankle injuries The ankle is our major dynamic stabilising joint in the lower body. The ankle is where three bones meet - the tibia and fibula of your lower leg with the talus of your foot. These bones at the ankle joint are held together joint by ligaments and tendon. Ligaments are strong connective tissue bands that keep the bones in place, and tendons attach the muscles to bones to allow movement to occur. Ankle injuries can happen to anyone at any a...ge and are very common in the sport setting. Injuries include fractures, sprains, and strains. A fracture involves a break in one or more bones, a sprain refers to ligament damage ranging from microscopic tears to complete ruptures, and a strain refers to damage of muscles and tendons. Physiotherapists have a large role in the sports management for ankle injuries, with taping being a useful tool to assist with overall management. Sports taping has many benefits including: preventing ankle injuries such as sprains during high-risk activities, reducing the likelihood of injury aggravation, aiding in the healing of injuries, and allowing an earlier return to sport/activity. Taping can also assist our proprioception. Proprioception is our body’s ability of recognising where it is in space. We have special sensory organs in our muscles called golgi tendon organs, and these organs give us feedback about our body’s positioning. Physiotherapists are experts at training the proprioceptive network to help prevent and recover from ankle injuries. Taping is just one technique that can support and promote recovery. For more information, contact us for an appointment. Phone: 07 4092 2255 Or book online!

03.01.2022 LET’S TALK ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE! Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine tool that uses the theory of meridians and the placement of very thin needles at strategic points of the body with the aim of restoring the body’s qi flow. Western Acupuncture is not viewed as Traditional Chinese Medicine as no concepts or traditional assessment methods are adopted. Western Acupuncture practitioners aim to promote healing through stimulation of the nervous system at the local level, s...pinal cord, and brain stem level. This is done by inserting thin, sterile, disposable needles into specific areas of the body to achieve the desired effect. Acupuncture is most used to treat pain, and can help with: Migraine and tension type headaches. Chronic neck pain. Whiplash Associated Disorder. Jaw pain (Temporomandibular Disorder). Radicular arm pain. Rotator cuff dysfunction and impingement. Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis). Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylalgia). Acute and chronic lower back pain. Osteoarthritis knee pain. Tendinopathy. Fibromyalgia. Women’s health. Benefits of acupuncture: There are few side effects. It can be effectively combined with other treatments. It can control specific types of pain. It may help patients for whom pain medications are not suitable. If you are interested in more information regarding acupuncture or would like to make an appointment with one of our friendly physiotherapists, please call us on 4092 2255. Appointments available Monday-Friday and Saturday (by appointment) in Mareeba and Thursday and Friday in Atherton.

02.01.2022 Neck pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders, second only to back pain. Throughout the general and workplace populations it is predicted to effect 30-50% of people making it a huge burden on health and quality of life. The neck (aka the cervical spine) is a complex area made up of 7 vertebrae that are stacked together to form a column with our spinal cord running in the middle. Where each segment of the spine joins we have pairs of joints called facet joint...s. In between each vertebrae there is also a spongy tissue (primarily made up of water) called out intervertebral discs. These discs act as a shock absorbers as well as provide flexibility to the spine. On the outside of our spine we have strong fibrous ligaments creating another layer of support, followed by layers of muscles. Any of these structures can be affected causing neck pain. Neck pain can arise from many different sources including poor posture, sleeping awkward, sudden impact or trauma as well as many others. Our Physiotherapists are trained to assess and treat all types of neck pain. Treatment can include soft tissue release of your neck muscles, cervical spine joint mobilisations, taping, acupuncture/dry needling, heat packs and the prescription of a stretching and/or strengthening program to assist with your pain. We can assess and treat neck pain as well as a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. Call 40922255 today to book an appointment!!
