11.01.2022 Raise Your Monitor Height! The neck and shoulders are the two areas that most people, including children, identify as a location of intense pain or discomfort. In many cases, it's due to the height of the monitor, and subsequently, it's the first area we recommend people change. The average adult head weighs between 4.5 and 5 kg. A healthy, aligned spine is already perfectly designed to carry this weight. But, once you move your head forward out of alignment, the weight inc...reases placing additional strain on your neck and shoulders. For every 2.5cm the head is held forward in poor posture, an additional 4.5 kgs of weight is placed on the cervical spine. At a 15-degree angle, this weight is about 12 kgs, at 30 degrees it's 14 kgs, at 45 degrees it's 22 kgs, and at 60 degrees it's 27 kg. TechFit Tip With a desktop arrangement raising the monitor height is easy. If the design of your monitor does not include height adjustability, you can lift the height by using reams of photocopying paper, books or invest in a monitor arm. Unfortunately, laptops present some ergonomics challenges because when the screen is at a comfortable height and distance, the keyboard isn't and vice versa. When it comes to tablets, the ergonomics challenges are tenfold. If you are using a laptop or tablet for longer than an hour, I recommend you invest in a separate keyboard and mouse then add either: a stand-alone monitor, or laptop/tablet raiser.
