22.01.2022 Important to be aware of for your digital content. It’s extra work, yes, but there are more and more tools available these days to be able to do this.



20.01.2022 I was going to write something about this myself -- I DO think there are some very good reasons that you should consider whether or not starting a podcast is right for you now* but actually those always apply, so it's not really whether or not to start a podcast during a pandemic, it's just whether or not to start a podcast -- but my friend and mentor Karly Nimmo put it perfectly so I'll just share with you what she wrote instead: "This has been done before. It’s a bit unor...iginal and meh to me. But every time I get tagged in one of these ‘please, for the love of god, don’t start a podcast’ type posts, I’m half ‘yawn’ and half concerned. I’m not personally triggered by it. It’s a bunch of traditional media peeps, with more privilege than most, telling the regular Australian to shut the fuck up. And yeah, it’s meant to be a joke. It’s not very funny. Its bland and unoriginal. But it’s also potentially damaging. Everyone is entitled to the same amount of space. Everyone is entitled to speak. Everyone is entitled to share their story. And everyone’s voice and story is valid. That’s what makes podcasting so magical! It’s diverse and everyone can be represented. There’s a low barrier to entry. It’s now accessible to everyone. To say that no one wants to hear you is bullshit. There’s always someone who needs to hear what you’ve got to say. But this story about ‘who am I to start a podcast’ is the biggest thing getting in the way of most of the people I work with. This video is just reinforcing that. And that is the one little thing that does bother me about this. You don’t need to be a celebrity to be a podcaster. So what if everyone has a podcast? If you wanna start a podcast, start a fucking podcast. But before you do... please get intentional about it. Know why you’re doing it. And make it enjoyable to listen to. Don’t just throw podcasting on your ‘to do’ list because it’s another thing you think you ‘should’ do. If you’re just doing it because you think you should, then I agree with these people... shut the fuck up. And if you want help sticking it to these fuckers by starting your own show, say the word. I got you." Amen. *(i.e. if you're struggling just to get through the day, if you're already feeling mighty overwhelmed and if you think you need a podcast to be avoid FOMO - then a podcast won't solve those problems so don't do it for those reasons, and maybe reach out to get help with those things first -- podcasting will be here when you're better/less overwhelmed)

06.01.2022 My Self-Care For Teachers podcast, Teacher Wellbeing, is 3 years old today! Pretty proud of this milestone. Consistency and persistence are the two key attributes you need to be a podcaster. Everything else you can learn or outsource. I don’t podcast every week, I do seasons, because I know what is sustainable for me to be able to be consistent. ... It’s been a bit of a roller coaster but I haven’t given up, because I’m determined and because I’m persistent. Season 6 crowdfunder is coming soon, to be followed (hopefully!) by Season 6 itself - watch this space

03.01.2022 A a personal story about why I love podcasts so much, and why I know there is great opportunity for you to serve your audience in this coronavirus crisis. I truly believe that creating educational and helpful content for your audience is more important now more than ever. With many people in self-isolation and more still to end up in isolation in coming weeks, they are turning to the internet for entertainment and inspiration, comfort and connection. While blogs and videos ar...e certainly able to fulfil this need, podcasts are powerful and special, especially for those who are unwell. My love affair with podcasts began over a decade ago, when I had a series of health challenges including Glandular Fever, Whooping Cough and Thyroid Cancer that kept me in a state of semi-self-isolation for about 3 years. I also had chronic fatigue syndrome and was sometimes too exhausted and unwell to keep my eyes open to read or watch TV. But my mind was awake and alert and I was desperate for distraction and diversion. I found podcasts and they not only distracted me, but comforted me, entertained me and connected me to the outside world, when in reality I was often confined to my house--> just like people are, or are about to be, because of coronavirus. Know this: your podcast is a community service at this time. Your listeners need your voice in their life. They will be looking for entertainment and information, yes, but also connection, and podcasts are a brilliant way to build deeper connections with your audience. By and large, podcast listeners care a lot about the podcasters they subscribe to, so they would probably love to hear updates from you and how you are applying your expertise in this incredible time in human history. In some cases they will be looking for a break from the constant coronavirus news and a sense of normalcy, and that’s where the evergreen content comes in too. Afterwards, when this is all over, your audience will remember your content. They will remember your voice and the connection it gave them with others in a time when isolation and disconnection was taking over. Maya Angelous said People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. I hope that is something you can remember and apply in all of your communications at this time, in podcasts and in life. It’s going to be a tough time ahead but let’s maintain our kindness and connection to one another even amidst the social distancing. #flattenthecurve #stayhomeandlistentopodcasts
