23.01.2022 We will be making a special delivery to the Magdalene Centre this week, in support of their Christmas Appeal. We hope this puts some smiles on the faces of disadvantaged families over Christmas. Thank you to all our team members for their support in getting these goodies together!
23.01.2022 A NYC Marathon training update from Kim Bigg... Less than a week to go before the marathon, and final major run completed on Sunday in Adelaide (16km). Just a small run (10km Tuesday) and then on to new York. The training for the marathon seems to have gone on forever, but it has been mostly enjoyable, and I am now ready to get on the plane and head over to NYC. As the last of the Perks Group (and possibly the whole group) to fly over to NYC, I cant wait to get over there and start acclimatising. My IPhone tells me it will be 17 degrees and sunny for the marathon on Sunday, which is nearly perfect (not that IPhone weather is to be trusted!). See everyone over there!
21.01.2022 Every Friday during summer, then each first Friday of the month following, Perks staff wear casual clothes and raise money for numerous charities. Last Fridays casual day held particular importance to Perks, with funds raised going towards the Ryan Tarca Fundraiser.Ryan has tested positive to a type of Familial Amyloidotic Polyneuropathy which is a very rare hereditary neurodegenerative disease that can appear in people between the ages of 20-50 years and progresses rapidly... with the degeneration of cells. Currently, Ryan is the only known person to have this disease in the world and there is unfortunately no cure. At such a young age Ryan is already starting to show symptoms in his hands. The aim of this fundraiser is to get Ryan to London to meet with a specialist to have tests and assist with research in the hope that there is some sort of remedy or treatment to delay the onset of symptoms. Perks is not only dedicated to raising funds to this particular cause but is also looking to help spread the word! For more information please visit Ryans fundraising page. www.gofundme.com/get-tarcs-to-london-and-back

13.01.2022 A NYC Marathon training update from CK Lim... With just over two weeks to go before the New York marathon in November, it is hard to believe how quickly the 8 months since I was chosen by Perks to run the marathon has passed. In these 8 months, I can confidently say that I have ran more kilometres that I ever have in my entire life*. My perception of a short run has gone from a 2 kilometre run to a 10 kilometre run, and I have discovered more of Adelaide than I would have pr...eviously! In terms of the training, it has been very difficult trying to stick with the training plan, but I believe I have put in my best effort to date. Last Saturday I ran 34 kilometres (plus 1 km to the car) at the Operation Flinders Challenge, my longest run to date. Run started in North Adelaide and headed up towards the hills along Linear Park. It was an increasingly hot and humid morning, the track had plenty of slopes but was shaded most of the way. With the rest of the marathon runners at the same event, I was motivated to push on and the first 18 kilometres was done before I knew it. At the 18 km mark, I caught up with the other runners and had a bit to eat. I get hungry on these long runs and would often have to look for a food source (bananas from Coles being the most common!), so it was handy having a refuel station at this stage. I even found some tiny teddies which I could not resist. I took the same path back and pushed on until the 26 kilometre mark when I felt like I had hit a wall. My legs and body had had enough. The last 8 kilometres would be the most difficult bit of running I have had to date. The scariest part of the run was knowing that in 3 weeks time I will be adding another 7 kilometres to this distance. The journey to date has been enjoyable especially fundraising $3,000 for a good cause and knowing that I will be participating in one of the biggest marathon events. I am looking forward to the big day and wearing that medal upon completion! They can try to get me to take it off at the airport on the way home but I wont go down without a fight! *When looking solely at running as an sporting activity for those of you questioning this statement!
13.01.2022 Yesterday one of our 30 NYC Marathon Runners, Katrina Goodwin, completed a 34km training run. Her update follows... "Yesterday I did the longest run I will do as part of my training for the marathon 34kms! This was the toughest run Ive ever done and not just because of the distance. I thought it would be interesting to see how big of a 'square' 34kms would be around Adelaide (see picture of map). What I didnt really consider was:- it was all major roads with lots of side ...street crossings where I had to really look out for cars, and there was lots of stopping and starting with traffic light crossings making it just that bit harder to start running again. Add to this that I forgot my ipod and therefore had nothing to distract me from thinking about what I was doing, all equals one nightmarish run! Mentally, I lost it and at 30km gave up. But after refueling and walking for 1.5km I started running again and managed to run the rest of the way even adding 1km (making the total route 35km) to make up for some of what I had walked. I know that on marathon day it won't be this hard. For starters I won't have to worry about cars or traffic lights and there will be 2million people out there to cheer me on! Keeping that in mind gets me through each run. Thankfully there's only 1 more long run to go - the Operation Flinders Challenge on Saturday, 10 October." See more

05.01.2022 A NYC Marathon training update from Jenny Dunn... Wow - what a journey. So excited/ nervous that it's only 2 weeks from the big day. All up, it will be 8 months of training learning how to run distance and getting in the required training. I've gone from being able to run 3km at the start to my longest run to date of 30km. Along the way, there has been one 10km festival which really kicked off my training and I've finished two half marathons - something I never thought was p...reviously possible. I've been in Amercia for the last two weeks finishing off my training and beginning my taper. Arkansas in the first week was really hot and humid which was quite challenging. It's still been hot this past week in Louisiana but at least not as humid! In Arkansas, I spent the week running around my college - the University of Arkansas at Monticello. My picture is standing in front of the softball field - my team and I spent a lot of time on that field in college! I'm slowly making my way to New York staying with my college friends which has been a great way to end my training. Plus, with all the calories burnt on my runs, I can still enjoy great American food - we've been hitting up all my favourite places! This week, I head to Dallas for the week to spend time with another friend and continuing to taper, before heading to NYC to meet the rest of the group. I can't wait to experience everything NYC and participating in this iconic marathon has to offer. It's been such a hard road to get here and I've had such great support from family, friends, Perks, the Southern Running Group and Leading Edge Physiotherapy who have kept my body on track with Physio, Pilates and Podiatry. Hopefully the next photo you see of me is a finishers photo with the Perks Foundation crew!
04.01.2022 A NYC Marathon training update from Belinda Butler, who is preparing for the upcoming Operation Flinders challenge (34km).... "Less than 4 weeks to go until the New York Marathon and one big milestone 34km run being the Operation Flinders challenge, after that I will start to taper off my runs in preparation for the big one. Being a first-timer I have taken on board lots of advice since I started running in February and I have learnt that there are a lot of considerations as... you increase your distance. One key piece of advice I have been given is dont try anything new on race day. Try clothes, shoes, pacing, and nutrition on your training runs. Good sound advice which has lead me to experiment with the various energy gels on the market. One I recently tried left such a dry and nasty taste in my mouth that I really found it hard to focus on the job at hand. Another consideration is how you fuel your runs. What you eat and drink the night before and the morning of can really make a difference. My longest run to date has been 29km and I burned over 1,600 calories.no wonder Im eating at a lot more than normal. Since I started running back in February I have run over 600kms which blows my mind!! This week I ran over 40kms across 3 runs and I am now starting to find the long runs a tad boringover 3 hours running on my own, my mind drifts from one thought to another. My running beats are not even having the desired effect. I am now just looking forward to completing the race of a lifetime! On another note, I am so pumped and relieved to have recently accomplished one of my associated goals. I have raised over $3,000 for the Perks Foundation on behalf of Operation Flinders. I am so glad Ive had the opportunity to add meaning to my kilometres by giving back to the local community."
