14.01.2022 What is a Beauty Therapist and a Dermal Clinician? Martin Pakula and the Andrews Government need to clearly understand the differences in the aesthetic and beau...ty industries. There seems to be a lack of understanding regarding what qualification and education of those who work in aesthetic/beauty clinics and salons and I applaud Matt Bach for taking the initiative to actually understand the industry. The word beauty parlour and beautician has been thrown around by the government, without truely understanding the education and training undertaken in the industry. Beauticians with a formal qualification of Certificate 3, have formal training only in nails, waxing, tanning and retail. Beauty Therapists hold a Diploma of Beauty Therapy and are formally trained in performing various facials and massage and study anatomy & physiology and basic cosmetic chemistry. They are taught infection control, as well as sanitisation and disinfection protocols and procedures. They are trained how to utilise an autoclave, since they come into contact with bodily fluids. Many beauty therapists have committed themselves to extensive post-graduate training and education, while others continue with formal education in dermal therapies. Dermal Therapists hold an Advanced Diploma of Cosmetic Dermal Science which is an undergraduate dermal therapy course. The curriculum covers the knowledge and skills required to perform a range of dermal therapy procedures within a cosmetic medical context. Dermal Clinicians have engaged in further studies at a university level and achieved a Degree qualification such as the Bachelor of Health Science (Dermal Therapies). Dermal Clinicians have extensive training in skin anatomy & physiology, skin conditions, cosmetic chemistry and are trained to analyse and treat skin through a variety of advanced techniques. Working alongside doctors specialising in cosmetic surgical and non-surgical treatments, they have advanced training in laser, IPL, skin peels, photo rejuvenation, cosmetic tattooing, cosmetic chemistry and micro needling. So next time you call a beauty therapist or dermal clinician a beautician, please understand that can be upsetting and actually feel like you’re insulting our dedication to education.
