24.01.2022 My latest instillation (sic) focuses on aligning our lives and work with our personal values, and the hope of leaving a lasting positive impact on the world. Wisdom that seems to erupt from nature, like blossoms on a sunny spring morning. Elemental. Eternal. Ephemeral.

23.01.2022 The existing play space at this kindergarten provided was aged, and the committee's vision was to include a greater range of play opportunities. The Concept Plan included new ideas for loose materials play, a range of natural materials, plants and group play spaces. Stage 1 of implementation has been the renovated sandpit with hand water pump and water play path

22.01.2022 I picked up a copy of the next bible of sustainable urban living , hot off the presses prior to its launch at the Sustainable Living Festival on the weekend. Highly recommend. Holmgren remains at the forefront of intelligent, practical responses to the challenges of our times. #retrosuburbia #melliodora #SLF #Holmgren

20.01.2022 I recently enjoyed seeing how this project has matured since I designed it in 2012 when the building was renovated - it's the NDIS building at 170 Lt Malop St in Geelong. Planting design to complement the architecture.

19.01.2022 As much as I see this years fire season as a political tipping point (finally) on action on climate change, I equally hope that we are brought to a new acknowledgement of the cultural practices that allowed humans to thrive in this landscape for 60,000 years.

17.01.2022 Central Courtyard (Building P) at Deakin University Burwood campus, now at practical completion. Sustainable design featuring local and native plants, and a rock-lined swale that diverts stormwater from the overhead walkway to provide passive irrigation to the shady fern-filled gardens underneath!

16.01.2022 The latest item in urban furniture - vehicle barriers in the Bourke St Mall and Federation Square that were installed early this morning. Although it's very sad that they are necessary, how can these new urban elements contribute to making our streetscapes MORE pedestrian-oriented? Handy seats, yes, and they look hefty enough to stop a big vehicle, what else could they do? While I was loitering and watching and chatting a few good ideas came up... Paint them as dice. (How s...ymbolic!) Plant trees in them. A place to write messages of love and respect. Kate, Gav (in the fab leather jacket) and I offered our thoughts) Lots of people took advantage of them as a seat, and they do offer something very positive and unique in that they are close enough together to have a conversation. What's your ideas? See more

15.01.2022 Lovely surface patterning at GPTs Crown St Wollongong shopping centre. Nice

12.01.2022 Another project at Deakin Universitys Burwood campus completed just in time for the new academic year. This space carefully manages the amount of sunlight it gets to provide grassy mounds to relax on in the sun, as well as cool shady temperate rainforest areas full of palms and ferns.

10.01.2022 Checking out progress on a courtyard revamp designed for Deakin Uni at Waurn ponds campus. This little space will inspire collaboration and creativity using beehive imagery, but it's still a work in progress!

10.01.2022 A friends mothers advice for happy healthy children rings true in todays world of screens.

09.01.2022 This little (5ha...but most of that is vertical acreage!) park in the shadows of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a lively example of that rarest of urban spaces, the public space that is curated and managed by the local community. It is Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden and it has been created over the 20 years since the death of her husband by Wendy and her crew of volunteers. Replacing infestations of lantana and blackberry she has created a space for quiet reflection and enjoyment of nature. I love places like this that demonstrate a sense of custodianship for the earth, a vision that often speaks to shared values within our communities and gives license to unique expressions of creativity. We could do well to facilitate leadership like this whenever the opportunity arises, and seek ways to link communities and landscapes.

08.01.2022 In the aftermath of a bushfire you can learn some interesting things about the cultural history of a site. Without the vegetation and leaf litter any digging or earthworks that have occurred are made plainly visible. Drainage lines, tracks, mines and long-forgotten buildings can be traced during this window of opportunity before the dry sclerophyl vegetation bursts back to life, sometimes quite dense with shrubs and fast growing pioneer plants. It's s good opportunity to visit the fire grounds and observe the way the bush is adapted to, and encourages, fire.

08.01.2022 Thanks to the folk at Warrnambool Community Garden who provided a lovely testimonial recently.. Warrnambool Community Garden employed Perry Mills to draw together our ideas for the old quarry on our site. We asked him to produce a master plan with an implementation schedule and initial costing. We wanted something that was inspiring, practical, low maintenance and achievable that could also be staged as opportunities arose for us as volunteers to find funding for the v...arious elements of the project. We chose Perry from a field of candidates who expressed interest. He proved to be just exactly the right person for us and we loved the process he took us through, walking with our team on site, talking through our ideas and drawing up an initial plan for our comments in situ. Hes a great communicator, nothing was too much trouble and he really understood our community organisation culture and the opportunities and constraints that go with that. Weve been able to use his master plan to attract funds for the preliminary work and then we were lucky to receive a grant last year through the state government Pick My Project Grants and so we are now well on the road to taking the project to the next level of bringing Perry's master plan to fruition. Were looking forward to having an inspiring opening event at Winter Solstice next year and we hope Perry will be a guest of honour! Julie Eagles, Deputy Convenor, Warrnambool Community Garden

07.01.2022 This is the most inspirational piece of architecture that I have seen recently, and this blog post provides fascinating exploration of the design ideas behind it!

07.01.2022 Last year the Surf Coast Shire asked us to design some visitor facilities at three parks along the coast, including this one at the Lions Park in Anglesea. Constructed of Australian hardwood timbers with a raked skillion roof, it is elevated above the flood level of the Angleasea River complementing the adjacent playground and sound shell. 07.01.2022 Plants with calming qualities will be featured in this new therapy garden by Andrew Laidlaw.

06.01.2022 Its great to see that planning for bicycles in Geelong is well-advanced, with Copenhagen lanes proposed for a number of central streets - perhaps in 10-20 years Geelong will have leapfrogged Melbourne as a bicycle-friendly city?

06.01.2022 This playground at a Geelong childcare centre was designed for the particular needs of children on the ASD spectrum. It focuses on key senses that are affected - tactile (the sense of touch), vestibular (the sense of movement and gravity), and proprioceptive (the sense of how our body worksmuscle and joint information). It also uses a sequential layout that provides a therapeutic play environment in an increasingly complex sequence allowing the individual to manage the degree and type of sensory stimulation.

06.01.2022 We have been working with the Surf Coast Shire to prepare concept plans for a new outdoor stage for the Jan Juc community, and are pleased to release these images of what it may look like. For this project we partnered with local sculptor and artist Mark Trinham, who has designed a beautiful stage arch that celebrates the threatened Bellarine Yellow Gums that are onsite. The project is being promoted by Jan Juc Live, a small group of locals who are keen to give local artists ...an opportunity to get performance experience. The Bob Pettitt Reserve has hosted informal Christmas Carols for a number of years, and the vision is to make the facility easy for community groups to use. Environmental and visual sensitivity and respect for the local community has guided the design concept, which is supported by The Bonnie Upwelling Choir, Bonnie Bambinis, Surf Coast Old Time Street Orchestra, Sun Bear Childrens Festival Jan Juc Kindergarten and Bellbrae Ukelele Group. Jan Juc Live have organised a Fun Day and Listening Post at Bob Pettitt Reserve this Sunday 1-4pm with music and performances. Find out more at https://www.facebook.com/janjuclive/ See more

06.01.2022 Always a pleasure and an inspiration visiting Lyle Fillippes nursery and display gardens in Lara - an prehistoric vision slowly maturing at gargantuan scale, with fascinating detail by an artist of quirky plant combinations. I recommend it to all my clients and students.

05.01.2022 Five years since this little park was opened, I drove past this week and it is maturing nicely. #geelongcity #pocketparks #makinggeelonggreater #revitalisingcentralgeelong

04.01.2022 Kicking off the year with a 'good-news' story - a real 'grass roots' action story!

04.01.2022 We are pleased that this project is ready for public comment, after preparing concepts for it last year. Fully funded and ready to roll out this year, it will host the talented locals of Jan Juc for many years! #landscapearchitecture #surfcoastcommunity #janjuc #bobpettitreserve #performancespace #janjuclive #zenarchitects #surfcoastshire

03.01.2022 Will this be the location for Geelong's highest rooftop garden? With my Masters of Landscape Architecture students I recently got to check out the rooftop of the renovated T & G building, Geelongs most iconic heritage building, which has recently been bought by Deakin University and beautifully renovated as student apartments. My students are designing roof top gardens for a number of buildings in the central city area, as part of Future Proofing Geelong's Green Roof competition. All the entries will be on display at the new library from 2nd December.

01.01.2022 Images created for a current project in Springvale - two 6-storey residential towers. The concept for central courtyard is to install polycarbonate cylinders filled with water, bubbles and light.

01.01.2022 Slater Square, South Geelong. I designed this public space in South Geelong a number of years ago, for the Victorian government's urban renewal agency Places Victoria. It uses a range of Christopher Alexander's timeless design 'patterns' - Green Streets, Raised Walks, Connected Play, High Places and Seat Spots and many others - to create a small urban pocket park with a variety of functions and flexibility of interpretation and use. Buildings are now enclosing it and it is... beginning to function, as the frontages onto it become more active. Client: Places Victoria Consultant: CPG Landscape Contractor: Ocean Road Landscaping
