Although a balanced diet requires a balanced consumption of micro and macro nutrients including good sources of carbohydrates for energy and fats, the PROTEIN LEVERAGE HYPOTHESIS speculates that we are driven to consume food until we meet our minimum protein or amino acid needs. This means that if we don’t consume adequate protein we will overconsume foods high in carbohydrates and/or fats in a subconscious effort to obtain those critical amino acids. Refer to the Australian daily protein recommendations to ensure you select and consume sufficient protein.
