21.01.2022 The Kettlebell Deadlift offers the perfect introduction to kettlebell exercises. This movement allows you to functionally train the body to lift heavy objects from the floor using the power of the legs, glutes, back and abdominal muscles. Start with your feet around shoulder width apart and the kettlebell in line with your ankles. Squat* down, pushing the hips backwards, maintaining a flat back* as you reach to grip the kettlebell. Keep your head up*, press your ch...est forwards and pull your shoulders down your back. Extend your hips and knees, standing tall and locking your legs out by pressing back through the knee. Return the kettle bell to the floor, maintain the same path as you lifted it. Reset, focusing on keeping a straight back, chest up, shoulders down, and repeat. *We recognise that people will often move differently in response to the same cues. We encourage you to work with your personal trainer at Personal Best, where we are less about trying to correct varying movement patterns, than we are about finding a way to make it work for you.



20.01.2022 The Kettlebell Swing is a highly effective full body exercise. The swing targets your glutes, hamstrings, thighs, abdominals and many stabilising muscles in your shoulders and back. It involves moving the kettle bell in a pendulum motion and has the potential to boost muscular endurance, power and aerobic capacity. A ‘big bang for your buck’ exercise. Here’s how its done:... Begin with your feet around shoulder width apart, the kettlebell placed centred between your ankles. Grip the bell, keeping your chest up and back straight. Your arms should remain straight and simply act as levers during the entire movement. Forcefully extend your knees and hips to allow the bell to swing forwards and upwards. Breathe out at the top of the swing and breathe in as the kettlebell begins to descend. Allow the bell to fall in the same path that it rose by hinging at the hips. The bell should be at the bottom of the swing for as little time as possible, so as it reaches that point, immediately extend your hips and knees to repeat the movement. Working with a personal trainer to explore different breathing patterns and movement cues is an important aspect of ensuring the movement is individualised for you and what you want to achieve. Ask your personal trainer how you can incorporate the kettlebell swing into your program.

18.01.2022 The Single Hand Kettlebell Swing is an alternative to the standard kettlebell swing we talked about earlier this week. It targets much of the same muscles as the standard swing; glutes, hamstrings, thighs, abdominals and many stabilising muscles in your shoulders and back. The unilateral nature of the exercise provides a rotational element for the core muscles to stabilise. Begin with your feet around shoulder width apart, the kettlebell (KB) placed centred slightly forw...ards of your feet. Grip the KB with one hand, keeping your chest up and back straight. Allow the KB to swing back beneath you, swinging your free arm backwards and driving the hips backwards and upwards to balance the movement and engage stabilising muscles of the hips and back. Drive the hips and knees forwards at the same time as the kettlebell and swing the free arm forwards and upwards. Bring your free hand to meet the kettlebell as it rises to its peak position in the swing. Allow the KB to fall in the same path that it rose by hinging at the hips, sending your free arm backwards once again. The Single Hand Kettle Bell Swing is an advanced movement, so it is important that you seek professional guidance to ensure you complete the movement safely and effectively.
