25.01.2022 Elephant Rocks One of the most spectacular places for a swim on Western Australia's stunning south coast. Can you spot me? My seagull friend? Tag someone you want to go here with Lying over 400km south east of Perth, the distances to be covered in WA are significant, but they are worth every minute of the #roadtrip.... 24.01.2022 Zunzuncito Bee Hummingbird Fact Check: The Smallest Bird in the World Posts have been circulating for a while now with a photo of a teeny tiny- and very cute, Chickadee in a hand. It's #fakenews, "photoshopped". The smallest bird in the world is actually this, the #Zunzuncito or #beehummingbird. They are found only in Cuba and while these shots are not as good as I'd hoped to achieve, (probably why I haven't posted them sooner) these birds were one of my main reasons for ...visiting #Cuba. They are classed as "near threatened" and I was fortunate to see them at all. These images were taken at a focal length of 400mm. The Zunzuncito/ Bee Hummingbird measures 5-6cm in length and weighs up to 2 grams (by contrast, the actual Chickadee found in North America is approximately 5 times the weight and twice the size). With a heart rate that can reach 1260 beats per minute and wing beat of 80 per SECOND, they can visit up to 1500 flowers per day to supply their high metabolic rate with enough nectar to survive. I'll put the fake post in the comments so that you can see the difference and hopefully people might reconsider the integrity of their information sources :)
23.01.2022 The Pinnacle I was recently asked to do a landscape print commission as an engagement gift for a couple who had their proposal at The Pinnacle Lookout in Orange, NSW. I opted for an aerial perspective for the client. This was already one of my favourite places in the region, but it is even more spectacular from the air than I'd imagined.
23.01.2022 Sturt's Desert Pea The iconic Australian wildflower can be found growing in the arid central and north-western regions of Australia, often after heavy ephemeral rainfall. It is the state emblem of South Australia. The Aboriginal people call it the "Flower of Blood" and the dreamtime story is one of tragedy. "An archetypal story of doomed love, a young couple elope against the wishes of their kin (she is already betrothed to another), leaving the woman’s tribe to live wit...h the man’s people far away. The woman eventually bears a child, a son whom the couple love dearly. The woman has a gift for channelling the songs of the spirits, and would often sing their words. One day they warn of impending danger and also of immortality for their son. The woman warns her husband but he is too complacent, disregarding the message as foolishness. Shortly afterwards, in the dark of night, the woman’s former betrothed sneaks upon them and he and his men slaughter them all man, woman and child. Their blood stains the soil and the boy’s body is transformed into the first Sturt’s Desert Pea his immortal life is begun. A season later, the man returns to gloat over the bones and finds instead the flowers growing abundantly. The Great Spirit, in retribution, sends down a bolt of lightning, killing him instantly and transforming his body into a rock, which is shattered into millions of pieces. The tears of the grief-stricken song spirits dry and turn to salt, causing the salinity of the lakes in that region." The dreamtime story above is found in the 1973 book The Dreamtime, by Charles P Mountford and Ainslie Roberts.
23.01.2022 || Human : Nature || Do you know what this is? Photo in comments for some context. Aerial photography gives a new perspective on our global impact as humans. Creating extreme, controlled #polyculture for our own benefit is a complex issue: it maximises efficiency of land use, but blocks natural #biodiversity. How do you feel about it? Tell me below. It sure makes for interesting photography...... Australia.com #australia #thisisWA
22.01.2022 Morning Glow A bitterly cold wake-up belies the warmth of this image. It's not often I make the effort to hike out and capture the sunrise (I'm more of a sunset photographer ). But the bone chill was absolutely worth it to be out shooting again. #visitnsw #seeaustralia #orange360
22.01.2022 Camouflage Evolution. The perfect camouflage of the Western Pilbara Spiny-Tailed Skink. First documented in 2011, this lizard bears live young and is found only in the Western Pilbara region of north-west Australia.

14.01.2022 Aerial Abstract I The first of a series of abstract aerial images. Any suggestions for a title? Along with the patterns created, I was especially taken by the colours of the raw, exposed, worked earth.

11.01.2022 I Love a Sunburnt Country This wonderful, expansive and diverse land on which we are so fortunate to live. Sunset captured in the Pilbara region of north-western Australia. Australia.com #lestweforget #thisisWA... My Country, by Dorothy Mackellar, 1908. The love of field and coppice Of green and shaded lanes, Of ordered woods and gardens Is running in your veins. Strong love of grey-blue distance, Brown streams and soft, dim skies I know, but cannot share it, My love is otherwise. I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of droughts and flooding rains. I love her far horizons, I love her jewel-sea, Her beauty and her terror The wide brown land for me! The stark white ring-barked forests, All tragic to the moon, The sapphire-misted mountains, The hot gold hush of noon, Green tangle of the brushes Where lithe lianas coil, And orchids deck the tree-tops, And ferns the warm dark soil. Core of my heart, my country! Her pitiless blue sky, When, sick at heart, around us We see the cattle die But then the grey clouds gather, And we can bless again The drumming of an army, The steady soaking rain. Core of my heart, my country! Land of the rainbow gold, For flood and fire and famine She pays us back threefold. Over the thirsty paddocks, Watch, after many days, The filmy veil of greenness That thickens as we gaze ... An opal-hearted country, A wilful, lavish land All you who have not loved her, You will not understand though Earth holds many splendours, Wherever I may die, I know to what brown country My homing thoughts will fly.
