23.01.2022 Did you know that patting your pet bird below the shoulders is not recommended? Patting below this region will make your bird think that you are their ‘brooding partner’ which can lead to unwanted behavioural and reproductive behaviour.

21.01.2022 PET OF THE WEEK Goes to 16wk old staffy puppy "PO" After a shaky start involving a brief hospital stay from chewing on a Dessert Rose (these plants are toxic to cats and dogs), he then re-visited our clinic where he bravely recieved his puppy vaccine and heartworm injection from Dr Brodie. More recently, Po (after sleeping away his first lesson) graduated from our Puppy Preschool class. Well done Po!

18.01.2022 With the weather warming up we thought we'd share some info on heat stress in pets. Heat stress can be as mild as excessive panting and drooling but can be severe enough to cause heat stroke. Symptoms of heat stroke include vomiting, diarrhoea (sometimes with blood), collapse, kidney failure, seizures and death. Always make sure your pet has access to shade and clean cool water. It can help to have a second water supply in case the first is knocked over.... Exercise in the cooler parts of the day, usually 5:30 to 7:00 am and pm, avoid hot sand, bitumen and concrete. If walking in the dark, make sure you and your pet are wearing safety reflectors. Brachycephalic (short-nosed) dogs such as pugs, bulldogs and bullmastiffs are at greater risk of heat stress. Other factors include the very young, the very old, pets with thick coats and dark coloured fur. Travelling wih pets - NEVER leave your pet in the car , even in the shade or with the window cracked. - if your dog travels in the ute tray provide shade and offer water regularly. - the trays of utes often get extremely hot, especially if they have black liners. Both cats and dogs may appreciate frozen treats , fresh fruit such as watermelon (no grapes!) and ice blocks made of weak chicken or beef broth. If you think your pet is showing signs of heat stroke, start by getting them into the shade and wetting them down and call the clincic for further advice.

15.01.2022 Happy Father's Day

13.01.2022 Due to an increase in the number of tick cases we have seen this month, we thought an update on tick paralysis might be of use to our clients. It takes 3 days after a paralysis tick attaches to your pet for symptoms to start to appear. These symptoms include wobbly back legs, change of bark, refusing food and vomiting. ... It takes only one female paralysis tick to cause severe illness and death in a dog or cat. Treatment of tick paralysis requires a tick antiserum and often days of hospitalisation if pets are to recover. A combination of daily tick searches and an effective preventative product are the best way to reduce the risk of tick paralysis in your pet.
