24.01.2022 FREE!... For those around Belmont with chooks maybe. There's only so much green stuff you can eat, so I've just placed a heap of Rainbow Chard (coloured Silverbeet) on top of the bin just near the front door of the shop. First in best dressed. Cheers! ... Hayden.

21.01.2022 Skretting Spectra 7mm - Trout Finishing Food. Spectra contains Carotenoids - Naturally occurring pigments that wild fish derive from eating crustaceans, algae etc. Carotenoids are what give the flesh that wonderful orange-pink colouring, but more importantly, are beneficial antioxidants that help keep the fish, and ultimately you, healthier. Limited Stock! - We only order a limited amount of the Spectra about midway through the Trout season, so we aren't left holding stock at the end of the season and trying to keep it fresh until next year... Stock is getting low and once it's gone we won't have any more in until next winter... Grab your's now!... Available in 2.5kg, 4kg & 20kg... https://perthaquaponics.com.au/Spectra

08.01.2022 All The Hype About Mechanical Filtration... It's just that... Hype... For the average backyard aquaponic grower with a well designed, sensibly stocked system at least. The nice healthy white root systems in these pics belong to a couple of Revolution Red Lettuce (four in fact, I usually double plant fancy lettuce varieties). They were 5 weeks in a system that is over 2.5 years old, with no mechanical filtration removing fish waste solids. The solids get pumped up to the grow... beds where worms, enzymes, bacteria, beneficial fungi etc can break them down and release all the valuable mineral nutrients locked up within them. There are some worm castings evident in the top 50mm or so of the root systems. That's all quality nutrient from the fish waste that settles in the bottom of the grow bed. Worms will go down into well oxygenated water in search of a feed, they consume the fish waste then bring the nutrients back up to the top 50mm dry (moist) layer above the maximum water level in the grow bed (standpipe height) and deposit them in among the plants root systems, where they nest and lay their eggs. A well designed, sensibly stocked aquaponic system can run for many years before the grow beds require cleaning out, with many achieving 5, 6, even 7 years... Don't believe me?... If you scroll back down our timeline, or look through our pics, back to May 2018, you'll see a post where I cleared out and removed the previous IBC display system from the shop. Not because it needed cleaning out, but because it was initially intended to be a temporary display, ie: 12-18 months only, and was built accordingly, so after 5.5 years it was falling apart and looked very average as a shop display. You'll see from the pics back then, the grow bed had very little waste build up in the bottom of it and it definitely wasn't anaerobic after 5.5 years of continuous operation, during which there were periods where it was stocked to it's maximum safe stocking capacity. Food for thought. Cheers! Hayden.

08.01.2022 Introduction-to-Aquaponics Workshop - Sat Sept 5th This workshop has been organised for a private group, but they have kindly allowed me to make a limited number of spaces available to the public. The location is in Warwick and the workshop will run from 9am to 3.30-ish. For more details or to book your place, please give me a call at the shop on (08) 9478 1211, between 10am and 5pm weekdays.
