A great weekend of tanto dori, Idori, kata training was had under Sensei's expert guidance. Thanks to Sensei Tran for his great training and company over the last few days. As usual it was great to catch up with our Academy family from over east. I'm sure everyone in Melbourne is looking forward to a great week of training.

04.01.2022 I am nice until you give me a reason not to be! There is no reason to go around being rude and nasty to the people around you. I see too many martial artists wh...o always seem to have a scowl on their face. It is almost as if they are afraid that smiling and being nice to people makes them look weak. It doesn't. The fact is, if you are secure about your abilities and skills as a martial artist and a warrior, you don't have to go around looking mean and tough. When you know what you can do and you have confidence in your abilities, you are free to smile and be nice to everyone, until it is time to not be nice. Whenever you see a guy who constantly scowls and tries to look and act tough, you can be pretty sure that it is an act. Skilled guys do not worry about impressing everyone around them. They are simply content knowing that their skills are there should they need them. This doesn't mean that tough guys never look tough - many times they do. I can see the warrior gaze in those who and been there and done that, from across the room. The warrior spirit is evident in the eyes, especially when one shift gears from relaxed to serious. But, at the same time, some of the most dangerous warriors I know are some of the nicest guys I know. They are completely comfortable being themselves, laughing and having fun. Your martial arts skills are not in your expression, but are developed from years of practice and honing the warrior spirit. The difference is that the guys who try to ACT tough are doing so to try to scare off trouble. They are not confident in their abilities, so they put on that mask when in public. The guys who ARE tough, don't care what others think; they are simply ready to handle whatever happens. They know what they can do and actually prefer not to announce it to the whole world. True martial artists know how to handle themselves both socially and in a serious situation. They are nice, courteous and respectful to everyone unless they are given a good reason to shift into the serious mode. They carry themselves with poise, self-confidence, and self-control. It seems that everyone today is looking for a way to be unique in a world where so many people are trying to find themselves. In our current society, if you are nice, courteous, and respectful, you are already setting yourself apart from the herd. Sadly, not that many people live life with those character traits anymore. If you want to stand out, live the life of the warrior. Be nice, respectful and courteous to everyone, until you are forced not to be. Learn how to flip that switch and when it must be turned on. Don't go around scowling and trying to look tough; just make sure you are tough for when you need to be.
