25.01.2022 Those of you who have been in recently may have met our awesome new team member Sarah! Sarah is a bubbly, sensitive, creative, and compassionate person who is absolutely crazy about cats. Sarah’s years of reception experience, plus her background in psychology and education has helped her to be an advocate for helping cat parents to feel cared for, listened to, and empowered. Shortly after moving to Perth, she helped to start a not for profit listening service for people i...n distress. Sarah believes in giving back to the community, and doing kind things to make life a brighter place. She loves engaging in any possible learning experience she can get her hands on when it comes to caring for cats, and is now an AAFP Cat Friendly Advocate. She is a caretaker [pinkies up] of two American-Australian fur children named Elsie and Farber, whom she brought to Australia last year. We are so happy to have Sarah bring her smiles and positivity to our cat living team, make sure you give her a warm welcome next time your in! See more

19.01.2022 One week before Christmas, sweet Priscilla one of our regular golden oldies, fell very unwell. She developed pancreatitis and a liver infection called neutrophilic cholangiohepatitis. This is a condition where bacteria ascends from the small intestine and pancreas into the bile ducts and liver. Together with the team from Perth Vet Emergency, and her dedicated mum, for the past week Priscilla has received round the clock care including intravenous fluid therapy, multiple anti...biotics, pain relief, anti-nausea drugs and liver support. Her illness has temporarily put her off food, so she has also had a feeding tube placed on her neck so we can feed her the nutrition she needs to recover. Throughout her time with us, even though she was feeling sick, she still would give us the most gentlest purrs and loves her shoulder cuddles. We were so happy to finally discharge her home tonight to complete her recovery with her family. See more

14.01.2022 Let’s give a warm welcome to Dr. Renee who joined our team last month! She has had experience working with other animals but ultimately decided her love for cats was too strong. Dr. Renee has two fur babies- Lady (a tabby she adopted while in vet school) and Chi Chi (a beautiful chocolate point Tonkinese). They are mischievous and always getting into trouble but there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for them. Dr. Renee has a strong passion for feline medicine but is particularly interested in feline surgery, behaviour, diagnostic imaging and neurology. She also loves chatting with clients and ensuring they have all the information they need to provide their feline companions with nothing but the best. She is thrilled to be a part of our cat-loving crew and can’t wait to meet all of you!

11.01.2022 Handsome Broc was in today for an ear examination and flush under anaesthetic due to chronic otitis (long term inflammation and infection of the middle ear). A special camera (video otoscope) was guided down the ear to visualise the canal and ear drum and then sterile saline was flushed through to remove dirt, debris and wax. Broc recovered well from his procedure and enjoyed lots of treats and cuddles afterwards!
09.01.2022 Happy Friday people. Here’s the news segment on our special patient Hughie in case you missed it
07.01.2022 How to increase your cat’s water intake By increasing your cat’s water intake this will improve the overall health of your cat. Furthermore, it will also reduce the risk of adverse medical conditions such as chronic kidney disease and urinary tract infections. Whilst we know and understand that changing your cat’s diet from biscuits to wet food will assist in increased levels of hydration we thought we would also provide you with other fun ideas to try around the home. H...ere are some useful ideas to try: Bowls Try using different types of bowls and avoid plastic. Plastic bowls tend to taint the water which can be unappealing to cats to drink from. Ceramic bowls are often the most preferred. Using wide rimmed bowls where cats can avoid their whiskers touching the sides of the bowl. Fill to the brim! Always fill the bowl to the top of the brim so your cat can see the meniscus layer. Daily cleaning. Yes, it is advisable that all bowls are cleaned on a daily basis. The water type Bottled, distilled, tap, running, stale or rain water. Using different types of water throughout the home will give you an idea of the type of water that your cat prefers. Cats with access to the outside may like a bowl that is placed in the garden and catches the rainwater. Many cats love running water so it may be worth investing in a pet fountain or placing a bowl under a dripping tap. Some cats love sinks or bath water so leaving a little in the bottom of the sink/bath may bring your cat to these areas for investigation. Some cats love ice cubes, so it is worth investing by placing a few ice cubes in a bowl. Broths are flavoured water that can also be placed around the home or frozen as ice cubes and placed in the water bowl. Placement of water sources Whilst the bath is fairly fixed in its location, placing bowls in areas of ‘opportunity’ may also help in increasing your cats water intake. These areas include next to their favourite resting place or next to your bed, on a window sill and along hallways where they are likely to take a sip whilst they pass by. Do not place water bowls next to food bowls (if you have a food bowl) and avoid the ‘double bowl’ with food on one side and water on the other. Always ensure your water placements are in a quiet place away from other animals in the home . . . #perthcatvets #perthcathospital #perth #catsofperth #catsofinstagram #instacats #vetlife #catvet #cats #excellent_cats #westleederville #perthpet #isfm
07.01.2022 It is such a beautiful part of our vet career to be able to be part of a kitty’s life from their early beginnings until their senior life. Hughie turned 20 years old this week and he has been a patient of Dr. Martine’s since he was only 2 years old! He was born with a number of disabilities including deafness and a congenital disorder that affects his balance. He can only walk to the left and he is a bit cross eyed. We didn’t expect this special guy to make it past his fir...st five years of life and so you can all imagine our joy when celebrating with his very dedicated mums Janet and Judi for a little party at PCH for his 20th milestone Caring for a geriatric lad of his caliber requires incredible care and love from his family and our team, and we all love this sweet and quirky little kitty. Keep your eyes peeled for this handsome man and a familiar face or two on Channel 7 at 6pm tonight See more
07.01.2022 Panda is a gorgeous, 4yr old Tonkinese who visited us for a persistent cough that progressed into dry wretching and vomiting. During his examination, Panda’s mum mentioned to our team that she had noticed grass in his vomit which raised our suspicions for a possible lodged grass seed causing his problems. Consequently, we recommended to proceed with an endoscopic procedure called rhinoscopy to assess for possible foreign bodies such as grass seeds, evidence of trauma and/or ...infection. Upon examination with our scope under general anaesthetic, the culprit to Panda’s coughing was promptly found! Grass seeds had lodged right up in in his nasopharynx - a hard to reach area where back of the mouth and nose join. With the help of our delicate scope, we removed the seeds and the area was flushed clean. Panda has made a full recovery and has been doing really well at home, on a course of antibiotics to treat the infection the grass seeds had caused. See more

05.01.2022 Tribute to Sassy Last week, we unfortunately lost one of our dearest patients at the age of 3yrs old - far too young for any cat parent to ever have to say goodbye. In her short lived life, she made quite the impact on everyone she met. Most importantly, on her Mum and Dad. Moving from South Africa some years ago, establishing a place that felt like home meant bringing new furry family members into their life - Sassy and her older brother Rowdy. Soon enough, they bec...ame quite the duo and Rowdy took on the role of being the doting older brother to Sassy. First visiting us for a vomiting work up 2 years ago, we learnt that Sassy indeed lived up to her name and we all fell in love with her cheeky personality. She stayed in hospital with us on nearly 40 occasions - which of course was bitter sweet as she was always a joy to have in hospital, but meant she wasn’t feeling well. Sassy’s journey with us started with the diagnosis of pancreatitis, with secondary cholangiohepatitis (inflammation of the liver and biliary system). Managing this was an ongoing role for Sassy’s parents, and their dedication never ceased to amaze us. Living a distance away, they would still make the trip every second Saturday to pick up medications - not to mention the numerous ultrasounds we saw Sassy for. In her last few months, Sassy required intensive palliative care that meant around the clock attention. A team effort consisted of at home care, while Sassy’s parents worked full time to then come home to take the night shift - all to keep her comfortable and as living as close to a normal life as possible. In her final days, Sassy’s quality of life took a turn and her parents made the hard hard but very brave decision to say goodbye. Sassy was a one in a million fur baby, who kept her sassy-tude for us all to enjoy till the end. With a sparkle in her eye, sitting like a proper lady, she gave us all peace of mind knowing that she was ready to cross the rainbow bridge. She will be remembered always. All our love goes out to Hannah, Quinton and Rowdy See more

02.01.2022 Did you know that in order for the vet team to perform a blood transfusion for a sick cat, we must first obtain the unit of blood from an eligible donor under a short general anaesthetic? This is such an amazing gesture of kindness from the owner of the donor cat (and the cat themselves of course!). Dr Martine, Dr Kayleigh and our team of brilliant nurses stayed back late tonight to take a much needed donation to transfuse into one of our cherished, but very unwell, long term patients. Our star donor was Dr Kayleigh’s beautiful kitty Obi-Wan . Join us in saying thank you to this very brave boy.

01.01.2022 Pillar 5: Provide an environment that respects the importance of the cat’s sense of smell Cats use their olfactory and chemical information also known as ‘furr-amones’ to evaluate their surroundings. Ever wonder why your cat is always rubbing their cheek and body against the door frame? This is known as scent marking by both facial and body rubbing within their core territory (living area) in order for them to feel safe and secure. It is important that we do not interfere wit...h these signals and scent profile, for example using harsh or strong cleaners, detergents etc will disrupt their scent profile. Using synthetic pheromones may assist in reducing anxiety speak to either one of our vet nurses or vets when next in about our Feliway products. Provide scratching areas in the home further allows your cat to deposit their scent through the glands in the pads of their feet. Make sure the scratching post is long enough so your cat can do a full body stretch whilst scratching. Place a variety of bedding (pillows and soft blankets) throughout the home and wash them on a rotation (do not wash all items at once) so that other areas throughout the home retain their scent. #perthcatvets #perthcathospital #perth #catsofperth #catsofinstagram #instacats #vetlife #catvet #cats #excellent_cats #westleederville #perthpet #environmentalneeds #felinefriendly
