20.01.2022 How to support the emotional wellbeing of your child during the COVID-19 Pandemic
15.01.2022 Feeling estranged from your own child is painful. Research indicates the most important predictor of a child’s emotional and psychological stability is the clo...seness of the parent/child relationship. If your child is not opening up when they are upset, the relationship may not be as close as it needs to be. There are two habits that parents routinely engage in that shut down communication and drive a child away: negating feelings and mistaking sympathy for empathy. In many cases, honoring your child’s feelings is all they need to feel better. Simply knowing their parent understands allows them to feel secure and forge ahead. Some sympathetic statements, on the other hand, disrupt any chance of emotional attunement, instead of helping them work through their difficult feelings. Dr. Erin Leonard discusses how to be a parent your child wants to confide in on the Gottman Relationship Blog: https://bit.ly/2DHZe8u

10.01.2022 As parents and caregivers, one of our goals should be for our tiny humans to trust us - trust us to keep them safe and trust us to do what we say we’re going to... do. You may think this happens in the big moments - them coming to you with a big secret or confiding in you - but trust is actually built in the smaller moments, like being true to your word. If we do things like sneaking out when we leave or telling them something that isn’t true and then they find out, we’re breaking our trust to them. We do this sometimes because it’s easier to avoid a conflict. For example, maybe they ask for a second cookie, but I don’t want them to have another one, so I tell them they’re all gone when they’re really not. If they look and see that we’re lying, then we’re breaking our trust to them. When we can regulate, so we can hold space for their feelings, we can show up with honesty and integrity and build trust together. Let's build trust and connection with these tiny humans. What's one thing you can today to foster trust with your kiddo?
09.01.2022 All couples will face some form of perpetual conflict. Those recurring issues in your relationship may symbolize a profound difference between you and your part...ner’s personality and lifestyle preferences. But they do not need to become gridlocked. Gridlocked conflict does not simply occur spontaneously. According to John Gottman, there are five phases a conflict generally passes through on the way. What you need to create movement or even a little wiggle room, is the willingness to explore the other person’s side of the conflict and what dreams are beneath their position. So what’s underneath each position in a gridlocked conflict? Is there room for understanding? Room for movement? Read more about overcoming gridlock on the Gottman Relationship Blog: https://bit.ly/2BJWsyH
